OK, this is one nobody has probably heard of, but there was a game called The Duel by Accolade for Macintosh. The game over screen was sort of freaky because of how the words were written.

Alright, i'll be serious here: When I was really young I was a little creeped out by the Sonic 1/Sonic 2 game over screen. I don't know why, maybe it was the music.

Not a game over but still...

Please don't laugh at me but back when the first Crash Bandicoot was new, when ever he would lose a life he spins around and drops to the ground in a retro cartoon fashion, anyway it kind of scared me a little and I don't know why, now when that happens I giggle at how silly I was.

I was never scared of any game over screens but I do recall a bunch of people on Youtube saying that they found the game over screen for Donkey Kong Country scary.

Now the mutant turkeys & giant muntant turkeys from the old South Park game for N64 & PS1 that's a completly different story. Those things scared the hell out of me when I was little. From that gobbling sound they made which sounded like a countdown timer to the fact that whenever they pecked you the screen would flash blood red, they were just plain creepy. I could only get through it if I played as Kenny because I was used to always seeing him get killed in the show.

I wasn't scared by the DKC game over screens, but I can see how people would find them scary. But I think that's the way game over screens should be: Scary!

I'm surprised no one mentioned Majora's Mask. Once you let the 3 days pass and you dont go back in time, the moon comes crashing into the earth. In the cut scene, you see the moons scary looking face come slowly into the tower thingy and start a wave of flames thats the start of the Apocalypse. You also get a glimpse of poor Link being thrown and devoured by the waves of death. One of the more darker game overs by Nintendo.

I was never really bugged too much by em, but a few things did make me uneasy.....

                      - That underwater near-death music in the early Sonic Games, god I hated that noise called music, it was like the jaws theme on crack.

                      - The Gannon Screen WAS a little creepy the first time I saw it

                      - The scene in Dragon Warrior I for NES when you join the Dragonlord to rule over the kingdom rather than fight him to win the game (SPOILER ALERT***) - The whole screen turns shades of red, the game locks up, and the music continues to play.

However, none seem to give me a slight feeling of chills more than playing videogames alone at night (or with someone who's become half asleep), and what system, the Atari 2600, and what game(s).....ALL of the pre 1979-1980ish titles.

You know the kind, large square screen, one color characters, 2 large boxes that are supposed to be Zeroes at the top of the screen (Combat, Indy 500, Air-Sea Battle, etc...), and after 21 minutes are up, the game just abruptly stops and the screen changes color....either that or Adventure when you are eaten by a dragon in level 3, then another comes along, eats you through the other dragon's stomach, then the last one comes along to finish the job, only to be picked up by the bat and dragged around the place. They tend to effect me more late at night when all is quiet and my opponent, if I have one, is so tired they seem non-existant outside of just being there.

Good way to put it. They also used that music in Sonic adventure.

The game over screen in Yoshi's Island gave me some chills.

I found the DKC ones hilarious, not scary.

The only one I can think of is SimCity for SNES. The music kinda creeped me out when I lost.

Then you had to start for the beginning. And since the people were dumb asses, I would destroy their town.

The game over screen from Resident Evil.
There is a battle between two wolves inside us all.

I am still scared of when Samus dies on any Metroid prime game.

Samus screams when she dies, and while she's screaming, the screen turns to something that resembles the TV not working.

Earthbound's game over screen. Just a lost soul in a spotlight.

Aladdin (Genesis) - GIVE UP STREET RAT with Jafar's image staring horrifically at the player
Bart's Nightmare (Genesis) - Bart wakes up and he sees his grade. What's worse is an F and the family getting rude remarks to Bart as his paper and the player's final score are posted on the refrigerator!
Decap Attack (Genesis) - A decapitated mummy with angel wings and a halo above his head? Get real!
Powermonger (DOS) - "YOU HAVE BEEN DEFEATED" is one of the goriest I've seen.
Friday the 13th (NES) - "ALL OF YOUR FRIENDS HAVE DIED." Similar to the one from the original Oregon Trail for MS-DOS: "Everyone in your party has died. Many people fail to make it through the Oregon Trail."

                                      - GAME OVER RETURN OF GANON.

                                      - The game over screen from "Return Fire" for the PSX, which features a f***ing LAUGHING SKULL taunting your death. Yes. A laughing. F***ing. Skull.

                                          how could I forget that?

Speaking of Alien, I can recall the game over movie in Alien Trilogy being rather disturbing to watch.
