The Japanese influence in America is getting stronger and stronger, with all these anime rip off cartoons out there now. It was about time this manga stuff goes mainstream. From newspapers I see, although I dont read them much, all the good comics are gone anyway like Calvin and Hobbes, Garfield, and Peanuts. Honestly, I cant stand this stuff anymore. America has lost it's originality. Everybody should be forced to watch the Chinpokomon South Park episode .

SSJ Jup81 9 years 28 days ago Posts: 4806	Meh, I don't think this is a good idea, and I actually do enjoy reading manga. I do prefer our classic strips, like Foxtrot, For Better For Worse, Peanuts, Dennis the Menace to read in the paper. Manga, to me, is good as being graphic novels. Then again, something I wouldn't mind reading in the newspaper in "strip" format would be Meitantei Conan aka Detective Conan because of the genre being mystery. It'd be cool, reading the strip, pondering how the murder was committed, who committed it, and then anxiously reading the next week's installment to see if you were right, close, completely off, etc. That aside, I don't know why so many people are complaining about the influence Japan is having on America. What about the British Invasion in the 60s? I don't see too many people complaining about that who lived through it nor do I see anyone here complaining about it. Oh, and if anything, we've had more of an influence on Japan as opposed to their having an influence on us. Check out all of the random English they use over there, the art (influenced by Disney), and the music (R&B/Hip-Hop is actually becoming very popular over there). Don't get me wrong, I'm all for replacing Peanuts, Garfield, For Better or For Worse, heck....almost ALL of the current comics with something funnier, but manga isn't going to do it. It's going to end up like the stupid Spiderman or Mary Worth comics where you have to read the damn thing every week or you won't know what the hell is going on. Another thing that will suck is that US standards will be applied to it, so you're not going to have the 'objectionable' material you can find in most manga. I LIKE THE OBJECTIONABLE MATERIAL!!!!!!!!!!

How there is now a McDonalds in every country on the face of the Earth? Or how you can buy Hollywood movies in the bazaars of India just as easily as you can in California? Before the Japanese influence started in the 70's and 80's, cartoons were purely the domain of kids. And while that stigma is still around, it means anything animated in the US is getting aimed at little kids. Anime and Manga can an do target older audiences. And, since you're on this sight, I bet you watched a lot of anime as a kid and don't even realize. Speed Racer, Voltron, Battle for the Planets/G-Force, Starblazers, Robotech, Mysterious Cities of Gold, they were all japanese anime that got brought over here. Transformers, Thundercats, M.A.S.K., even when the shows were american made they had definate anime trends in them. The entire reason manga and anime is so popular is because that it is GOOD. It deals with topics that American cartoons and comic books don't deal with. It aims at us older viewers/readers, and isn't afraid to use the mediums for all they're worth. I mean, its rather hypocritical to say you're worried about manga getting into the papers in America as being some insidious ploy, and then turning around and turning a blind eye to McDonald's and Wal-Mart spreading across the world. It goes both ways. If its bad for Japanese culture to influence America, then it MUST also be bad for American culture to influence the rest of the world.

Badkitty 9 years 27 days ago Posts: 922	I can't believe that so many people are up in arms over this. The manga's are not taking over the entire comics section. Anyway it looks like they are only adding two manga's to the comics that are already there. Adding a couple Japenese mangas is NOT going to turn America into Japan Jr. Besides if you want to get technical about it, the style of drawing used in anime and manga was some what influenced by American cartoons, ex Mickey Mouse. I wouldn't worry to much about turning America into Japan. America is already such a huge melting pot that has so many different cultural influences that a couple mangas in the Sunday paper isn't going to matter. I like the idea because I personally do not care for the comics that are run currently and enjoy reading manga. I also think it is a good idea becuase I do believe that it will help getting children and teens to read, something that has been on the decline since the invention of tv. Let me tell you having a brother that is 15 and basically illiterate, anything that gets kids to read is good in my book.

Getting right down to it, some series started in "papers" and magazines or ran in them. Sailor V, Sailor Moon, and Digimon: V-Tamer comes to mind.

I used to years ago, but grew bored of it. ^^ Like I said, some people just like series with a story behind them, and stuff like Mary Worth and For Better For Worse and Prince Valiant come to mind. I think that it should be fair for people who prefer one over the other. I, personally, prefer the comedic ones, but, I also like a sense of realism. I guess Baby Blues and Jump Start count in this regard, as the characters age, but, it's also meant to be amusing.

Edymnion 9 years 27 days ago Posts: 2523	Yes, its generally considered poor form to try and force your opinion on others. Just because you don't like Mary Worth doesn't mean others don't like it. In fact, there must be a great many people that like reading Mary Worth and Prince Valiant, because they have been in the comics section for MANY, MANY years now. If they weren't popular, they would have been removed long ago. I personally like the idea of manga in the papers. An ongoing story that isn't a soap opera wanna-be. Heck, I used to read the Spiderman strip all the time before it got taken out, and it had story arcs that would span a year or more, easy. Anybody remember when the strip in the papers needed Parker to get a new job for a while, and they had a write in campaign to see what it would be? He ended up being a tightrope walker in the circus, using his wallcrawling to stick to the rope so he could do all sorts of crazy stunts. I miss that strip. Here's hoping the manga strips are that good!

The one manga I saw Azumanga Daioh , the way they set up the scenes allmost look like somthing from a Newspaper comic strip. That'll be a nice addition to the mix. and yes I'm getting tyred with some of the unfunny new ones that have no point. Ie Frank and ernest/Dillbert

SSJ Jup81 9 years 26 days ago Posts: 4806	I've read Azumanga Daioh and seen the show (not all of it). It's quite funny. The characters are truly amusing, especially Osaka and her random sayings. If they did run it in an American paper, though, I bet most anything they'll somehow edit out the whole Kaorin > Sakaki stuff.
