They were renamed WHAM-TV because their then-sister radio station WHAM-AM was called that. A few months later, sister station in Syracuse, WIXT, was renamed WSYR-TV.

I never really took notice of the change from WOKR to WHAM. I still think of it as WOKR quite frankly.

Right before the "ABC Sunday Night Movie" opening, there was a short promo for the 11:00 News. It was on Channel 13 in Rochester, NY as WOKR-TV. That was the original call letters, but it was changed to WHAM-TV (not associated with George Michael's duo Wham!)
