...is finally coming to DVD next Tuesday. This is my all time favorite eighties animated film. If you've never seen it, now is the time to check it out. It also has some great special features including the Frank Frazetta documentery Painting With Fire, which I've also been waiting for. :)

If your a fan of eighties animated films, I highly recomend this one.

I've never seen the movie (I don't even think I've ever seen it on television) but I'm a huge Frazetta fan and I'd get the DVD just for that documentary. They play it on IFC every so often and I like it a lot.
I know you are, but what am I?

What is it about? The title sounds cool.
Narrator: Man lives in the sunlit world of what he believes to be reality. But... there is, unseen by most, an underworld, a place that is just as real, but not as brightly lit... a Darkside

It's a sword and sorcery themed movie similar to the Conan movies. The characters are based on Frazetta's art. It's animation is "rotoscoped" which means they filmed the scenes first and then basicly traced over the film. This gives the animation a very realistic feel, especially in the violent scenes. Here's a couple of plot summaries I got off the net.

"It began as a once-in-a-lifetime collaboration between two of the greatest icons of the fantasy genre: Controversial animator Ralph Bakshi (director of Fritz The Cat, Wizards and the original Lord of the Rings) and legendary illustrator Frank Frazetta (creator of the iconic Conan the Barbarian, Vampirella and Edgar Rice Burroughs book covers). It became - and remains - one of the most startling animation epics of all time. Now experience a world unlike any ever seen, where savage warriors, horrific monsters and luscious maidens battle for the soul of civilization in a time of good and evil, pleasure and pain, and Fire & Ice. "

"From their stronghold in Icepeak, the evil Queen Juliana and her son Nekron send forth a wave of glaciers, forcing humanity to retreat south. Nekron sends a delegation to King Jarel in Firekeep to request his surrender, but this is a really ruse for Nekron's sub-humans to kidnap Jarel's daughter, the Princess Teegra. But Teegra makes an escape and comes upon the farmboy Larn, the only survivor of a village razed by glaciers, who offers to escort her back to Firekeep. As Teegra is recaptured, Larn teams with the mysterious Darkwolf to save Teegra and then travel to Icepeak to stop Juliana."

Here's a good shot of the DVD art.

Looks like it's rated PG. That suprises me, I expected at least PG-13. There's no swearing or nudity, but plenty of violence and scantily clad women.
