I was browsing through the shows listed in the 90's section and I was extremely displeased to discover that people were stealing pictures from my website (www.blastfromthepasttv.com) and using them as the pictures for the shows. First of all, I do understand that I could just go in and edit the pictures, but that would not put a stop to people stealing from my website (and others' websites too)
Before I go further in depth, I want to make it clear that I have never ever stolen anything from RetroJunk in any form whatsoever; ie: information, pictures, videos, etc. I respect this website very much and I would expect that I receive the same respect with my website.
Now here is the list of the shows that have stolen images. I am positive that they are stolen because they are the same as ones found on my website (you can go there and check for yourself) and also the titles were never changed and they were saved as what they are called on my server.
The Addams Family Donkey Kong Country Dumb and Dumber Gargoyles – The Goliath Chronicles Godzilla the Series Goosebumps Jim Henson’s Dog City Jumanji Jungle Cubs Kablam! Life with Louie Masked Rider Men in Black – The Series The Mask Ninja Turtles – The Next Mutation Phantom 2040 Robocop The Real Ghostbusters Sonic the Hedgehog (first one on list alphabetically) Tales from the Cryptkeeper Taz Mania
I understand that RetroJunk has been trying to expand recently and in order to do so, it has given its visitors the option of updating the website themselves. Now this creates a problem because there are really no regulations on how these visitors obtain images and/or videos. Like my case, they can just be stolen from websites and then used by the visitors to update the pages on RetroJunk. I wholeheartedly believe that the owners of RetroJunk would not do this themselves. Based on visiting RetroJunk, I believe that its owners would want the website to maintain a high degree of integrity and would only put things on the website that they created themselves.
But it seems like the lack of regulation between the visitors has opened up problems of theft. I really do not think that it is fair to those who have had things taken from them, including myself. I know that I have put a lot of hard work and many, many countless hours into working on my website. I do not have anyone else helping me out and everything you see on that server was created by me, including every single image and every single video clips. I don't appreciate people just going through the site and then taking images of rare shows and just taking them like nothing happened. Many of these shows were hard to obtain and it took time to acquire them, encode the videos of the themes, and then take screen shots. I knew that there would be the temptation to steal video clips, which is why I put my website watermark on them; but I never considered people to steal images. I mean, do I have to go through the hundred of pages on my server and add some HTML code so that right-clicking is disabled? I didn't think people were that bad...I don't know the answer.
I just think that this raises some issues on how far people can go to contribute. I understand that RetroJunk would like to obtain as many intros and have as many shows as possible, but I think it should be asked where the media comes from. Did the user encode the theme him or herself or did he/she just find it on another website and think that it is ok to just post on another? Of course, there is no problem if people ask the website owner before taking stuff.
I don't hold any grudges against RetroJunk or anything of the sorts. All I ask is that my pictures be taken down and that none are stolen again in the future.
Thanks to everyone for listening and I am sorry that I have to bring up a negative subject, but I felt that this was an important issue and that something had to be said to prevent the same type of problem from reoccurring.
Well I understand where you're coming from. I have (had) some rare clips that were on my site and wound up here. So now I am watermarking all my videos. Pictures I don't mind too much cuz I usually have tons and allow people to take 1 or 2. You can always hit "print screen" to get around disabled right-click anyway. But I do have a ton of stuff (more than I can serve!) so I've been adding lots here just to get it out. But technically when you put something on the web, it's considered automatically copyrighted. I learned that from my web classes in college. It's just common courtesy not to take them. But you can't really do much about it.
Anyway if Vertex does take them down, I know I can replace a few of them with things from my collection.
because we don't all have the same equpment as you have. I know i don't. I'd love to make intros for the site but my computer was made to do that. And here the kicker....most people's computers are like mine. We'd thank you for sharing but you seem to want to hog what you got like a kid who won't let others play with his toys.
I am not trying to hog anything by any means. If I were hogging things, then I wouldn't spend the time that I do on my website to provide video clips and other lesser known information. I put a lot of effort into tracking down old VHS tapes of stuff from the 90's such as Fox Kids, etc. and I try my best to locate as many old commercials from the networks as possible. I want others to enjoy what I can experience. Finally, if I wanted to hog it all, I would just keep my VHS tapes to myself and watch them when I want to and not allow anyone else to see them.
I am expressing my frustration because I put my time and effort into making my own website grow. I spend hours upon hours encoding and taking screenshots, etc. while someone just spends seconds right clicking and downloading a picture and then using it to benefit another website. I want to establish an identity for my website and it's pretty hard to do when others are stealing stuff from it. What would have happened if I had no watermark on my videos? People would just steal them and post them on RetroJunk (like they did with Mystie), which would mean there's no reason for my website because RetroJunk would have all my video clips anyways. I mean, RetroJunk watermarks its own videos for the same reason.
Don't get me wrong, RetroJunk is an excellent website and I highly respect it for what it is; however, people cannot think that just because it has the most themes available out of any website means that other websites should shut down to solely help this site out. Theoretically, I could vastly help out RetroJunk because I have so many pictures, themes, video files (over 500 and counting), and information, etc., but if people wanted to get that stuff then they could do so by visiting my site. I understand that there will always be friendly competition between multiple websites of the same genre, but I never thought that such websites would try to steal from each other.
Mystie has her own website because she, like I, enjoys maintaining a website and providing rare clips to those on the internet. Our sites may never be as popular or contain as much stuff as RetroJunk, but the fact is, we take pride in what we do and do get upset when others break our trust.
This is a problem that I was afraid would come up. I totally see where you are coming from and I have been trying to implement ways to screen for non-original submissions. Unfortunatly it is next to impossible to screen pictures without watermarks or videos without watermarks. Unfortunately I know that many videos and pictures already out there do not have a watermark. I reject all content that is submitted with another sites URL on it. Besides searching a files filename (Which I may have to start doing) I am not sure how else to verify the original source.
Now a word to the people submitting content to the site. You guys are great but please do not take things from other sites. On top of some instances of it being against copyright guidelines it is quite rude. Also I want Retro Junk to be a place that you can find things you can’t find anywhere else. This is what will make Retro Junk great.
I would hate to have to ban someone for trying to help the site so please be mindful of this.
spidey4545, I will remove the images.
When I die, I want to die peacefully, in my sleep, like my grandpa did. Not like the screaming passengers in his car.
Well honestly videos or filmclips I can understand, but an image which sole purpose is to give us a better view of how the series looked, or rather you see a name but don't recall the show, but when you see it in conjunction with an image from the series/movie you might recall it.
It's not like RJ.com is exclaiming that they made the sceens.
Of course asking for permission to use the screenshot is common courtesy, but not really neccesary since most likely the one which took the screencaps don't hold the rights to the series/movie.
I commend you on making such a site. Bumpers and promos? I can totally remember them, but they're impossible to find otherwise. I know, no one likes having their hard work being exploited. But I do hope that maybe folks from here will visit your own site more often for a dose of Vitamin 90s, and maybe help you get some things that you need.
