This scared the fucking shit out of me when i was a kid.
acparson Posted 8 years 8 months ago
Just before my time, but I remember seeing this on old videotapes. I thought it was cool, but it scared my brother.

wow this freakin scared me when i was little

    MarchingTwinkie3 Posted 9 years 10 months ago
They still use the sound and the WGBH logo.
paktype Posted 10 years 9 months ago
The shows I associate this bumper with are "Zoom" (the original from the '70s, not the crappy remake) and Masterpiece Theater.
vernonbishop Posted 11 years 5 days ago
I think the radio equivalient of this station does the show Car Talk... : o?

Seen it a million times over the years... : I
ThaMasterHand Posted 11 years 1 month ago
I remember this was on Zoom. I was scared of a lot of things when I was little, but I was never scared of this. The thing that scared me for my entire childhood was the Eat n Park ad right before Mr. Rodgers *shudders*
Celeste Posted 11 years 4 months ago
Well, they had to find some way of giving the kiddies nightmares that would haunt them well into adulthood.
    RetroMetro1977 Posted 11 years 4 months ago
Ohh, yeah! I remember this logo quite painfully. As a child, somehow the beyond eerie sound used to cause me nightmares... And it still causes me nightmares now and then.
    frank91965 Posted 11 years 5 months ago
This was shown on all PBS(Public Broadcasting Stations). Shows originating from this station in Boston, Massachusetts included Masterpiece Theatre, ZOOM, The French Chef with Julia Child, Evening at Pops with Arthur Fiedler, Last Chance Garage, Crockett's Victory Garden and Where In The World Is Carmen San Diego.

I remembers these shows when I was growing up.
    douro20 Posted 11 years 6 months ago
I believe the music was produced with a Sequencial Circuits Prophet V.
    spongeyfan98 Posted 11 years 7 months ago
"Now-a-days It's seen at the end of ZOOM on PBS, but without the Boston." Also On The Arthur TVSeries Without The Boston.
Heralde Posted 11 years 7 months ago
Now this reminds me of robots attacking! I wonder why all those old logo had to be so startling. Still, very classic!
Gooball Posted 11 years 7 months ago
Now-a-days It's seen at the end of ZOOM on PBS, but without the Boston.

    I did that.
bicostp Posted 11 years 8 months ago
Looks like someone did upload this bumper's rare older sibling:
    retroguy78 Posted 11 years 9 months ago
This bumper always scared the crap out of me.
MicroMan Posted 11 years 10 months ago
Thanks RetroBen81 for remembering that version of the logo. Learn more about the older logo here:

Someone needs to upload that one. Although that site says it probably won't be heard of again, it has to be out there. They said the NET logo was extinct too, but that didn't stop it from appearing here.

BTW, what did the font of that older logo look like?
    MegtheEgg86 Posted 11 years 11 months ago
One of my absolute favorites, no matter how much it reminds me of "This Old House."
carsonmax Posted 11 years 11 months ago
Another bumper I completely forgot about.
    RetroBen81 Posted 12 years 14 days ago
There was another WGBH logo which used the same music, except the logo video is very rare and not many people can find it now. The logo video was used from 1974-78, and some experts say it could still be seen on certain reruns of "Julia Child".

The video of the '74-'78 logo begins on a light grey background (yellow on color broadcasts), with the black WGBH letters (blue on color broadcasts) zooming out from the front of the screen into the vanishing point. Then the word BOSTON (in either black or blue) zooms in from this same vanishing point, taking up the entire screen (a la Viacom's V of Doom) and creating a black (or blue) background, concluding with the word PRESENTS in grey (or yellow) zooming in.

    ah..this is not that scary
Retroboi Posted 12 years 3 months ago
    Pbs Bumpers are always creepy
    Ilove1990s Posted 12 years 4 months ago
I definitely remember this bumper as its still used today on other PBS shows.
ooliyo Posted 12 years 4 months ago
I remember this bumper, they still play it. Sounds trippy.
I know that this wasn't done by computer, how did they animate this. I looks so sophisticated.
    bryon395 Posted 12 years 5 months ago
    >>>i HATED that thing!
shiroihikari Posted 12 years 6 months ago
Aghh! That beeping sound is scary! I always hated this logo.
andrewrae Posted 12 years 6 months ago
If you're like me and not scared of this logo, odds are you'll find it sickeningly dated. Take it from someone who's 3 again whenever he sees it.
    jh618 Posted 12 years 10 months ago
i remember this it was on before they showed zoom
Celeste Posted 12 years 11 months ago
They had it on after a cooking show that Jullia Child did, the name of her cooking show escapes me at the moment, but it was the first time I had ever watched Jullia Child do anything that was worth watching. Of course everything that Jullia Child does is worth watching.
    musicradio77 Posted 12 years 11 months ago
I've seen the WGBH logo before since it was on a number of PBS shows. The same sound was heard after Arsenio Hall's "Late Show" promo from the pre-Letterman days you'll might the same sound effect for WGBH where it does not show up on the screen after the last 35 seconds of blank screen was shown until the sound was heard.
    mr3urious Posted 12 years 11 months ago
Like I said in the first post, kimsy, yes. Only it's shorter.

Also, this sounds like an army of robots powering up! LOL!
    kimsy520 Posted 12 years 11 months ago
oh I definitely remember this I think they showed it before "This Old House" And I think they kept showing it through the 80s, then in the 90s there was a voice saying "This is WGBH Boston" or something like that. Do they still show this?
    Lottech96 Posted 12 years 11 months ago
No and uh No but However It was one of those errie 80s Computer CGIs that made us hide our eyes or earseither it was too bright or too lowd . In this case too lowd, or just seems it. We see the Logo form up as the errie gigibblbits sound, then a Lowd Howl and We're reasured when we see the soft boston sign appears.
Celeste Posted 12 years 11 months ago
Why do they call this bumper the "flash of doom?"? Did it cause seizures in epileptics or what?
Celeste Posted 12 years 11 months ago

    mr3urious Posted 12 years 11 months ago
Ah, I remember the ol' WGBH Flash of Doom after certain programs on PBS! They still show it today, but it's shorter (i.e., it doesn't show the beeping with the logo being drawn in).
