I should go through all of our tapes while the VCR still works. I did find one with a few eps of MST3K while looking for home movies.

As far as buying them to find something cool...it's an interesting notion but I couldn't bring myself to do it. BUT if anyone finds a copy of The Phantom Tollbooth, get back to me.

Bumping because I recently got two MST3K episodes taped of off Comedy Central in 1996 on ebay with commercials intact. Pretty great.

I've recently gotten into buying these old blank VHS tapes at thrift stores and sometimes it's a winner, but sometimes it's a loser. Take today for instance. I went to the Salvation Army store and bought three old VHS tapes, which looked to be from the 1980s. Put them in and everything on it was from 2007!

But other times, I have come out pretty well. I once bought an old VHS tape at Value Village for 80 cents and it contained an original broadcast of "The Night Before Christmas" from December 1989, including the original commercials. From the same place, I also bought a VHS tape of "The Magic Schoolbus" from PBS from August 1995. You never know what you may find at these stores.

I love collecting old VHS tapes. My favorite place to buy them is Goodwill. I just recently scored a June 2003 recording of an old marathon of Martin(1993)off of UPN 27 Norfolk.

I got a few nice picks from the flea market this summer. They weren't recorded off TV, but I got an old Star Wars behind the scenes tape narrated by 3PO, the first 2 Patlabor movies and The Land of Faraway.

I am also remembering that i used to have recordings of A Troll In Central Park and Jurassic Park recorded in 1996 from the Oklahoma City area. But I lost them years ago.

I had something like this once:

It was one of my mom's tapes, it had one of Tina Turner's concerts from the 80s (Private Dancer if I'm correct). There were numerous commercials for Zellers, Minute Maid, Remax and others. And in all seriousness, I feel bad now that I taped over it.

It's been quite a while since I've posted on this thread, or even been on Retro Junk, but since my last posts, I've accumulated a lot more VHS finds from flea markets and garage sales. My collection of these purchases ranges in year from 1985 to 2006.

While I haven't contributed much to this thread, there is one on this very topic that I contribute to regularly.

                                    http://boards.radio-info.com/smf/index.php?topic=173167.0

Since I've bought more of these than I can count since my last posts on this RJ thread, I'll just give you the rundown on what I've found from my last two flea market runs.

                                    Flea market #1 (five tapes):
TAPE 1: Last 90 minutes of the 24th Annual Academy of Country Music Awards (taped on 4/10/1989 from WKYC in Cleveland with ads and first few minutes of Channel 3 News at 11:00 with Jill Beach and Tom Sweeney [in for Leon Bibb]), a couple minutes of a breaking news segment from NBC News on Dick Cheney's election to the Bush Administration (taped in March 1989 from WKYC in Cleveland, the opening of a People's Court episode follows), and numerous events from the 1988 Summer Olympics (taped on 9/28/1988 from WKYC in Cleveland with ads throughout)

TAPE 2: 2002 Academy Awards Live from the Red Carpet special (taped on 3/24/2002 from E!, some ad breaks included, others cut out) and most of the Oscars ceremony itself (taped from WEWS in Cleveland with no ads)

TAPE 3: Episode of Beyond Belief: Fact or Fiction? (taped in August 2000 from WJW in Cleveland with ads), approximately 15 minutes of an episode of American Dreams (taped in February 2003 from WNWO in Toledo with some ads), second half of a One Life to Live episode and first half of a General Hospital episode (taped in August 2000 from WEWS in Cleveland with ads), and about 30-45 minutes of Prancer Returns (2001) taped on 11/30/2003 from USA with some ads

TAPE 4: Game 3 of the 1995 World Series (Atlanta Braves at Cleveland Indians) taped on 10/24/1995 from WKYC in Cleveland with ads, also includes last few minutes of Entertainment Tonight prior to the game, Channel 3 News broadcast after the game also with ads (Judd Hambrick, Dawn Stensland, Amy Hasten, and Jim Donovan), and first half of the Tonight Show with Jay Leno with ads

TAPE 5: Part one of Intensity (1997) based on Dean Koontz's novel, taped on 8/5/1997 from WJW in Cleveland with ads also including the first three minutes of Fox 8 News at 10 (Tim Taylor and Wilma Smith)

Flea market #2 (five tapes, most of these weren't nearly as old as the last few):
TAPE 1: 1987 Champion Spark Plug 400, part of the Rancho Murieta Senior Gold Rush, part of the 1987 Canadian Open Final (taped from ESPN on 8/16/1987 with ads); last few laps of the 1987 San Marino Grand Prix (taped from ESPN on 5/3/1987 with ads)

TAPE 2: Four episodes of All in the Family (taped from TV Land's All in the Family 35th Anniversary Marathon on 1/15/2006 with ads)

TAPE 3: Intro and small part of "Fatal Deception: Mrs. Lee Harvey Oswald" (taped from NBC [presumably WKYC in Cleveland] on 11/15/1993); most of "A Family of Strangers" (taped from WJW in Cleveland on 2/21/1993 with ads, including the first few minutes of Newscenter 8 at 11:00 with Dave Buckel and Kelly O'Donnell)

TAPE 4: Three episodes of NYPD Blue (two without ads, one with ads and the start of a Forensic Files episode, taped from Court TV in March 2006); last few minutes of "The Jerk" (1979) taped from AMC sometime in 2006 with no ads; last few minutes of "Wall Street" (1987) taped from Bravo sometime in 2006 with no ads

                                    TAPE 5: Taken parts 7, 8 and 9 (Sci-Fi Channel miniseries taped on December 10, 11, 12, 2002 with ads)

I found six more tapes at one of our local flea markets a couple of weekends ago. Here's the rundown of what I found:

TAPE 1: 2/11/2002 WEWS News Channel 5 at Noon newscast (Brad Harvey, Danita Harris, and Mark Johnson), episodes of Port Charles, All My Children, One Life to Live, General Hospital, and part of Oprah from that afternoon, all w/c; last 30 minutes of another GH episode from another day in February 2002 on WEWS with ads; last 45 minutes of a broadcast of Mother Angelica Live on EWTN sometime in 2000, some promos followed

TAPE 2: Small part of "The Nutty Professor" (1996) taped from WJW in Cleveland in March 1999 with some ads; "Mr. Roberts" (1955) taped from AMC in March 1999, no promos or bumpers; part of "The 'Burbs" (1989) taped from WUAB in Cleveland in March 1999 with ads; most of "Visit to a Small Planet" (1960), followed by the first 15 minutes of an episode of Wild Things taped from WBNX in Akron in March 1999 with ads; first 20 minutes of an episode of General Hospital taped from WEWS in December 1997 with ads

TAPE 3: Full episode of One Life to Live and partial episode of General Hospital taped in August 2002 (strange recording because whoever taped this switched back and forth from WEWS in Cleveland to WTVG in Toledo from segment to segment, few ads were included); last 15 minutes of another GH episode and first 10 minutes of an episode of the Rosie O'Donnell Show taped from WTVG in July 2002 with ads; last 10 minutes or so of a History Channel documentary called Founding Fathers taped sometime in summer 2001 with some ads; first 10 minutes or so of an episode of American Eats: History on a Bun taped from the History Channel sometime in summer 2001 with some ads

TAPE 4: Reruns of M*A*S*H, NewsRadio, and The Nanny taped from WJW in November 1999 with ads; most of "Home Alone 2: Lost in New York" (1992) taped from WJW on 11/25/1997 with ads and first five minutes of Fox 8 News at Ten (Tim Taylor and Wilma Smith)

TAPE 5: "Fire Down Below" (1997), this one looks like it was copied from a rental VHS, as the opening previews are included, but at the end of the tape is most of an episode of the Adventures of Superman and most of an episode of The New Monkees, both taped from WOIO in Cleveland sometime in November 1987 with ads

TAPE 6: All four parts of the Stephen King miniseries "The Stand" taped from WEWS on May 8, 9, 11 and 12, 1994 with ads and News Channel 5 at 11:00 openings from all but one evening

Never found any there but my sister found a box of some in an alley where she used to live and she found The X-Files, The Muppet Show, and some old Christmas movies on the tapes. It was really neat to watch the Christmas movies and The Muppet Show but I didn't watch The X-Files I didn't like the show. I remember finding an old tape here at home and finding a bunch of stuff on it after Pete's Dragon and The Brave Little Toaster were over. I recognized the end of Return to Oz but I didn't recognize the stuff that came on after it and before the very end of the tape there was a scene from an old show that my sisters and I used to watch called The Magic Ring.
