Sure it was crappy and looked nothing like the arcade (Ms Pac Man was so much better) but at the time it was the closest thing to the arcade that was available.. I played it a lot too.

... they dub the crappy Atari sounds with the arcade sounds

    So sayeth Wikipedia:

"The poor quality of the port is blamed on the Atari marketing department's rush to bring the game to the market. They asked Tod Frye, one of Atari's principal game programmers, to do the port; he showed them a prototype he had already developed. Rather than miss the approaching 1981 Christmas season, Atari produced the game based on the unfinished prototype."

The company was sued for false advertisement if I remember correctly, and so they started giving the Pac-Man's for free when you purchased the new atari 2600's. Also the story from atari is the fact that they were rushed to put it on the market, and so did not have the time to make it very graphical like the arcaid; however the "Like Arcaid" was the fact that you had to guid pac-man through the mazes, and eat the ghost monsters. As for the comments of E.T. that is another story as to how it was not falsly advertising, because of the fact that E.T. was not like the movie, but at least the graphics were better there :P

This was and still is one of my personal favorate Atari 2600 games, I'll admit that the graphics are crude and it is very hard to tell when its safe to eat the ghosts and of course its awful history. But still I find it fun and it's better than the unplayable "E.T." game.

Yeah the atari 2600 version was bad it was way better on the atari 400
KRW Posted 7 years 1 month ago
Besides, this game and E.T. only helped make the crash of '83 possible.
