It is dirived from the Orwellian novel 1984.

The ad is a pun on the book, which is about 1984 being a Police State in a barren future.

That is why it is so stylistically ahead of it's time.

I love the Mac. It is way better than the PC. That commercial was indeed a classic. Microsoft doesn't give a darn about Windows. The Mac is top notch.

What an awesome commercial for a computer that came out 23 years ago! Gotta give them credit for that.
