That works because the moiseture in your breath temporarily makes the oxidized copper pins more conductive. Unfortunately, that moisture is also what will eventually destroy those same pins. It's like rust. The effects of cleaning with a cotton swab and alcohol (or yes, a pencil eraser) will keep the game working longer than blowing in it will because it actually removes the oxidation. isn't there a warning on the back of NES cards which say not to use alcohol ? That's because they wanted you to use their official cleaning kit, which they no longer sell and which includes--guess what--cleaning swabs and a tiny bottle of isopropyl alcohol.  |
