I used to go barefoot all the time as a kid (summer only, though). Living with my grandmother when I was young (about three or four) in the country (Crewe, Virginia), it seemed to be common, even. She would even take me to the market and no shoes were necessary for me to even enter the store. It was like it was no big deal. I remember that so vividly.
When moving up to Richmond, though, that changed. But I still walked barefoot as a kid outside in the summer...which kinda sucked because I used to run, play, etc., and constantly stub my big toe. >
