As asked by some of the people who commented on my article about writing articles for Retrojunk, I am posting a link to the advice here so that anyone in the forums may access it. As with all advice on writing, take it or leave it. However, if you do find it useful, well, you're welcome and I'm glad I could help you out. :-)

An additional note. Lately there seems to be a lack of interest in "top 10" etc. articles. A smarter idea might be to do an exclusive article on your #1 choice in your list.

As always, just food for thought. You don't have to eat it if you don't want.

Actaully, interest is NOT enough. People are clearly interested in the topics they choose when they write for this site, and yet many still end up on the back pages. Writers need to make sure they hit all the points in the article to which the top entry of this thread is linked in order to increase their odds for article success.

Top ten (or whatever number you prefer) articles always seem to cause conflict. As fun as that is, It would also be nice to see more articles focusing on a single topic with mind-tickling information and trivia.

Yeah...if you look through the articles, you will find no shortage of Top 10 lists. I always assume when someone takes the Top 10 route that they are being lazy.

I read your full house article velcrohead it was good. More articles should be based like it.

My advice is not to write another cliched "TV Sucks Now" article. I had read enough of those articles and they are all poorly written and just simply bashes shows without explaining why they suck.

This may be straying from the topic, but I am noticing that a lot of people seem to be writing topics about NES or video games in general here lately...and it sort of seems to pander to a group who would give it a thumbs up simply because they like the games mentioned, no matter whether the article was informative, well-worded or even halfway spelled right.

I've noticed certain writers tend to follow trends that will assure them high ratings (not mentioning who, but a cross-eyed spotted dog avatar comes to mind) and I'm not convinced they're not just slapping something together that will just appeal to the masses, rather than being researched or well-constructed.

Posted this in another thread, but it belongs here too:

My best advice for those of you who are starting out writing articles is to write a few practice ones to start (but DON'T submit them.) You can keep them saved, preview them to see how they look, and then keep on going back and re-working them. Then pick the one you like best and submit it.

Also, don't just write an article for writing's sake. Wait till you have the perfect inspiration. My last article on Full House was conceived while I was in the shower. For whatever reason, I was thinking about a message I had gotten from Candace a little while back, and then that reminded me of how I had just seen Jodie a few nights earlier on Pants Off Dance Off, and from there I got the idea to use what knowledge I'd already gained and do further research, and what developed was a fairly decent article, if I do say so myself.

And like Knites has offered, I'm glad to volunteer my services as a proofreader/editor. Don't be scared. I won't be rough on you. I am very hard on people who DO submit articles that are trash, because they have all had the opportunity to use things like proofreaders, beta readers, or even something as simple as spell check, and they choose not to. That's why I really rake them over the coals. (Trust me, my bosses would and have done the same to me from time to time.) But those of you who would like the help and would like to get better at writing, I promise I'd be willing to work with you.

It never hurts to have a second or third pair of eyes look over your work.

One thing I have started to do is type my text in a WORD processor first, so I can use the spelling and grammar checkers. These tools are far from perfect, but they do weed out alot of clumsy errors a writer may make.

Also, it is a good idea to write your piece, walk away from it for a couple of days, and then come back and reread it. You would be surprised how effective this approach to proof reading is.

And, Nlogan. If you're looking for that second pair of eyes, just send me a PM.

Knites, Velcrohead, how would I go about sending an article for proofreading? Can I just copy everything from the article and put it in a PM?

copying to word will help u with spelling and grammar, but after u paste it back here you better preview it so your commas or apostrophes dont get replaced by someothing else.

and i noticed using firefox helps check for spelling errors by putting a dotted line under the mispelled.

And "This Sucks" articles seem to be on their way out as well.
