Flash animation on TV

An in depth look at why flash animation should have never made the jump on television.

It's been over a year since I wrote my last article, talking about my favorite video games of the past. Today, I'll be talking about the bad side of flash animation.

First, I'll start with a positive note.

The start of flash animation:

When flash animation was introduced to us back in the late 90s on the internet, it was fantastic. We could create animation like none before, and the 2D sprites looked very sharp. This was also a big improvement to pc games that used 2D sprites. No more were there blocky black outlines, or blocky coloring we would have to deal with. Animations looked like they'd come right out of a cartoon.

The process of animation being made from flash software.

Other flash uses:

Later on in the years, certain websites like Newgrounds and Joecartoon for example had their own fanmade shorts and games that used the flash software, and soon everyone would know about flash animation. In pc games, it was used in games such as the new Deer Hunter series and a cool looking fighting game called "Battlebeast", taking away the trend of blocky 2D sprites.

A look at the flash game, Battle Beast. Sadly, the game suffered from clunky control.

And now to get to the bad part.

Flash animation now:

It seems that flash isn't as entertaining as it once was. It's been the same for us for the last decade, but we still watch the videos online. Flash animation websites are still getting attention though, especially Homestarrunner, which is good. it's just that many of us would like to see something new, but that was something we shouldn't have even thought about, which I'll get to soon.

Traditional 2D animation and Flash animation: The technical difference:

Original animation: As you can see in the traditional animation, many frames are used, paintings are used for backgrounds, and the animation looks way smoother. We've had this kind of animation since Walt Disney was around.

An example of classic 2D animation. As shown, much color is used, and artwork looks very good.

Flash animation: Animation is created just by the simple use of computer software, and that's about it. You can also use a special Pen and Tablet to draw art. Not much work is done, and animation comes out choppy. Coloring work comes out pretty dull.

Happy Tree Friends, one of the few good (and funny) flash series online. It has offbeat humor with some graphic scenes.

Flash animation on television: Back in the year of 2002, flash animation had been kickstarted onto tv. A minor change to the animation had been shown, as characters would animate in a rubbery- like fashion. I thought it was a neat idea at first, but I began looking at how it changed normal animation, and it bugged me way too much. When Mucha Lucha got cancelled, the concept of flash animation being put into television was soon followed.

Mucha Lucha, one of the first tv flash shows ever made.

Flash on tv, my opinion: As of today, flash animation will probably take over the trend of old 2D animation. Cartoon network has a few of them on their channel, as Nicktoons has many, quite possibly the reason why the old cartoons have been taken off. Many shows really suck and will only appeal to kids that are ages 3 to 12.

Flash tv toons that I may have liked??:

Just one flash television series that I was interested in for a short while was Kappa Mikey, mainly because of it's concept. I'd always had a "what if" thought about that for a long time, but it's poorly executed in the show. Voice actors Michael Sinterklaas and Sean Schemmel (of Dragon Ball fame) play two dimwiitted characters. The main character, Mikey Simon, wins a trip to Japan to be in an anime.

Overall:

Flash was a great way to use animation, but it should have stayed as an online thing rather than to be used also on television. Flash animation has always found a liking on the internet since 1995, but seeing it on tv is about as exciting as cutting a loaf of bread.

And that's all for this article.

Next time: The short-lived Pokemon fad and how I experienced it at school.

Now there is something I can agree to. Kappa Mikey was freaking awesome. That was the most funniest cartoon I ever watched growing up. For one thing, it was actually funny. It's bad animation is what made it so awesome; just the way it was so random as though it were an anime even though it wasn't. Kappa Mikey is definitely something that should be rerun on Nicktoons again, because that show was definitely worthy of my time. To this day I still haven't seen the second season, though I heard that it wasn't as good as the first.

yeah it sucks that kappa mikey just silently got canned. i thought it had a lot of potential in bringing two things together. it was a whole lot better than that speed racer spin-off that the creator made, i'll tell you that

There's a good flash show called 6Teen where I live. It's about 3 teen girls and 3 teen boys who hang out together at their mall. While it's for all ages, they did have words like "crap" and "gay" and "orgy" in a few episodes. Check it up on Youtube, maybe you'll like it.

I agree with CheezNapkin on Home Movies. Sure the show did have Flash animation, but it was a good show, so I let that one slide.

Flash animation of the 2000's=limited animation of the 1960's/1970's
CheezNapkin Posted 5 years 2 months ago
The best flash animated cartoons are Home Movies and Foster's.

Home Movies pretty much proves you don't need good animation or a script to make a good show.
blueluigi Posted 5 years 3 months ago
I agree. Flash animation sucks on TV. it has the worst graphics ever made.
    Captain_marvelous Posted 5 years 5 months ago
I am going to college and studying animation as my major, I agree with gremini to a certain extent because no matter the software the is always limitations in what you can do in it, whereas a pencil and paper the possibilities are endless(as long as you know the extent of your talent and the budget but thats another thing).
Benjanime Posted 5 years 5 months ago
well true, you don't have to put very much effort into making flash, but original animation will always triumph over it. watching flash is fine as long as it's on the internet. but it just sucks watching it on television. the more work you put into animation, the better it looks. and you can't do much with flash
Gremini Posted 5 years 5 months ago
Also in response whoever said Flash is cheap an for beginners def. don't got a clue cause that is far from the case. Look at or work with the software more before you make a statement especially one that can be said is false.
Gremini Posted 5 years 5 months ago
This article def. should be void as if someone actually understood flash an went to school for animation would understand what flash is capable of especially today an animation it can turn out..it isn't the software it's the animator an the time spent with it will tell you the results you get. Traditional animation period isn't the same as it was unless you look at Disney when they come out with 2-D animation here an there. It's more of an effort an animators having the time or just not wanting to or different styles.

Whats this "Pucca"? I'm curious 'cause I've never heard of it.

Its a bit sad we've taken such a huge step back in animation. For ages TV shows were poorly animated and didn't look all that great. Then FINALLY TV shows have movie-like quality to them without being in theatres. And now its back to square one: good quality only in theatres. Only this time, instead of doing it because its a budget risk, its done because its "stylish". Yeah, really fake looking almost-but-not-enough-to really-fool-you anime characters drawn baddly...it looks greeeeeeat.
saintluticriss Posted 5 years 5 months ago
Oh yeah, don't get me wrong I hate it too. I was just surprised it was yet to be mentioned since it was so popular. It would be like talking about "monster" shows, including "PokeMon", "Monster Rancher", "Chaotic"{it's a brand new monster show my little brother is ADDICTED to} and then somehow forget to include "DigiMon".
RetroToon Posted 5 years 5 months ago
I can't stand Pucca either. If there was ever a cartoon these days with the laziest character designs, THAT would be it!
    knuclear200x Posted 5 years 5 months ago
Im not sure if flash animation is retro...its just cheap and for beginners IF not utilized to its full potential of course. 3D animation is whats used for granted these days, lately most shows that use 3D graphics and are on TV, are just the shows biggest asset since thats what the creators focus on more than the show itself.
Benjanime Posted 5 years 5 months ago
ugh i hate that show with a passion.... please don't mention it again....
saintluticriss Posted 5 years 5 months ago
Correct me if I'm wrong, but why didn't we mention that brainwashing/hypnotizing/subliminal-messaging Pucca show? Isn't that Flash animation? That is insanely popular here in Atlanta.
Benjanime Posted 5 years 5 months ago
yes sidran, i know, tv flash is alot different from normal flash, but it still sucks. i like metalocalypse and venture bros. just fine, but original 2D animation comes out a lot better. i just can't stand seeing rubbery movement to characters
    sidran32 Posted 5 years 5 months ago
This is a touch article. I like flash animation, yes. I don't like how cartoons are animated now, yes. But, these cartoons aren't flash animations. They may have a similar style but there is a difference. Flash animations are created using Macromedia Flash. Cartoons are animated using drawn frames, not with Macromedia Flash. Also, Flash animations are not retro. They came about in the late 90s to early 2000s. It simply hasn't been enough time to become retro.
    knuclear200x Posted 5 years 5 months ago
Flash animation doesnt belong on TV! UNLESS you count the Venture Bros, Aqua Teen Hunger Force, Metalocalypse...uh...any of the GOOD shows on adult swim...

and Crappa Mikey sucks yay now FLAME ME! no pls dont...
mrbumpy Posted 5 years 5 months ago
    Flash animation stinks!
MrMatt Posted 5 years 5 months ago
Don't forget Toon Disney's YIN YANG YO and Nickelodeon's EL TIGRE: THE ADVENTURES OF MANNY RIVERA. The last show I mentioned was created by the MUCHA LUCHA character designer, Jorge R. Guttierrez.
Benjanime Posted 5 years 5 months ago
ummm, because flash animation is retro....
    BATTLESTAR100 Posted 5 years 5 months ago
    how is this retro?
Funky Guy Posted 5 years 5 months ago
Home Movies made good use of Flash amimation. They used Flash animation starting in their second season up till the show's fourth and final season.
sonikku Posted 5 years 5 months ago
you forgot about the Cartoon Network show
    Hi Hi Puffy AmiYumi.

they used Flash animation to make that too!
TheLady Posted 5 years 5 months ago
Flash is a great thing on the internet, but that doesn't mean it works on television. At least, not if it's all there is and the shows created with flash generally are weak in plot. Flash is great for starting artists to gain experience and for shorts that otherwise wouldn't come into existence, but it shouldn't be the standard. I admit that some people, like Adam Phillips, prove that flash cartoons can be way bigger than what they currently are, but such dedicated, talented people are hard to find. But I think people like him is what television(flash) needs today.
    blueryan913 Posted 5 years 5 months ago
Don't forget Spanky Hamm from the Comedy Central series "Drawn Together"
ooliyo Posted 5 years 5 months ago
    Don't forget Hammerman.

    That nearly defined it!
RetroToon Posted 5 years 5 months ago
I agree with you on the whole Flash animation issue. In my own article I was talking about Joe Murray and how Camp Lazlo looks on Flash compared to the excellent animation he had on Rocko's Modern Life. However I would say that some Flash cartoons are better than others. Fairly Oddparents for example, even though it's on computers, seems to move very nicely but shows like Mucha Lucha always look mechanical to me. Flash just seems like something that's meant for internet cartoons and not for television, I mean you can't tell me that they're not able to use cels anymore!
    Score:
    6
