It has always been owned by Burger King, they just had copyright issues when they wanted to make it Burger King in Australia, but there was already a trademarked small chain named Burger King owned by a guy named Jack. They discussed, and Jack let them introduce their chain in Australia, as long as they go under a different name. Burger King let him change the name, and after some discussion, the name became Hungry Jack's.
