The movie you're thinking of is called Untamed Heart. It was released in 1993 and featured Christian Slater, Marisa Tomei, and Rosie Perez in the three lead roles. They all worked in a diner. As you said, late one night Tomei's character is mugged and harrassed and Slater rescues her. The fall in love. He's an orphan and thinks he has a baboon heart. (Baboon Heart was the original production title) He plays records for her. They go to a hockey game where he catches the puck. Upon returning home from the game, he dies in the car. It's a very touching comedy/romance with some winning performances by the leads. Don't be ashamed for loving a sweet film like this. It's an underrated gem from the 90's.
