I might be getting into the early 90s a bit here, but here are some I used to listen to: The Fresh Prince, Young MC, Kid N Play, Grandmaster Flash, Tone Loc, Arrested Development, TLC, Salt N Pepa, LL Cool J, Biz Markie, Digital Underground, Falco (if you're into foreign stuff), Naughty By Nature, Sir Mixalot, Snap, Soul 2 Soul, Technotronic, Def Leppard, Faith No More, The Beastie Boys...

I can't think of more off the top of my head at the moment.

80s rap I think of LL Cool J, Rakim, Sugar Hill Gang, KRS One, Run DMC, Grandmaster Flash and Furious 5, Public Enemy and of course the NWA.

Def Leppard and Faith No More are deffinately the farthest away from hip hop you can get. Leppard was a metal band.

Are we forgetting that, in the '80s (and early '90s), such distinctions did not exist between rock and hip-hop? Def Leppard and Faith No More both did some great hip-hop. Dance music of the time was the branch of hip-hop which held onto its disco roots, unlike today. Falco was hip-hop, but only if you don't think of hip-hop as only an urban American thing. Of course, one should never limit hip-hop to urban America, because that was only a small slice of it at the time (unlike now, when you can't even find hip-hop whose direct descendant isn't today's Gangsta rap).

                                I always liked EPMD. :D

The album Strictly Business is one of my favs.

It's also one of the 3x collection in my library. By 3x, I mean this album, like only a handful of others were so played and wore out, I had to eventually buy them on CD for an everlasting copy.

I was usually really big with albums, then later on with cassette tapes. Finally making the switch to CD. So not very many groups ever got a chance to be in my 3x collection. And now I just buy CDs. :(

Boogie Down Productions, Funky Four Plus One More, Cold Crush Brothers, Pete Rock and C.L. Smooth, Black Sheep, Jungle Brothers, A Tribe Called Quest, Kurtis Blow, Afrika Bambaataa, De La Soul, Gang Starr. I don't even listen to the crap today, just underground stuff.

I agree about the current state of hip-hop. The last time I REALLY listened to it was in the mid-90's. I'm still a HUGE "Tribe Head". Since we're on a 90's tip now, don't forget Souls of Mischief, Onxy, The Pharcyde, Fu-Schnickens, Leaders of the New School, Camp Lo........GREAT MEMORIES! "Ol' Skool is the best school!"

"Relax yourself, girl please set-tle down.........."
"This is it, WHAT?!! Luchini fallin' from the sky. Let's get rich, WHAT?!!...."
                                        "Party people....party people.....can y'all get funky?"
