    		 Are horror films still scary?

    I haven't made my mind up, really.

    You can see what they are trying to do with the whole psychological thing, but, is it scary?

      		 Not really. I just don't care about that characters enough to be scared for them.

      To me, I was actually really freaked out the first time I watched "Rosemary's Baby". Something about it just made me very scared at the time.

        		 I haven't seen anything remotely scary since The Shining. The Kubrick one, not the sucky TV version. Everything they try to pass off as horror now days is just gore & shock value shit. Nothing about it stays with you. None of it keeps you up at night. Crap like Hostel, the new Texas Chainsaw Massacres, Saw 3 & 4, it's just sickening, gross-out tactics. Horror doesn't have to be gory to be good. I'm not apposed to gore, but you need more than that to make an awesome horror movie.

          		 Horror films don't really try to scare anymore as much as they try to gross the viewer out. That and alot of violent camera edits.

              The second one however, sucked shit.

                  		 Modern horror more directly reflects the cruelty of mankind as the moster and less of the supernatural. The idea of being brutally tortured doesn't really give me warm fuzzies.
                  There's a legend out there....of a killer buried but not dead...

                      		 Psychological horror is the best. Horror where the violence is implied, yet still heard is what gives me the chills. It lets the imagination run wild of what it could be. Horror should always be atmospheric. There needs to be feeling of something is there, just out of reach.

                        		 what about those ones where its like super into the torture aspect? Wasn't that movie "Hostel" all about some guy getting tourtured? I never watched it, just because it would be too painful to sit through.

                        I think he gets his achillies tendons slit. That's fucking disgusting.

                            Hostel really wasn't that gruesome. I sat through it and ate dinner while watching. Now check out the Japanese movie Audition.

                                  I haven't seen Audition yet. But its by Takashi Miike. The guy responsible for the original One Missed Call (which was a good thriller in itself) and Ichi the Killer. He also did the 'banned' episode of Masters of Horror episode Imprint. It was banned for the violence and graphic images. Like abortions being tossed out of a brothel window.

                                    That's just a good time, where I'm from. It seems like a lot of Japanese horror movies are remade over here. The Ring... that one with Sarah Michelle Gellar... forget the name of it... that cell phone movie. I'm sure there's others.

                                      I've seen Audition. There isn't any gore at all until roughly the last thirty minutes of the film, but the parts that are gory definitely deliver. One scene in particular actually made me gag, although you'd have to see the film to know which one.

                                      My one complaint about the film has nothing to do with the horror or gore factor, but a certain element of the plot that I just didn't buy. Of course, you could argue that, if I wanted plot, I wouldn't be watching a horror film. Shit, maybe THAT'S the problem with horror movies these days.
