Search google for "beginner HTML tutorials" and once you have that down search for "beginner PHP tutotrials".

Then on the design side just think of about 6 nice colors that go well together and try to never use anything but those colors to avoid over saturation. Then sit down with a pencil and paper to sketch out what you want your site to look like. Then crack open Photoshop and start drawing up all of the elements you need to translate it over to HTML.

It takes lots of practice and experiance but with each site you build you will get better and better.

Vertex has obviously taken some legit courses on webdesign...that's some good advice. Another way to get experience is to go to webpages and see how they were constructed by viewing the source code. If you click 'view' in Internet Explorer and select 'source', it'll open a window with the html source code. You can refer to it to see how each bit of the page was written. If you've had no coding experience it's pointless, but definitely helps give you ideas if you've had prior experience.

I dunno if this will help or not, but my one web design teacher has all kinds of notes and stuff on his web site. Here's the ones from when I had Web Layout & Design if you're interested.....

Thanks for all the help. But, could you tell me a bit more about templates? Like, how do you make them. A good example is this site.
