The movie was a horror movie. It was aimed at adults. Hence, the characters were older so that they would be more identifiable with the target audience. The 18 and older crowd.
The cartoon was funny, and was aimed at children. Hence, the characters were younger, so the kids watching could relate.
Its quite common to change the age of characters so they are more relatable to the viewing audience. I mean, lets use an anime example. In the US, Sailor Moon was a highschool student. In Japan she was middle school.
Anime girls almost always get aged up so that they appear more acceptable to US audiences.
