I personally think that it fell apart in the late 1990's to the early 2000's.
I liked the early 1990's shows (Salute Your Shorts, Double Dare, Clarissa Explains It All, Are You Afraid Of The Dark) as well as the cartoons from that time period as well (Ren & Stimpy, Rocko's Modern Life, Doug, Rugrats).
The later 1990's shows I liked as well (CatDog, Ginger, All That, Kenan & Kel, Spongebob, Figure It Out, Angry Beavers, Hey Arnold, Wild Thornberrys).
A couple of the early 2000's shows were alright (Rocket Power, Fairly Oddparents, Invader ZIM), but when Chalkzone (or whatever that show is called) came about (same for Jimmy Newtron), I said to myself that Nickelodeon was therefore headed in the wrong direction, so I had lost interest very quickly and turned to the computer.
I was never really a fan of "Pete & Pete", "GAS", "Legend Of The Hidden Temple", but occasionally I would watch those since I hated Cartoon Network, Nickelodeon was the only channel that I would watch when I was young. No need to change it as my sister and I watched it almost all afternoon after getting home from school.
EDIT :
Anyone here remember Gullah Gullah Island ? I watched it although I never really liked it, it, erm, was just too strange.
