Top 10 90s Animated Movies

My Personal Top 10 Favorite Animated 90s Movies.

This is my 5th article, and I decided to make it about my top 10 favorite animated movies of the 90s, but before I begin, I have something to say; I think that it's pretty sad that out of my first four articles, only one was never sent to the back page.

Ah, the 90s, the decade where CGI Animation was getting popular, when celebrities started voice acting in movies, and the last decade in the 20th Century. The 90s was also the decade that I was born in. Just like the 80s, the 90s had some awesome cartoons and animated movies (at least to me), and here's my 10 favorite animated movies of this decade (this is similar to an article that Dalmatianlover wrote, but that was for the 80s).

10. Pokemon: The First Movie(1999)
Now, some of you might be saying "Wait a minute, Pokemon sucks, how can you have that on this list?" Well, just so you know, I used to be a huge Pokemon fan (my brother still is), besides, the first season was the greatest. when I first saw this movie, I loved it. This was the first Pokemon movie, and definitely the best, it has the first 151 pokemon in it, and has all the characters. This was one of the few times that I cried over a movie, near the end where Ash gets turned to stone, that scene still makes me cry. This was a pretty good movie and if you're currently a fan of the anime, you should check it out.

9. Balto(1995)
Now here's a movie that my brother used to love. As crazy as it may sound, Balto was a film that was actually based on a true story. It was about this racing dog (I think, I haven't seen this movie in a while) that has to get medecine and get it to a hospital filled with sick kids. One thing that I love about this movie is that it's sweet and modest, and I've always loved it. Balto spawned two sequels: Balto II: Wolf Quest and Balto III: Wings of Change, I haven't seen either, but since most direct-to-video sequels aren't that good, I don't plan to. This was Amblin Entertainment's last animated movie until Monster House in 2006. This was an entertaining movie that has always been one of my favorites and one of my brother's favorites.

8. Tarzan(1999)
Another one of my favorites, and also a classic. Probably the last 2D animated Disney film to be released in the 20th Century, Tarzan is a great film and has one of my favorite songs from a Disney movie (You'll Be in My Heart). The plot is about this man named Tarzan who was born and raised in the jungle, then three people come and although two of them are flattered by Tarzan, one wants him dead. At times, it was so emotional and sad, I get very teary. I still remember seeing this in the theaters with my brother, and he also loves this movie, and he watches it whenever it comes on Toon Disney. I haven't seen Tarzan in a long time, but I still remember a lot. I also loved TV series. Overall, this was a good movie and is a must see to all fans of Disney films.

7. The Rugrats Movie(1998)
Okay, we've gotten to a movie that was based on an animated TV show, and it was very good too. The entire plot was very exciting, and is one of the few times where the movie introduces a character that becomes a main character for the rest of the series. Rugrats is my brother's favorite Nicktoon (I don't know if it is anymore because he loves Avatar: The Last Airbender), and he loves this movie. Out of all the Rugrats movies, this was probably the best (I haven't seen the 3rd one, but I hate The Wild Thornberrys), and I think it would be interesting to know that this used to be the animated movie based on an animated show that got the most money at the box office until another movie pasted it the summer of 2007 (I think we all know what movie that was). Many people say this was the downfall of Rugrats, but I didn't think it went downhill until Kimi was added. This is my fourth favorite movie based on a cartoon (behind The Spongebob Squarepants Movie, The Simpsons Movie, and South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut), and if you like Rugrats, then this movie is a must see.

6. Aladdin(1992)
Now let's take a trip back to ancient Egypt with Aladdin. Aladdin is one of those films that I've always loved to watch, and it has a very good plot. The plot is about a street rat who finds a genie and becomes a king, then the evil Jafar takes over and Aladdin has to stop him. This movie got really funny once Aladdin met Genie, and Genie was what made this movie so funny, and there was one person who made Genie so funny: Robin Williams. If Robin Williams didn't play Genie, he probably wouldn't be that funny. Another thing that makes this movie great is the songs, I mean, "Friend Like Me" and "A Whole New World" are impossible for me not to love. This movie was released the same year my brother was born, and I would see it in theaters if I had a time machine. I also loved the TV show. To sum it all up, this movie is a classic, and is definitely your typical good Disney movie.

5. The Hunchback of Notre Dame(1996)
Paris is known for its great food (like in Ratatouille), but do you ever think on what keeps this city awake, the bells of Notre Dame, that's what. The songs were fantastic, my favorite was "Out There", I used to sing it all the time, "God Help the Outcasts" was also good although it felt like a Christian song and I'm Jewish, but it was still a great song. The plot was also great, the last 15 minutes or so is definitely how to use a fighting scene in a movie. The villian in this movie, like many other Disney villians, is truely evil, trying to burn down Paris just to find the Gypsie Esmeralda. This movie was pretty controversial because it was dark and mature, but I don't mind, it was a great movie, that's all that matters. Overall, it's a good movie and if you like Disney, then you should check this out.

4. A Goofy Movie(1995)
A movie starring Goofy has to be great, and it is. The whole plot makes sense, the songs were great, and the voice acting couldn't be better. The plot is about Goofy and Max having a father and son relationship, but Max wants to impress a girl named Roxanne, so Goofy and Max drive across a country to a Power Line concert. This movie is basically Goof Troop but with Max as a teenager, and apperently Max and P.J. made a new friend since they were kids: Bobby. I'm not going to say that Bobby is a teenage version of Goofy, but he's still funny, and should've been in the movie for a little longer. The songs are my favorite part, I can't even say which one's my favorite, there all just so good. Like I said before, Goofy is comedic genius, and having him star in a movie is one of Disney's best ideas. An Extremely Goofy Movie is good too.

3. South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut(1999)
Here's a movie that's so funny, that the first time I saw it, I could hardly breath by the time it ended. The whole plot is Kyle, Stan, Cartman, and Kenny go to a canadian R rated movie and start cursing, then the US and Canada start a war and if Terrance and Phillip (the stars of the canadian movie) get killed, Satan and Saddam Hussein are going to take over the world. The jokes were great, the first 30 minutes is the funniest, and you'd laugh at least once. The songs were the best part, I can't help but sing along, and this is coming from someone who hates musicals. This and The Simpsons Movie are tied for my favorite animated movie based on an animated TV show. Here's an interesting fact: This film was ranked #5 on Bravo's 100 Funniest Movies. Overall, this is a great film and if you love South Park, then you'll love this.

2. The Lion King(1994)
What movie do you first think of when you hear "Hakuna Matata" or "Circle of Life"? That's right, The Lion King, well, that or you know a movie that I don't know. The plot is about this cub named Simba, the son of king Mufasa, who wants to be king, but his uncle Scar kills Mufasa and Simba thinks that he did it, so he runs away and meets Timon and Pumbaa who teach him Hakuna Matata but runs into Rafiki and decides to go back where he challenges Scar and becomes king at the end. The songs are definitely one of the highlights of the film. I mean, how can you not like "I Just Can't Wait To Be King", "Hakuna Matata", "Circle of Life" and "Can You Feel The Love Tonight"? People call this a rip-off of Kimba the White Lion, but some people (even me) didn't even know about that show. This film was released the same year I was born, only I'm three months younger than this movie. In my opinion, this was the best Disney 2D animated 90s movie, and you should check it out.

My #1 choice is a tie between two films, and here they are...........................................

1. Toy Story(1995) and Toy Story 2(1999) (tie)
Now, I have to say, many of you probably had a feeling that at least one of the Toy Story movies was going to be on the list, and ever since I first started the list, I wanted to have Toy Story as #1, but since I couldn't decide on which one was better, I decided to have them tied at #1.
First, I'll talk about the first Toy Story. Altough I might've seen Toy Story in the theaters, I don't exactly remember it (after all, I was 1). The plot is about this cowboy doll named Woody and this space ranger action figure named Buzz who are trapped in a house of a kid who does bad things to toys, so they teach him a lesson and Woody and Buzz become best friends. This was the first full-legnth computer-generated animated movie and is among the list of "Films Considered the Greatest Ever".
Now I'll talk about the second Toy Story. Now this one I DO remember seeing in theaters, and I'll treasure it always. The plot is about Woody getting his arm torn and being kidnapped by this man and Buzz and some other toys who were seen in the first movie head out to rescue him. While many of the toys in this movie return from the first one, it also features some brand new characters, and many of them are very good too.
To sum it up, these are great movies, but then again, it's from Pixar, and if you ask me, Pixar has NEVER made a bad film, on a scale of 1 to 5, Pixar has had maybe a 3.5 out of 5 movie at worst.

There's my list, I hoped you liked it. Most of you will probably disagree with me on Pokemon, heck, some could even say this isn't retro enough, and I'm probably missing some of your favorites, but in case I am, they fall under one of these catagorys (yes, I took this from Dalmatianlover):
A: I haven't seen it
B: I don't like it
C: I forgot all about it
or D: It just missed the list
If it's C or D, then consider it an honerable mention. Also, I noticed that most of these movies were from Disney, but the 90s had my favorite disney movies.

Pictures taken from Wikipedia. My next article will probably be on how much I hate the "Life Sucks Now" articles.

PS: Sorry if I wasn't accurate with the plots, I didn't want to give much away.

We can debate this list until the end of time.
    Trueblue94 Posted 3 years 10 months ago
Sorry! My first comment on Hunchback disappeared, so I typed it again. I didn't realize it just got backed up a little bit, my bad. XD
    Trueblue94 Posted 3 years 10 months ago
A little late to comment, but... a great list! Here are my thoughts on the movies you listed:

Pokemon Movie: I still am a Pokemon fan; just not as big as I used to be. I loved this movie when I was freaking obsessed. Aww... I try not to cry during movies but that scene where Ash turned to stone almost got me. I also agree with you that the first season is the greatest.

Hunchback: Not really a personal favorite, but it's very, very good. It has a wonderful soundtrack and theme, but I don't think a lot of little kids would be able to fully understand the movie.

Balto: This is one of my absolute favorite animated movies not made by Disney! I think it's pretty underrated too. I've never seen the sequels either and don't plan to.

Tarzan: I love this movie! Heh, "You'll Be In My Heart" is a favorite of mine too, especially the full version. I think Phil Collins made two wonderful Disney soundtracks- this one and Brother Bear, another dear favorite of mine.

Rugrats movie: I like this movie. The only things I didn't like were the gross jokes and how wolves are always picked on as bad guys. You and I are mostly on the same page; I think Rugrats wasn't as great as it was when Dil became a part of the cartoon, but I think it officially started to suck when Kimi was added.

Aladdin: One of the greatest Disney films ever produced, no lie. I've loved ever since I was little, and Jasmine is one of my favorite Disney princesses.

Hunchback of Notre Dame: Not really a personal favorite, but it's still very, very good. it has a wonderful soundtrack and theme, but I don't think a lot of little kids would be able to fully understand the movie.

A Goofy Movie: I've never seen this one. I've never been big on Goofy, but it seems like a movie worth checking out...

South Park: I haven't seen this one either. Personally, I don't care for South Park. I never really got into many adult cartoons other than Simpsons and Futurama.

The Lion King: My all-time favorite Disney movie. It seems cliche for people to include this high in top 10 lists, but really, what's not to love? Awesome plot, soundtrack, animation, characters, and theme. Also, it's sequel was better than most direct-to-video/DVD sequels. (not as great as the first though)

Toy Story 1 + 2: Toy Story is a great movie. I haven't seen the second one since it was released in theaters, but I remember some things about it and I do remember liking it. Pixar makes excellent movies. There are three I still have yet to see (Wall-E, Incredibles, Ratatoullie), but I've loved all the others I've seen except Cars, which I thought was...meh. A Bug's Life is my favorite though.

Toy story 2 is better because Jessie is in it

    HELP ME!
I'm looking for a movie, I believe it was made in the early 90s. It's a about a polarbear(icebear or something) who is chosen to be the leader. His mum is the queen I think. But to prove that he can be their leader, he has to climb up a waterfall. The first time he tries he fails, and runs away in shame. I think he finds some kind of circus, and become friends with a panda(?). He returns to the waterfall, and his family, later in he movie, strong enough to manage the quest. WHAT IS NAME OF THIS MOVIE?

I have looked everywhere.. If you have a clue about what I'm speaking about, just shout out! :)
    natenate6731 Posted 4 years 8 months ago
This is a great list I agree with you on all these movies.
    futuramafan95 Posted 5 years 26 days ago
    great aritcle!
    mlw1984 Posted 5 years 5 months ago
I love the South Park movie. I love the songs "Uncle Fucker" and "Blame Canada" as seeing that South Park is one of my favorite cartoons.

I like all of other movies too with the exception of the Pokemon and Rugrats movies.
    joecool85 Posted 5 years 6 months ago
Toy Story was one of the best Pixar films of all time, the sequel is even better! (It spun-off "Buzz Lightyear of Star Command: The Movie", for pete's sake!)
pikatob Posted 5 years 6 months ago
    i only like 3 and 10
GotSonic Posted 5 years 6 months ago
    Great list!

I totally remember all of these!

and even though I was only 6, yeah I totally remember
RetroToon Posted 5 years 6 months ago
Hey, these are just the movie he likes! And I didn't mind his list at all cause I grew up with most of these movies like he did so I really related to this article a bit, even if some of them aren't all GREAT movies, so there!
    Demu300 Posted 5 years 6 months ago
whew* this lists stinks,Rugrats and Pokemon? What about Princess Mononoke or the Prince of Egypt? Or even the Gumby movie that came out in 1995?
Spongeroks Posted 5 years 6 months ago
Pokemon, I can understand, but why does everyone hate Toy Story 2 so much? That movie is pure gold.
    nhobbs122803 Posted 5 years 6 months ago
I dont agree with you, im not trying to pick on you but toy story 2? that was horrible, and what about pokemon, or rugrats? There were so many more that were better!
    pimp3491 Posted 5 years 6 months ago
Great list, other than Pokemon...To me, it marked the beginning of the change from the 90's to the 00's. And also, its the thing that killed Nintendo 64 in my eyes.
RetroToon Posted 5 years 6 months ago
Why do people here hate Toy Story 2? I never thought it did anything to ruin the Toy Story name.
RyTheRetroGuy Posted 5 years 6 months ago
I like Toy Story. Bu Toy Story 2?!? Don't let me go there...........hate that Disney movie with a passion!
BloodMist Posted 5 years 6 months ago
Anastasia and Nightmare Before Christmas?Bah, both are very overrated, IMO.Nightmare has god awful songs, for example, though for the most part, i enjoy the story. The animation is easily the most stunning part.Anastasia is just boring. The non-sanitized real story is far more interesting.
RetroToon Posted 5 years 6 months ago
Uh IkeAurion, I don't recall Pikachu fighting Blastoise at all in the movie. For one thing he was too busy fighting his Pikachu clone and Mewtwo's Blastoise was too powerful.
IkeAurion Posted 5 years 6 months ago
I remember I was really pissed off by the pokemon movie because Pikachu beaten Blastoise(My favorite pokemon) and Blastoise was one of the baddies. But nice article.
volkstraum Posted 5 years 7 months ago
Also, Anastasia and Nightmare before Christmas pwn just about every horrible movie on that list. Although a few Disney films manage to stand out; namely Lion King and Toy Story.
volkstraum Posted 5 years 7 months ago
You grew up with these movies? Why not grow up a little more.
fuddwupper Posted 5 years 7 months ago
I cant beleive i still remember that tarzan poster. I watched that when i was 6!
RetroToon Posted 5 years 7 months ago
So rowemedic, are you saying The Lion King is crap? Some taste you have. :P
djbriguy Posted 5 years 7 months ago
    nightmare before christmas anyone?

Goofy Movie has to be my favorite animated movie of all time.
    Ilovethe90s Posted 5 years 7 months ago
I agree with most of those except for the hunchback, instead you should have put the theif and the cobbler (can't spell sorry) but awesome list nonetheless
shiroihikari Posted 5 years 7 months ago
Not a bad list. Definitely some quality films in there, but I respectfully disagree with some of your choices. :P I just can't imagine putting Pokemon on the same tier as the likes of The Lion King.
avienndha Posted 5 years 7 months ago
    Good article!

I would have to say the only one I would miss is "The Iron Giant"...otherwise nice list!
rowemedic Posted 5 years 7 months ago
it was a okay article but every movie you chose in my opinion is pure crap. all 10 pure crap.
    Mario6 Posted 5 years 7 months ago
Toy story 3 is coming out soon
secretvixen Posted 5 years 7 months ago
I was never a fan of Pokemon...hated that craze! Anyway, The Lion King was probably one of the best animated 90's film of all time.
SatansHand Posted 5 years 7 months ago
I couldn't agree more with the list. Being born in 1990 and being able to see the entire decade, i'd have to say its my favorite (of course only being able to base it against the 00's). Even after becoming a Death Metal and Black Metal guitarist I still love all of these movies, and pokemon is one of my favorites even though i don't like the series. (Funny image: imagine me and my friends playing a black metal song about satan and then seeing me watching god damned pokemon. Tee Hee)
RetroToon Posted 5 years 7 months ago
Since you mentioned Balto I think another good choice would have been An American Tail: Fievel Goes West (might not have been the same as the Don Bluth's original, but still a very good movie). But these are your favorites and I still like most of the ones you've mentioned.
Spongeroks Posted 5 years 7 months ago
Prince of Egypt falls in C.
    thisguy81 Posted 5 years 7 months ago
Decent article, but Aladdin definitely didn't take place in ancient Egypt.
scrymusic Posted 5 years 7 months ago
OK... SOUTH PARK and TOY STORY are the top 2!! The Lion King should be #3. You failed to mention the Prince of Egypt. This movie was not Disney and yet it had advanced animation at the time that got them an academy award. This movie was visually stunning and I still own it. I personally prefer classic disney animation.

Decent list though!! and Great article.
taciturnwes Posted 5 years 7 months ago
Good list, Aladdin and The Lion King are two of my all time favorites, The Toy Story's are awesome too and I also liked A Goofy Movie. However I would've included Beauty and the Beast and Batman: Mask of the Phantasm, but still good list.
cowandchicken Posted 5 years 7 months ago
Wow! You really picked some good ones for this list! More than half of those are still my favorite movies to watch. The 90s sure had some great animated films.
Spongeroks Posted 5 years 7 months ago
I haven't seen the batman movie yet, so I can't comment.
kerfootb Posted 5 years 7 months ago
Sorry, I'm not a fan of nearly half the movies you listed. Besides, where's Batman: Mask of the Phantasm?
Knites Posted 5 years 7 months ago
The Goofy movie surprised me with how good it was. And, I loved Tarzan and Aladdin too.
dalmatianlover Posted 5 years 7 months ago
Oh, and also, I know this is your opinion, but if were to change this list, I would had re-arranged the order, and instead of "Rugrats" and "South Park", I would have put in "Beauty and the Beast" and "Duck Tales The Movie". But then again, most of the movies on your list are already Disney movies. It sucked that Don Bluth didn't make any real good movies in the 90's.
dalmatianlover Posted 5 years 7 months ago
Not a bad list, Spongerocks. I think you're talking like my main man. I saw a lot of these films theatrically. In honor of my buddy, TreyVore, I'm gonna give my thoughts on your selections:

    10. Pokemon: The First Movie(1999)

Did I see it theatrically?: Yes.

While Pokemon was the big thing, being a Pokemon fan at the time, I definately went to see it. It was an amazing experience. And you know what? To be honest, the Pokemon movies aren't as good as the show was.

    9. Balto(1995)

Did I see it theatrically?: No.

Eh, I didn't really see this one at all, so I can't truly comment.

    8. Tarzan(1999)

Did I see it theatrically?: Yes.

Being a fan of the Disney movies, I definately went to see it. I don't think it's one of the best Disney films to be honest.

    7. The Rugrats Movie(1998)

Did I see it theatrically?: No.

I used to like Rugrats until it started getting really popular. I saw the Rugrats movie just to check it out, and well, it's a lot different than the series.

    6. Aladdin(1992)

Did I see it theatrically?: Yes.

Believe it or not, I saw this one at a drive-in movie. It's not one of my Top 10 Disney movies, but it still holds its memorable moments.

    5. The Hunchback of Notre Dame(1996)

Did I see it theatrically?: Yes.

I agree that this is a great movie. The only reason the gargoyles are there is so it can be a kids movie. I didn't mind the gargoyles. I thought the movie was entirely great.

    4. A Goofy Movie(1995)

Did I see it theatrically?: Yes.

This is a fun movie. It's got lots of great jokes and awesome songs. A must see!

    3. South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut(1999)

Did I see it theatrically?: No.

Ugh. This movie is probably what got me to stop watching "South Park". I used to love the show, but this movie, IMO, was just horrible.

    2. The Lion King(1994)

Did I see it theatrically?: Yes.

What a movie! When I saw this movie, I was just blown away! I was never the same again after I saw the movie, and I will remember that theatrical experience as long as I live!

    1. Toy Story(1995) and Toy Story 2(1999)

Did I see it theatrically?: Yes. (both of them)

The first one was better, but the second one was a little corny.

    ---

Great list, Spongerocks. I understand you being a child of the 90's, and you have my support. Keep up the good work with those articles.
Spongeroks Posted 5 years 7 months ago
Ducktalesfan1977, I completely understand what you said.
    ducktalesfan1977 Posted 5 years 7 months ago
The only movies on here I saw was the South Park movie and Aladdin (although me and my group got kicked out of the theatre during the movie).

By the way, the reason why some people don't like your articles is probably because the stuff you write about probably isn't interesting to a person my age (30) and up. We all like different stuff. So there.
BloodMist Posted 5 years 7 months ago
All in all, i agree, mostly, with this article, especially what i consider to be Disney's last 3 truly great films, The Lion King(perhaps their best ever), Alladin, and Hunchback.Well except for Atlantis:The Lost Empire.I really liked A Goofy Movie, it was based of course on Goof Troop, part of The Disney Afternoon, and i really enjoyed it.And Toy Story 1 and 2?Well, let's just say, after those two movies, i have found NOTHING from Pixar i find even close to being watchable, nor any other CG animated film studio. They're all just so fuckin pedantic, though i haven't seen Ratatouille yet, the trailer was actually pretty good.
Spongeroks Posted 5 years 7 months ago
    Spottedfeather, this is my opinion.
Chronobrain Posted 5 years 7 months ago
South Park, while great, just doesn't belong somehow. But I guess it does qualify, since it's animated. Also, you seemed to forget a lot about the movies you listed. You should have gone to Wikipedia to read synopses first.
Astera Posted 5 years 7 months ago
You had a lot of my favorite movies on this list! I'm glad Toy Story was 1#, I love that movie. I remember seeing it in theaters twice when I was little (I think I was 4ish years old...). That was a big thing for me back then. I even saw the "Toy Story on Ice" thing... Pretty cheesy now that I really think about it. XD On another note, I was listening to "Stand Out" from Powerline when I was reading the article and then the pic of the AGM poster came up. :P Anyway, nice article.
candylover Posted 5 years 7 months ago
    tarzan is awesome!
ooliyo Posted 5 years 7 months ago
"Where Back! A Dinosaur Story", would have been part of my top ten list
Spottedfeather Posted 5 years 7 months ago
You seriously think Cars wasn't a bad movie ? Right. And I suppose that Spiderman and Fantastic Four were great movies, too....
cquinniey Posted 5 years 7 months ago
I like the article. I think Batman Mask of the Phantasm should have made this list but it your opinion.
RetroToon Posted 5 years 7 months ago
Pok'emon, Aladdin and Toy Story were my favorites. In the case of Pok'emon I had actually grown a small bit of appreciation for the films over the years because I knew some of them had been much darker and dealt with some powerful themes, and I think the stories had been better conceived over in Japan. But here 4Kids just dumbed them all down with their dubs and tried to make them as kid friendly as possible.

The Pikachu shorts I'll agree were obviously directed towards kids, but I always thought the movies had a little more than that.

Pokemon, South Park, Toy Story, and Pokemon 2000 *but came out in the year 1999 tecnically* are the best. of 90's
davidyck Posted 5 years 7 months ago
pretty good article. this is a lot better than your previous articles, so i think it deserves to stay on the front page, instead of being kicked off to the back page.

Have you done a top 10 90s cartoons list?

If not, that's okay. Some of these movies were good, but I definitely think the earlier half of the 90s were better. The later half exploded with CGI animation, anime, tweeny bop music, and the fear of Y2K. It just wasn't as memorable for me as the earlier half.

Sorry but I think you are missing something from the first pokemon movie. The plot makes no sense at all, the acting from Mewtwo is actually unconvincing, and the moral where fighting is wrong is actually pointless along with the "Brother my Brother" song. Even many fans didn't like this one.
    Score:
    10
