The most hilarious thing about all this whining is that it's not a new argument. I used to hear it all the time...about how much TV sucks now, and cartoons are horrible, and shows aren't good anymore. And I used to hear it in the 80s, from people who waxed nostalgic about the 60s and the 70s.
Here's the reality: Your fond memories of an era does not mean that the era in question was golden. It is only your opinion.
Personally, most of the Nickelodeon shows folks on this site think are "golden" is crap I thought was pretty terrible, having been a child of the 80s. About the only cartoon I liked in the 90s was Tiny Toon Adventures, and that wasn't on Nick. Couldn't stand things like "Rugrats" at all. But, oddly enough, I really love the newer stuff like "Spongebob Squarepants," which so many people on this site think is horrible (can't figure out why...the show is pretty cleverly written and hilarious most of the time).
There is nothing wrong with TV today. Get over it.
I love that we have a ton of Science Fiction and Fantasy on TV today. And a lot of it is good.
If you lived in the early 80s, your sci-fi choices were mostly reruns of Star Trek, Space: 1999 and Battlestar Galactica. Occasionally, you'd get something new, like "V," and it would be great for a while. But, overall, there wasn't a lot to choose from.
And in regard to reality shows, here's why they do so well: People watch them. Just because you hate them does not mean other people do.
In general people got really tired of formulaic episode of the week television. TV has evolved somewhat over the last decade. We see story arcs that run whole seasons and continuity from episode to episode, where the things that happen one week affect what happens in later weeks. In the olden days, a character could be shot in one episode, and then be fine the next, and they'd never mention it again EVER.
Sure, there were some great shows back then. But, there are some great shows now. You just won't see them until you take off your blinders.
BTW, if anyone is reading this in the year 2030, I hope to apologize to you all. These old-time farts are hating on your favorite shows as a kid. These reality shows and "Spongebobs" that you will grow up waxing nostalgic about and claiming that programming in 2030 isn't anything like it was in 2009.
