Probably one of the greatest Bass players of all time, Cliff Burton! Made his successes on joining Metallica in the early 80s and writing most of Metallica's songs in their 3 albums they had together. Kill 'Em All, Ride The Lightning, and Master Of Puppets. Most of those songs would be (Anesthesia) Pulling Teeth, Fight Fire With Fire, Ride The Lightning, For Whom The Bell Tolls, Fade To Black, Creeping Death, Call of Ktulu, Master Of Puppets, Orion, and Damage, Inc.

On September 27, 1986, Metallica was on a Damage, Inc Tour and the Tour Bus slipped on black ice and the bus crashed on landed on it's side. While this was happening Burton was thrown through the window of the bus, which fell on top of him and killed him. A winch that was lifting the bus off him snapped, causing the bus to crush him a second time. After Cliff's Death, Metallica's bass replacement was Jason Newsted. Then Metallica went on to dedicate Cliff Burton with their 4th studio album "...And Justice For All". One of their songs on And Justice For All was "To Live Is To Die". Which was suppose to be a tribute song to Cliff. Also in the year of 1987, Metallica released the tribute documentary Cliff 'em All, a video retrospective of Burton's time in the band. It is a collection of live performance footage shot by fans.

Cliff rocked so hard. He's definately my favorite bass player and without him Metallica wouldn't be Metallica.

                Uh...

If anyone screwed Metallica, it was Lars. Oddly enough, thanks to Lars, the band got the boost that made them famous in the first place, but also because of his encounter with Napster, the band lost credibility. Then there was James' drinking and Newsted leaving to pursue another project.

Lars shut himself up, James cleaned up, Kirk forgave, and a new bassist was chosen. They go back to business and the "in" thing now is to bash the band.

Anyway, regarding Cliff, he was a great bassist and from video clips I've seen with him and the band, a great guy. His death was one of the most tragic in music history and if his spirit is still with us, I'm sure he's proud of his friends for accomplishing what they set out to do in 1982 -- rule the world. What came after? That's just unfortunate circumstance.

Cliff's death marked a distinct change in Metallica's sound, and it wasn't for the better. Master Of Puppets is still one of the greatest albums of all time.

It wasn't Jason the one who screwed Metallica. (...And Justice for All is a great album) so I consider Bob Rock to be the one who ruined them.

The producer responsible for the band's best-selling album to date?

Of course. Everyone know that if you sell a lot of albums you suck.
I don't want to sell anything, buy anything, or process anything as a career. I don't want to sell anything bought or processed, or buy anything sold or processed, or process anything sold, bought, or processed, or repair anything sold, bought, or process

Just because you sell a lot of albums doesn't mean its good. It means you found a way to appease the mainstream. Bob Rock DID screw Metallica. ...And Justice For All isn't all that bad. Its a decent album for what it is. Even if the bass lines are washed out a bit. But the self-title album hasn't held up as well as it should have. The band went from thrash metal to hard rock. The transition wasn't a good one.

It was like after Burton died, so did the drive of the band.
