The pokemon fad experience

My experience of the short lived pokemon fad at school

The year of 1998. I remember it fondly. My first year of Middle School had started, and already Pok'emon had swept the nation. Two video games, a tv show, a line of toys, merchandise, and, a collectible card game. As it all began, kids everywhere had bought everything Pok'emon. It's popularity soon grew in only a few weeks. But not much happened in my neighborhood, at my school however, that's where everything happened.

Our school. Composed of classes inside the school and in trailers.

Popularity

After those few weeks of the series' popularity, kids from my school would bring their own Pok'emon stuff to school, but kept them secret from teachers, the faculty staff, the hall monitors, and even the janitors. From time to time When we had bathroom breaks, we would show what Pok'emon stuff we had. Some would bring their Gameboy and show everyone how many Pok'emon they had collected so far, that includes the card game too.

The Trading Card Game

So, with the tv show almost making its next season, everyone at school had a collection of the trading cards, just waiting to be either sold or traded, and they would win special cards by defeating another card game player. It took me some time to catch up on that, but I soon had a decent deck myself. My parents slowly gave me money to buy booster packs, and upon arriving back at school, kids I never talked to would come out of nowhere and would want to trade. Usually in the bathrooms since it was easier to prevent them from getting caught. I have about 80 cards in total at the moment, the ones I previously had were the rare, holographic ones.

I'm afraid I couldn't show you guys the full deck of my cards, mainly because my parents' digital camera is off limits to anything meaningless i add to the camera.

The first movie

With the show already ending in its first season, we would soon get to see the US version of the movie, soon to be in theatres around the states. The Burger King toys were selling like hotcakes, and the theatres were packed. Sadly, I never got to see it when it hit there, but my friends gave me info on the whole thing. The movie, while a little hard to understand at first, was about the story of mewtwo, and its hatred for humanity. Now, as an extra to the movie, a free limited edition Pok'emon card would be given out to any participants who saw the movie. Any kids who were younger than an 8 year old was uninterested in the movie and would just be in it for the cards. Some went to go see the movie again and again to get more of the cards.

Pokemon Red and Blue

Both games were a big thing back when they first came out, and for the price of $30 a pop. This is the part of the series that stood out at my school. I never bought the new color game boys when they were around, but still had the old fashioned gray one with green screen. When entering the bathrooms at my school, pok'emon trades were frequently offered whoever brought their games in. The only one I ever remember getting was a Pinsir.

The slow downfall of the card game

As 2000 was coming near, kids everywhere in school were soon getting tired of the card game. It was fun for awhile, but after the next couple of months they just stopped playing, but continued collecting cards. It wasn't just the fact that the game was challenging, but it seemed that whatever cards each kid had, they had an unbalanced deck compared to their opponents. And before they stopped playing however, the school board had made a new rule violating any card playing at lunch, which would happen from time to time. But even with the game playing at an end, kids still traded, so they would grab any cards they had in their pockets, and hand them over under the table, pretty easy.

So, what now?

With the series still going strong, the games are still being made, the tv show is still with us, and the card game, being ignored. So, even though we're not interested in the series as much as we used to, it's still interesting to see where it all started to us all. I still play the video games even if they haven't changed much, but it's still as much fun as it was collecting all those little monsters as it was back in the day. With thousands of fans, Pok'emon is still a great franchise to this day. This is the end of my article, and I'll see you all again soon.

it was banned from most schools because it presented a distraction. that was generally the only reason. I also heard some schools, none that I know specifically banned it because they thought it was evil or something.

Never got into Pokemon and glad I didn't to be honest. God bless.

well you missed out on some great video games

Pokemon is awesome. Great article! It brought back a lot of memories.
Benjanime Posted 4 years 6 months ago
i don't exactly know it's true meaning of why it was banned from schools, but one of the biggest probabilities was it's huge impact. everyone knew from day one that gameboys weren't allowed in schools so that's why the bathrooms were the best places to take them

I wish Pokemon would just die already.
Benjanime Posted 7 months 2 days ago
eh, back during that original message of yours i would've still been into it, but now i agree with you since there's too many of the creatures to count
    SgtPeppers1987 Posted 5 years 1 month ago
Great article! I was a hugh pokemon fan but eventually I just stopped playing. But pokemon definitely isn't dead. Diamond and Pearl sold a shit load of games this past year and they still make the card game (not for playing but for trading) Pokemon will be with us for a long time to come.

Umm, actually I was quite aware of the craziness that was the Pokemon back in the day. My point being is that most popular franchises or products tend to start off with such a high buzz. It either fades away to obscurity once the buzz dies down or it just quietly becomes apart of the landscape. Now Tommy and Jimmy up the street may have out grown Pokemon. That still doesn't explain the 2million or so people that purchased D&P. Kriss Kross was a fad. Tamogatchi was a fad. Pokemon is still going strong today.
Benjanime Posted 5 years 3 months ago
blah. it really WAS a fad, units. the franchise was a big hit back then. groups of kids would be found at certain stores or in malls buying the trading cards and merchandise. you must have really missed out on this if you don't think it was a fad
    Units1019 Posted 5 years 3 months ago
I think the term fad is a bit inaccurate. A fad implies that the product in questions fades into obscurity. I don't know folks, Diamond and Pearl being two of the top selling games last year says otherwise

I'm glad that I was too old by the time Pokemon came around. It always puzzled me that kids were peeing their pants to get their hands on a friggin' playing card, when as a child I would've been clamoring for the action figures. Then again, I suppose it's no better or worse than my baseball card collection.

I remember being in Toys R Us looking through the Star Wars collection when a couple of 8 or 9 year olds walked by holding packets of Pokemon or Yu-Gi-Oh or some such, and one asked the other why he liked them so much. The other said "I don't know, but my friends think they're cool."

As a Transformers fan, I have a bit of an axe to grind with Pokemon, because I am quite sure that they are the reason why Transformers had to start collecting Mini-Cons (gotta catch em all!) in order to power up. That, plus the incessant influx of manga-style animation, really drives this 70's/80's kid up the wall.

Nice article. I could never figure out the Pokemon fad. I remember my friends loved the game back then, I really didn't care for it. Was always more of a fan of stuff like Mario, Zelda and sports games.

It seems like Pokemon is still going strong though. Even today it's wildly popular, but mostly with people ages 5-10. I don't see many older gamers playing Pokemon anymore.

That was a great aritical and I was lucky enough to be in the pokemon fad back then ah good times
OsiaBender Posted 5 years 3 months ago
Mmmm, Pokemon... I had 6 plushes, 20 plastic toys, ~150 Trading Cards, a lot of caps... TCG-trainer CD for PC, cartridge with that strange hack for SegaGenesis... I baught Pokemon gum every day, had the notebook with pokemon-stickers, cause I couldn't find album for that...
    And I'm still pokefan yeah...
davidyck Posted 5 years 3 months ago
ahhhhh...pokemon, the first fad i ever really got into. i was 7 when pokemon came around, and boy was i into it. i had around 200 cards at one point. i wasent too fond of anything else pokemon related, becouse it seemed to much manga related and i was never too much into manga, but the card series was awesome as a kid. thanks for writing the article, bringing back good times.

I've finally gotten out of the Pokémon stuff myself, although I did stick with it a long time. I no longer feel excited for the newest games and I think the new Pokémon aren't very interesting anymore, plus all the trading cards I ever collected are lying around in the closet somewhere. I did watch "The Rise of Darkrai" on CN about a week ago and to be honest I think the anime has become more and more like the Japanese version since 4Kids left, but the fact that it's movie 10 is just more proof of how tiresome it feels. It can be hard to give up something you thought you liked but now that I'm older I'm starting to get out of cartoon "fads" and trying to watch more real cartoons.
Benjanime Posted 5 years 3 months ago
lol "pokemans". i probably should've added it to the article that parents got the term for pok'emon wrong XD
HarryReems Posted 5 years 3 months ago
    How many Pokemans are there?
    More than 50?
    RetroBen81 Posted 5 years 3 months ago
The reason for Pokemon's downfall in 2000 was because of a news headline about a pastor (name: Mark Juvera) "burning" some Pokemon-related material with a soldering iron. He then ripped up the Pikachu plush doll so "no one could take it from the trash."

Certain schools have banned the Pokemon franchise because of it being too distracting for some, or because younger students were bullying older students in unfair Pokemon card trades.

I never understood. Never liked it, and I’m glad it faded into obscurity. Why am I so bitter about this stupid anime? Cause in 1999, I was working at Toys R Us and every brat in the store wanted these retarded things. The cartoon was seizure educing, the games sucked, and the trading card game was just sin against mankind. When South Park made an episode that spoofed Pokemon, I laughed the hardest in years. I’m so glad that they knocked them down a peg. In addition, I blame Pokémon for the downfall of entertainment. Cause during this decade, all I’ve seen on TV is crappy anime knockoffs that mimic the show or its premise. Seriously, why was this fad so popular and how did anyone find it amusing? Now that I’m 27, I pity those that had to endure these atrocities. Cartoons died when Pokémon made its unwelcoming debut and created the cesspool of garbage we see on saturday mornings and cartoon network. A curse upon thee!

the pok'emon series was spawned by a guy with autism. maybe it was a great idea to him
Fandom Posted 5 years 3 months ago
I got swept in it as well. Regret buying those cards. Still trying get rid of them. I'm sticking strictly to sport cards
    knuclear200x Posted 5 years 3 months ago
Short-lived?! HA! ah what do i know i was in the philippines that time. there, that fad didnt end til i dunno...2002.
    mlw1984 Posted 5 years 3 months ago
My school never experienced the Pokemon fad since I was already in high school when Pokemon was really popular. I had played a few of the games myself, but never the cards.

But this is a good article though.
dalmatianlover Posted 5 years 3 months ago
That fad lasted for two years. Pokemon still lives with me to this very day. It may suck now, but the classic days of Pokemon were golden!
    the-micro-man Posted 5 years 3 months ago
I totally remember the PokeMon craze. In my area, it died down in early 2001. I collected the cards, saw the movie, played the GameBoy game, and it was awesome!
    Mondav87 Posted 5 years 3 months ago
I had my secret obession with Pokemon for some time 98-01,from 6th grade into jr high I didn't want to considered "dorky" or "chilidish" by my peers so I gave all my cards to my then 11yr old niece, she is too obessed! Have Pearl and Diamond and DVRs the show. My nephew at 7 has just gotten into the rush and need to get more and play I guess this is a cycle that will continue for some time!

gillz107: The picture was from Pokemon Red and Blue but the border that's around it was from when you play it through the transfer pak on Pokemon Stadium for N64.
TreyVore Posted 5 years 3 months ago
Actually it was Burger King. I worked there during the craze, it was worse than the Toy Story promotion.
Benjanime Posted 5 years 3 months ago
gillz, that was a picture i found from googling images of the classic pokemon game. i wanted to find the best one in the quickest time for my article
    gillz107 Posted 5 years 3 months ago
Benjanime, the pic of Charmander Vs. Squirtle, where did you find that from? I never played the original Red or Blue games, but were those pokemon cards on the sides of the screen, part of the game?
Anyway, yeah, who wasn't apart of the Pokemon craze? I use to collect as much as the McDonalds Pokemon plush dolls and toys as I could. I've got quite a collection collected of those promotional offers from micky D's.

I actually got into Pokemon when I was in high school. I taped an episode of the tv show and found that it was cool. Being a continuous story, I had to tape the next one and next one. Soon, I had to get the game. I got blue in 1998 for x-mas, then gold in 2000. Ruby, Leaf Green, and Emerald I bought during college. It may have cute characters, but it's one game that teaches a thing or two about strategy.
Benjanime Posted 5 years 3 months ago
    thanks for the comments guys!
    grifter78 Posted 5 years 3 months ago
I'm sorry to say, I got swept up in it too. My little brother really got into it and I used to make fun of him for it, but then he got me playing the Gameboy game, then the trading card game, then watching the cartoon, then playing the Nintendo 64 games. I wish I had a picture of his wall of Pokemon toys. It was fun, but it kind of became like Power Rangers or The Simpsons for me. It was great in the beginning but after a while it all became old.
mista jinx Posted 5 years 3 months ago
My 7 year old is huge into Pokemon so they are still a big deal. but in middle school? really?
Benjanime Posted 9 months 15 hours ago
i know it sounds funny, but like the article title states, it was a fad, and every kid my age got pulled in

    Is your information accurate?

Pokemon cards were still popular in 1999. Some other things look wrong too. I liked Pokemon and I still do.
