I'm not the smartest guy in the whole world and need to know the basics of copyrighting works. Some of my friends say you don't have to have a record with a copyright office and that as soon as the work is made(such as a movie) that its automatically copyrighted, and the information i've been getting just keeps going back and forth between "You don't have to file with a copyright office." and "You do (or at least its a good idea to) file work with a copyright office. I've searched online and its just made me more confused, once again i'm not that smart.
Does anyone have any clue or can at least give me correct information?
One friend told me you only need to worry about copyrighting your work only when it comes to written out and original thoughts, and that artwork, like on a canvas (a painting or drawing) is automatically copyrighted once you sign your name, and that the same goes for short films, or any type of film with credits.
Can anyone confirm that her information is correct?
