I just recently read the story, it went something like this: Tony Musante couldn't hack the TV series grind and begged out of his contract (or was fired, one of the two), and ABC hired Robert Blake as his replacement in the series. As production progressed, they all decided that they might as well can the original concept and go with a fictional character based around the acting talents of Blake, who, in style and substance, was night and day to Musante.
