The thing about CGI...is now you always know the answer to the question - "How did they do that?" I remember when I never used to know how they pulled something off in a movie...and there are still older pre-CGI movies that leave me scratching my head over how they did some of the effects. Today though, you always know everything is done on a computer.

I know; the last time I had that kind of reaction was when I saw "The Matrix"

And one thing I've noticed is that visual effects have lost some of the sense of artistry and imagination they used to have. Looking "realistic" shouldn't be enough for visual effects; it has to be used by someone with great imagination.

I have mixed feelings about CGI. When you see something like Lord of the Rings or Pirates of the Caribbean and then compare them to similar sorts of fantasy movies like Ladyhawk or Willow or some other thing you can really appreciate the scale of the worlds they are able to create with CGI - The size of the landscapes and the numbers of figures of screen etc.

However, then you get a movie like Transformers where everyone went on about the amazing SFX. Honestly, I expect that level now so there was nothing great about them for me. If Transformers had anything less than the standard they used in that film then it would have been an absolute joke. That's why that movie sucked for me - A shitty story with lame characters and the only supposedly saving grace where the "dazzling special effects" that I've come to expect from a Hollywood blockbuster anyway.

I think CGI for backgrounds like panoramic shots with large scale wars and inanimate objects are cool but should be used sparingly. CGI for anything alive or animate just comes off as fake, like you can reach out and try to touch it and it would be an illusion or hologram which is why CGI comes of nice for ghosts.

I like the story for the Star Wars prequels, I'm still entertained by them and feel they fit the story arc too but it's not as entertaining as the originals because it doesn't seem as real or tangent. They remind me of a CGI Cool World or Roger Rabbit with live actors, almost everything except the actors is fake because everything except the actors are CG. With movies like the Lord of the Rings it's used when ever necessary and in a way that is believable.

I agree. Lord of the Rings and Pirates of the Carribean both used CGI well. I didn't even realize that Davey Jones was almost entirely CGI! I thought they just added a few animated tentacles!

I only saw the first Pirates movie, but I agree about Lord Of The Rings, and they used it so well that half the time you couldn't tell what was CGI, with some obvious exceptions like Gollum and so forth, but they still looked good.
