I look forward to the article. As someone with autism myself, I'm always interested in hearing other people's experiences with various forms of the problem.

FWIW, I get along better on this board than I did on the Wrong Planet forums. I just didn't fit in with them...I fit in fine here, though.

I was for a time, but then I bailed. No offense, roy, but that website just wasn't a good fit with me. My autism was the only thing I could relate to with those people. Other than that, well, I can't really say anything without creating drama or sounding insulting, so I'll just say the site wasn't for me and leave it at that.

Well, i dont have autism but i think its a great idea to write an article about it. Afterall i think sometimes people forget that just because you have something like autism it does not mean that all hope is lost, furthermore there are waaaaaaay to many labels in this current society. I admire you Benjanime and others with autism for sticking with your perserverence in life and not letting anyone say otherwise. Good luck on your article :)

                I have autism too.

And what sucks about it is that I'm too normal for the Disabled World, but I'm too disabled for the Normal World.

And having autism made me get behind many things such as school, getting a job, and getting my Drivers License which I still don't have.

How the hell did that crap become so common all of a sudden....it wasn't a problem back when I was in school.

They're doing research into that. I read about a study that said that lack of physical exercsion and lots of video games brings these things out in people where they would have otherwise laid dormant.

Its like, there's always been a certain amount of the population that is susceptable to autism/assburgers, but since no one bothers to move away from the tv or computer screen, it comes out.

Pardon me, but what exactly is Autism? I mean, it's a condition I've heard of/known of my entire life, but I've never really had it clearly defined.

I think its kinda like a group of conditions. The largest common denominator I know is that they all suffer from low "emotional intellegence", meaning that they can't follow social norms and customs.

I have a nephew that has assburgers. He doesn't understand relationships like "friend", "boy/girlfriend", "wife/husband". He doesn't understand why jokes are funny. He doesn't understand why one person should have affection for another person.

Its quite scary, if you think about it.

Count me in as one of those who was diagnosed with autism (it was at the age of 3 for me). I'm lucky to still be alive after what I've gone through with it.

To be technical, I have Aspergers' Syndrome. It's an autism spectrum disorder and, while not as severe as some forms of autism, it still carries its' own sets of issues and problems. It's difficult to put into words what kind of problems I have, but my life has always been rough, and I often feel that if I didn't have Aspergers', then my life would be a whole lot easier.

Actually, to tell the truth, autism is as common today as it was back then. Changes in diagnostic practices have attributed to the higher numbers.

BTW, as an autistic person myself (I have Asperger's, which is a milder form of autism), I'm interested in reading the article as soon as it comes out.

I also have poor memory and mediocre math-abilities myself, as a byproduct of my autism. However, I do also have the goal of proving that anyone, regardless of impediment, can become a major leader of the economic, political and academic world :) . If that's alright with you, perhaps you could include mention of my goal in your article.
