Anybody else here collect vinyl? My wife and I have comprised a fairly nice collection of records, mostly from the 80's. Here are the most recent additions to our collection (which I procured from a small recycle shop near our house):

Yes 90125, nice. Rhino did a great job on their cd reissue.

Unfortunately, CDs and MP3s have made vinyls practically obsolete.

In terms of starting a vinyl collection, I might get into it. I got into collecting cassette tapes three years ago, and they were all 80s albums. The downside to it is that I don't have a good tape player to put them on.

You'll be either wanting to hit the thrift stores for a tape deck or if you have money to spare most boomboxes still have at least one tape player in them although this feature is getting more and more downplayed and you can probably still get one of those component dual tape decks for dubbing.

I say go for the cheap way though myself, and you'll find all kinds of great gear from the 70's, 80's and 90's. Just be sure to test the equipment before you buy it if you go the thrift store way.

I started my record collecting hobby as a little kid in the late 80's and have never lost interest since. Over the last two or three years I've become for the most part disenchanted with cds. Many don't last the test of time, whereas a small hanfull of my records are originals from the late 50's and early 60's and have held up remarkably well. I have decided I will reserve cd buying for absolute must have purchases or when I see very good discounts and make mp3s my main portable format and vinyl my main listeing at home format.

By the way, the total for all seven records came to 3500 yen, or about 30 bucks.

But what if there was a portable vinyl player? Like...you'd have to carry a generator around and lug a giant record player around....but.
                  Actually.
                  I don't know where I'm going with this...........>.>;;

I know dudes with portable record players so they can listen to old records before they buy 'em.

I collect early 90's hip hop, as well as some Jazz, Funk, soul, and some other stuff. I'm not a DJ, but I got 2 turntables and a mixer.

That's not true. A lot of people (myself included) think that vinyl sounds better, that's why they still sell. Cassettes, however, are obsolete.

Also, DJing is really in right now, and you can't "skratch" with an MP3.

Could someone correct me on something? I heard that Randy Jackson, American Idol Judge, was a member of Journey.

I have seen these and find them pretty cool and may one day get one of those or try to find one of those old boomboxes that have a record player in them but in the mean time for sheer portability I love my new Creative Labs mp3 player. It holds nearly every song I've ever liked in something that fits inside my hand and I can store in a wallet in my pocket.

I used to have a pretty decent collection, but sold most of it off. I still have the entire Zeppelin catalog, most of the later Beatles albums and a few other 70's albums. I also agree that if you have a disc in good condition and play it on decent equipment, vinyl does sound better than compact disc.

Here here. The best sounding records in my collection are the Rolling Stones' Tattoo You from '81, a Japanese pressing of the Who's Odds and Sods and an original '73 copy of Yes' tripple live album Yessongs in mint condition. These blow away the majority of cds I've heard. I've got very large amounts of Beatles, Stones, The Who and Frank Zappa, a handful of Pink Floyd and Doors albums and then a varried selection of other stuff. I have about 250 albums and about 20 45s.

What I'd always heard was that vinyl can sound infinitely superior to CDs, but only if you're willing to spend a good chunk of money on expensive equipment to get it to sound just right without ruining your records. A heavy tonearm and dull needle can damage your records permanently.

Unfortunately, I don't really have the space in my apartment for a turntable or a lot of vinyl records. CDs are smaller, so I'm sticking with them for now. (I have about 400 of them.)

I've been collecting records for awhile. It started with trying to get all the Alice Cooper records and just expanded from there. Here's a few pics of some of them. I also included a picture of my pimp ass portable record player

Back on topic. I have quite a large collection of records. Including an original pressing of the very first Kiss album I got when i was about 8 years old.
