    		 Like many of you, I buy a lot of DVDs. The reason for this rant is new ratings symbols for all movies and games released in Australia, which came into effect last month thanks to the Office of Film & Literature Classification (OFLC).

    To illustrate, check out Volume 10 of the Ninja Turtles series, compared to Volume 11 (released last month):





    How ugly is that freaking symbol?! I absolutely hate everything about it; the size, the colour, the opacity. It doesn't really affect the cover art too much on that DVD, but have a look at the forthcoming Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith DVD:



    It blocks out some of the cover art, and will also ruin my Star Wars DVD collection by making this one stand out like a sore thumb.

    I am enraged by this new ratings system. I have written to my local as well as two metropolitan newspapers (far less ranty and colloquial than this post) in the hope that my fellow countrymen will write in and maybe force the OFLC to rethink their stupid, stupid decision. At the very least, they could make the new symbols stickers, so collectors can peel them off and actually be able to see the cover art.

    Anyway, long story short, I'm now going to be making extensive use of Amazon and US eBay for all my DVD shopping from now on. It's a good thing I have a multi-region DVD player!

    Let's just hope this same thing doesn't happen to you American consumers.

        		 Well, I guess the idea of making them so big and ugly was to increase visibility and awareness of movie ratings, so putting them on the back wouldn't help that objective. I know of a place they can put them, though... 8)

            		 omg, that indeed, is ugly like hell. What are they thinking? I don't think the big guys responsible for this realize there are people collecting stuff and like to have nice boxes as well. I can imagine they think only the movie (disc) counts. This whole "protecting people against violence, sex etc." is going way too far in many ways. I hope you'll succeed becoz if I'd collect those, I wouldn't want them that way. Good luck.

                		 There are several sites out there that host cover scans and custom dvd covers for you to print out and use. Something to think about before you start importing.

                  		 Yeah, I was thinking about printing replacement covers, but my printer is balls. I could always go down to the print shop and get them to print some nice glossy ones, though.

                  There's a company called 'Madman Entertainment' which releases most anime in Australia, and they've started printing reversable covers, where the flip side doesn't have the ugly ratings symbol. Not that it's much help to me, cos I hate anime (other than the classics- Robotech, Astroboy, etc).

                  Importing is good, though, cos if I buy in bulk I don't really end up paying that much more than in Australia (so long as the AUD stays around 0.75 USD or higher), plus I will get titles months before their Down Under release.

                      		 Me too! But you must admit the warnigs are pretty ugly. Thank goodness they don't have those ugly ass warings here in the good* old USA.
