Anyone who grew up during the 80's would realize that no other game system could beat the memories of original nintendo since it was the first GOOD side scrolling game system to come out.
Since you seem to be putting very little stock in any prior system to the NES, I am curious as to your memories of the atari, coleco vision, etc.., and video arcades of the early 80's. While the nes provided many priceless memories, I too share the same for video arcades, the atari, coleco vision, commadore 64 and others. Pitfall and Moon Patrol were quite the side scrolling games.

Sure snes had better graphics, but the objective had been done. Anyone can argue atari had their shot, but the "oh, sh*t" factor couldn't compair.
There was a pretty good factor before Nintendo hit the scene. Believe me, we were thrilled and practically did backflips since we were able to have a home video game system.

I'm sure that back then, kids were fighting and pulling for their chances at being the next player in the next round of space invadors or pong, but that excitement couldn't compare to the first contra game, or even to the immortal mario bros.
You must not have a good recolection then.

Nintendo paved the way by adding the fun factor into video games. I mean, come on, who the hell wanted to play pacman forever?? Where the hell did pong take us?
Fun was always there regardless of the graphics or gameplay. Nintendo just helped it evolve. Pong did alot for the gaming industry. That primitive game helped turn home gaming systems into what they are today.

All the GOOD games were originated through nintendo. It's why zelda and maro bros. are still the focus of many new games. I know, I know, but pacman is still out there too. I didn't say atari was bad, did I?
Good is such a broad word. The times were much different before Nintendo and it was practically unthinkable to have a continuing franchise.

Atari may have been out first, but it was nothing in comparison to nintendo's true, and very original, home video gaming experience.
Atari set the standard for future systems to come. For that, they deserve much credit.
