I just rediscovered this movie and I must say it's one of the greatest animated features ever. Anyone agree?

Not one of the greatest, but a very good one. The animation is top notch and the soundtrack is awesom. It has a very good flowing story, I do not understand why it bombed at the box office.

I saw this in the theaters and I liked it alot. But it seems half the people I know don't like it.

I didn't like it mainly because of the unemotional dialog (a running problem in films by Don Bluth) and the soundtrack (I really doubt people a thousand years in the future are going to be rocking out to Lit!)

What people do you know now that are rocking out to what the Romans did a 1,000 or more years ago. Trust me, if you heard it you would think it was so lame. Most were simple melodies played by lyre or compositions played by flute girls ( who in ancient Greece were prostitutes). Granted, there were probably great compositions, but can you name one?

i am very interested in what parts of our culture will survive to be learned by future generations and what aspects of our culture will be appreciated by them.
Also, I was not thinking of Lit when I said the soundtrack was awesome.

Well, all of the epic poems such as the Oedesy and the Illiad were sang by traveling minstrels like Homer, but I don't know what tune they carried. They were good stories though, so I guess it didn't matter.

Yeah, I enjoyed the movie. Some nice eye candy... solid American animation... cheesy, yet funny dialogue. Good to know I'm not the only one with bad taste. J/K

And I'm proud to say I own the soundrack. The Lit song is pretty good...

Matt, first of all most modern scholars doubt that Homer existed, he was a blind poet trained in the oral tradition, he was the first to write it down(according to legand). Anead was written by Virgil to appease Augustus to show a connection to Aneas, the ancestor of Romulus and Remus, the legandary founders of Rome. the connection to Aneas is through a woman named Maria Silva who mated with Mars the god of war, through this union she gave birth to Romulus an Remes, who were abonded on raft on a river by there uncle and later suckeled by a she wolf. The legand has it that Romulus and Remus were building a wall, they got into a fight and Romulus killed Remus, hence the name Rome. Apparently this happened in 753 B.C. , because this is the time that Roman history says the city of Rome was founded. The Illiad conferms the legand that Rome was founded by a prince of Troy, Aneas,by his decendants Romulu and Remus.
Virgil wrote this poem in the time of Augustus. If you look at the Prima Porta statue of Augustus it shows a chuerb riding a dolphin, which is a connection to Venus, the goddess of love, who accordding to legand is the mother of Aneas. I have also e-mailed one of my profeesor who is an expert in Roman and Greek lore, poetry, and development of the Roman empire.

We're getting off topic and I stand by my dis.(no hard feelings) :)

(P.S) You're getting the Illiad confused with Aenid, which was supposedly written by Virgil. The Illliad (of which the movie Troy is based) and its sequel the Odysey were written in ancient greek by one or more mysterious poets; maybe Homer, maybe not. (once again, no hard feelings) :)

Srry by the time I wrote this post I had 10 beers and two high gravity malts in me, I am supprised I could coherently write anything. Also, I went off on the Aneid because I had just written a paper on it, so basically I went on about nothing relevant to the disscussion. Oh, well alcohol abuse is bad.

That movie was totally gay. I mean, the evil alien wankers had to be made of energy so that there'd be no blood if they died.

I liked this movie. I like a lot of Don Bluths movies.

Although the voices do seem to mismatch the mouths of the characters sometimes. And the whole sense of the characters emotions wasn't really felt, like the whole Cael and Akima falling in love seemed kinda background information and not very significant. Also the anatomy in a lot of the drastic action scenes was fairly realistic, but wasn't very gripping or cool. What happened was cool but it just didn't look as snappy as it could've been. Perhaps it just wasn't what we expected from an animated movie. I did lik the music though.

And not to dis Robert, but I disagree. There's plenty of violence, Cael getting shot twice showed plenty of realism and blood. And things like many of the Gau getting blown out of the sky (killed) trying to fight the Dredge. There wasn't a crap load of it, but there was plenty, and that's very realistic actually.

But the whole "after earth" concept was pretty cool, and the graphics were very amazing over all. The story and the characters are what I dig the most about this movie, it's just a very interesting speculation about what would happen if the earth was destroyed and shows us what we take for granted.

Bottom line, Great story and very fun characters. But Don Bluth probably shouldn't make too many more action movies.

I agree w/ you, "kray". this was a good movie, and there was a good amount of violence. and yeah, the whole destruction of earth plot was very well done as well. i like the sarcasm as well; that's one of the things i look for in movies: good sarcasm!
