Going early is always the best bet, to get first pick at everything. Going near the end can actually also be a not bad idea cause things are probably marked down at that point.

I'm not as big on yard sales as I used to be. I used to raid them for used records but e-bay kind of ruined that. Now instead of people selling vinyl for next to nothing, they put it up there and wait for the highest bidder. I can remember the old days though when I used to be able to get some absolute classics in fine condition for a dollar or under.

The odd time I still see cool stuff. At a yard sale in 2004 I got a Ventures album and Bob Dylan's Greatest Hits Volume 2 double album for two dollars. I also had a really nice chat with the guy who sold the albums to me. Nowadays I see more cds and tapes at yard sales than vinyl.

I also look for old books, movies and retro stuff when I go to yard sales.

Always go for the best stuff, like old records, retro clothing, casettes and maybe recorded cartoons, such as Fat Albert and the oldest Charlie Brown episodes. Those are always a hit!

One thing to remember is to stay clear of newer development areas that have yearly block sales. You will quickly find they are a waste of time if you are looking for cool old stuff. Sometimes newer developments can have good stuff like furniture and houshold stuff cheap.

Also, yes it is best to go early in the morning, but if you are starting later for some reason, it is still worth going saling. I have found allot of good things saling late in the day.

Yep, my rule of thumb is to always offer half of their asking price. Usually they will accept it, but you may have to haggle upwards somewhat.

I have been garage saling for almost 15 years and I sell many of the items on Ebay (mostly to finance my action figure collecting). Always keep an eye out for good stuff for re-sale

I have a question: What do you answer to the 10th person who've been asking you if you're going to sell what you bought from them on eBay?

im sorry but i have to ask, why would u pay $100 for someone's used crap?

What exactly is the "used crap" that you THINK you're referring to? You never specified.

We're not talking about some dirty socks here, it depends on whats available. I've seen people sell $500 riding lawnmowers that they have owned for a couple of years but runs like new, $100 is a freakin steal.

I could list a million used things that I would pay $100 for. A full set of golf clubs, big TV, power tools, dining room sets, hand-crafted furniture, computer peripheries (laser printers and scanners), collectibles I know I could sell on ebay for a lot more, etc. etc.

I collect the majority of my "vintage" action figures from garage sales such as He-Man, star wars, TMNT, Marvel, etc. My tip is....most people will have a whole collection and even though I only need/want a couple of figures, I will buy them all because the price is usually better. After that I will sell the ones I don't want on eBay because someone will always need something for their collection. After I'm done selling the ones I don't want, my expenses are usually recouped so I get all my stuff for practically nothing!

yeah I've had great luck like that, once when I was at an RV camp ground with my cousins I scored a hulk-a-mania soakey/ shampoo bottle and a disneyland promotional photo with frame for under $3.00, score!!

In fact, i wanted something that i was willing to pay for on eBay, but i found it for free at a garage sale.

Thanks for the tips so far, and keep em coming! I've been garage saling this summer, and I mostly look for old Winnie the Pooh/Berenstain Bears/Care Bears tapes, which I have found some nice copies of. I've also found some Nick Jr. videos from the 90s, and a lot of Arthur books.

Just went to a church rummage sale last weekend and bought a brand new (almost), fully working organ with songbooks for only 10 dollars! Mom and I had to have some help getting it in the pickup truck. I also found a lot of The New Adventures of Winnie the Pooh tapes at another garage sale (like fifteen of them!). Good times.

                                I have another tip:

If you are buying CDs, check to see if data has been "scratched off" . You can tell if data has been "scratched off" if the CD has "see-thru" spots or lines that shouldn't be there. That damage is irrepairable. I have found that damage a lot on "Platinum" re-releases of PlayStation games.

                                Also:

Check the item you want to buy thoroughly: Don't find yourself buying a bootleg video or counterfeit toy by mistake!

                                Also:

If you are buying a PlayStation or Jaguar joypad second hand, check for missing pins on the Joypad's jack plug (where it connects to the console) . If pins are missing, Don't buy it!
