Basically, it's the severity of the condition. For example, people with Aspergers' can be communicative and function as normally as people without the condition, but they aren't necessarily communicative enough to form relationships of any sort (be they friend or lover). As another example, there can be an intense concentration on certain subjects to the point where everyday habits can be forgotten. There are Aspies with extensive knowledge of movies of the French New Wave or various types of tigers who tend to be lacking in grooming skills and sanitary behaviors that come naturally to those who don't have the condition.
Severe autism means basically being shut off from the outside world by matter of neurology. Nil communication and behavior issues unbecoming that of an adult are examples of what can be found in the autistic community. Aspies have those issues as well, but not as severe.
I hope I was able to explain the difference clearly enough, but if not, I can point you in the direction of resources on the matter.
