    Hi everyone!

Garage Sale Season 2007 has just begun in my town, and I'm very interested in going to some of them and looking for old retro cartoon video tapes and movies, along with collectible toys and yard decorations. I will only carry cash with me, wear sneakers to be comfortable, and check items, especially CDs and DVDs, to see if they have any cracks or stains on them. I also will clean dust off my stuff when I get home.

I'm just wondering if any of you collectors out there have some other garage sale tips to share. I especially want some tips in haggling, since I am kind of green at that.

I just went to a few garage sales today, and I found some great buys - old Berenstain Bears tapes for 50 cents each, Heathcliff tapes for 50 cents each, some nice yard ornaments, and some nice Charlie Brown stuff, along with a math Schoolhouse Rock video.

    Thanks!

Ok heres how i do it...anyone else with tips would be great! I will gather all of the things I have and see what 'I' am willing to pay for it...not what they are asking...then i go up and ask them if they are willing to take that amount for the items...most often they say yes cause you are taking their crap and they want to get rid of it fast.I also have done the same thing with single items. If they say no just say 'ok no thanks you' and leave it there on the table.I dont know these people so I dont care if they think Im cheap  .Thats how i go about it...anyone else have any ideas please share cause I would love to know also!!! Happy Shopping!!

Usually I would tell them something under what I am willing just in case they are a haggler so you have somewhere to go.

I think a good rule of thumb is half what you are willing to pay. So if you want to pay 10 bucks, offer 5. Then again, if you're feeling spunky and aren't too concerned that the seller is going to be offended, offer some outrageously low price. Usually, it depends on how well you can read the seller.

I would probably go half aswell but it really depends on the price of the thing to begin with.If the ting that you wanted to buy was $100 there is no way that you would only offer 50.

That's true. You don't say 50 bucks for something that costs 100. I'd go as low as 70 and work on that. Also, keep an eye for old paintings. Some lady five years ago bought a painting for like 20 bucks that turned out to be worth upwards of a 100mil.

im sorry but i have to ask, why would u pay $100 for someone's used crap?

anyway, look for the free stuff. most garage sales has things that are just giving away. Most of the time its crap, but i have gotten some free things that i still have today.

In fact, i wanted something that i was willing to pay for on eBay, but i found it for free at a garage sale.

I wouldnt but there are people who would. Besides usually if someone were to sell something at a garage sale for $100 its probably a painting or some artsy thing or possably a pool table thats in great condition.

See, I think you would offer 50 for something you're willing to spend 100 on, because you know it'll gravitate upwards from there. You aren't trying to pay 50, you're just using that as a jump-off point.

I've never seen a garage sale that gave stuff away for free, but I hope to find one this summer.

As for asking for half the price, that's a pretty good idea, especially if something is obviously overpriced. Typically, the highest I would pay for a cartoon videotape is 50 cents, and probably up to a dollar or two for an old movie.

I know what you mean but I personally wouldnt do that just in case the person was one of those really bitchy if you offend them they will bitch at you at you. I dont know if you have ever gotten a person like that.

No matter how pricey the item is, don't be afraid to haggle down very low. For instance, a guy at a flea market was selling some 16mm films...he had only one reel of cartoons, so I decided to choose that one. He marked it $45, but I haggled him down to $10. I told him I only had $12 on me, and that was true...as he put it "Oh well, looks like you'll enjoy it" ;)

Garage sales are always hit or miss, I generally avoid them altogether. If you're looking for good buys, hit up a flea market. And as someone suggested earlier in this thread, get there bright and early. NEVER go for the listed price, haggle haggle haggle! Also, don't ever show that you really want the item, otherwise the price will go up and stay up. You have to act like you have mild interest.

                                    That's about it.

I am having a garage sale next month...

not really looking forward to it because you have to deal with people who want to lower your prices!

I will probably have refreshments -- what more do you want?

They want you to go through the trouble of deciding what to get rid of, bother to set up a garage sale, have strangers go through your things, have you sit there all day hoping to make a little bit of money so they can try to get things even cheaper....or FREE. Why bother having a garage sale if you don't make any money? I did it once...never again. We were selling books for TWENTY CENTS and some guy kept on insisting on TEN CENTS. TEN CENTS!
I can see how this is some sort of fun for people, but they are forgetting the other side needs to have a little reward, too.
