As you all may know, the balance of their 1981 album Tattoo You, which had topped the U.S. Billboard 200 Album charts between September and November of that year, was (mostly) a mishmash of unreleased songs taken from recording sessions commenced between 1972 and 1979.
The opening track and lead-off single, "Start Me Up," was originally conceived as an upbeat reggae number tentatively titled "Never Stop" when initially recorded in Munich during the Black and Blue sessions in 1975. They returned to recording this in Paris in 1977 during the Some Girls sessions which spawned their last U.S. #1 single "Miss You" released in 1978. "Hang Fire," which follows "Start Me Up" on the LP and was the 3rd single extracted from it, was recorded in 1977 as well.
"Waiting on a Friend" (which features a Sonny Rollins saxophone solo) was among the oldest recorded songs on this album, having originally been recorded in late 1972 in Jamaica during the Goat's Head Soup sessions. As a result, Mick Taylor (a Stones guitarist from 1969-74) played guitar on this song, not Ronnie Wood. (Taylor later demanded and received a share of the album's royalties following its release.)
