I was just posting about an old Nintendo game called Dragon Warrior, and it got me to thinking: am I completely mental, or did Nintendo give away a free copy of Dragon Warrior with Nintendo Power? There are foggy memories somewhere in the back of my mind that seem to be telling me that Dragon Warrior came in a package in the mail with Nintendo Power. The more I think about it, the more sure I am about it.

Anyway, I was recently looking through my old issues of Nintendo Power (amazing, I saved them all in a big stack). Talk about a trip down memory lane! I still even have the issue completely dedicated to Super Mario Bros. 3. Remember Howard and Nester (and their comics)? I honestly think that the old NES-era Nintendo Power was the best video game magazine ever. Maybe it's just because of the focus it had, in that it concentrated on a single system, as opposed to all of them (like most mags).

Whatever it was, I still consider Nintendo Power, along with Game Genie, The Wizard movie, Captain N, the Video Power game show, and the Super Mario Bros. Super Show to be a special part of a Nintendo childhood (the likes of which we'll probably never see again).
I know you are, but what am I?

The free Dragon Warrior game definitely was one of the subscription bonuses, back in the day. You don't see good stuff like that anymore! Can you imagine Nintendo Power or Playstation Monthly today giving away a free, complete, current game with a subscription? Heck, you don't even get a game when you buy the freakin' game system anymore. Remember the days when the cheapest NES package you could get came with a game and TWO controllers?

I used to have the first hundred issues of Nintendo Power. The first year (I think) every other issue would be a strategy guide instead of a magazine. There was one for Super Mario Bros. 3 (I traced all the artwork of Mario in various suits in different scenes and tried to pass it off as my own work), Final Fantasy, and one dedicated to four-player games. I can't remember the others, but I'm sure there were six of them.

The 100th issue had X (from MegaMan X) on the cover. It was a silver cover, but not foil.

I talk with my friends all the time about how much of an influence that Nintendo was during our childhood. Even national events such as the Nintendo World Championships really added to the whole experience. It's a shame that kids these days don't have those extra special things to remember from their youth.

I recently purchased a set of Nintendo Power magazines on Ebay and they really do bring back a lot of fond memories. :D

I don't think I could've beat Final fantasy without the dungeon maps in Nintendo Power. I used to mark every room I went in and what was in there, and if I died I'd know if that room was worth going back into. It helped out alot. I found it usefull on alot of games and it also influenced the games that I purchased. Like I wouldn't have bought Maniac Mansion if I hadn't read about it in NPand it turned out to be one of my favorite games.
I don't know about you, Miss Kitty, but I feel so much... yummier
