Anyone seen this movie yet? It's the real life story of a kid who gave up everything to just be free and live in the mountains. I thought it was a pretty great movie.

While I didn't agree with the guy's reasoning for doing it, there were times when I was younger that I contimplated doing something similar - destroying all my i.d., giving away all my money (not that I had any), and just going out into the bush and living off the land.

So many of the stresses of everyday life are just caused by bullshit bureaucracy but it really isn't that hard to get away from it if you truly want to. That's why I thought the movie was interesting.

I loved this movie and it's a shame that it didn't get more attention.

I have yet to see it. I heard that this movie has been in the making for quite some time and finally they were able to get the go ahead from his family to do it.

The book made me hate Chris more than the movie did, but both were great.

I know what you mean, what Chris did was pretty selfish and his reasons for doing it were pretty soft. But I think the movie at least showed that because virtually everyone he was meeting was questioning what he was doing and telling him to go back home.

I didn't like his sister's narration over the top of scenes though. It was just pretentious.

I haven't seen it yet, though I have seen some of Eddie Vedder's music videos for the soundtrack.

I haven't seen it, but I have the soundtrack. While some people consider him an inspiration, a lot of people consider him an idiot. I read some interview with a park ranger or something like that who railed on what this kid did, and criticised the kids cockiness for thinking he was smart enough to survive in such an environment just by using a few books and not carrying any maps with him. The guy said that had the kid just gotten a map he would have seen that he was something like a days walk away from help, but since he didn't he had no clue.

As for him giving away all of his money, wasn't it his parents money they had put in a fund for him?

I don't know all of the facts for sure so don't get mad if I got something completely wrong.

Well he cut up his credit cards, but yeah he was a rich kid. His parents were millionaires or something. I think it would be a lot easier to give up everything if you knew mummy and daddy were always gonna be there to fix things for you later...Going "into the wild" is definitely a luxury of the rich.

I thought it was more interesting that Sean Penn directed, co-produced and co-written the screenplay.

I like alot of Sean Penns movies where's he's acted in, but has anyone seen the movies he's created himself?

I've seen a couple of his movies and he's definately an actors director and writter.

The movie was decent but the book was much better. The whole scenario with the sexually frustrated hippy couple in the movie was weird. I totally missed that part in the book.
