The Decline of Family Guy

See how Family Guy went from funny to awful in just 5 seasons.

I'm here to talk about an adult show that premiered on January 31, 1999 and originally ended on February 14, 2002, only to be brought back on May 1, 2005. This show is entering its 6th season and has many similarities to the Simpsons, and that show is Family Guy.

The first 3 seasons of Family Guy were hilarious and brilliant, I laugh everytime I watch them, when it originally ended in 2002, I think it shoud have stayed like that, because I thought that when it came back, it stopped being funny. They used more cutaway jokes, not enough plot, and they made some characters more annoying.

Here are the 5 characters who changed the most:

First, lets talk about Meg. Meg was an annoying character since the first episode, but now she's gotten worse. She became more bossy, naggy and feminine, like Lisa Simpson, but I like Lisa and she's only 8, but Meg is 17, she should know better. According to many sorces, Meg is the most hated character on Family Guy, and I can see why(rhyme not inteded).

Second, there's Lois. Lois was an alright character back then, but now, she's a jackass. She turned into a stereo-typical bossy house wife, like Marge Simpson. All she does is yell and has sex with Peter now, which gets very irritating. Lois has ever since became one of the most annoying characters on the show.

Third, we have Peter. The thing on what they did to Peter is similar to what they did to Homer Simpson: they made him dumber and turned him into a total jackass. According to Wikipedia, Peter hates most of his family, especially Meg, and his abuse has gotten more common in later seasons, and thats not very funny anymore. He's still my favorite character though.

Fourth, we've got Chris. Chris has become extremely stupid past the years, I don't really need to comment on him, he doesn't feel needed anymore.

Last but not least, we have Stewie. In the first 3 seasons, Stewie's "bad boy" level ranked up with Bart Simpson and Eric Cartman, but now, he's just gay. Sure, he still tries to kill Lois, but not as much as before. Probably the last time Stewie was "cruel and evil" would be this scene taken from the season 4 episode "Patriot Games":
This was quite possibly the last time he was evil and not gay.

Now lets talk about the show's increased use of cutaway jokes, it feels like they now use cutaway jokes every 30 seconds. One time I was watching an episode of the 4th season on Adult Swim, I literally felt like there was no plot whatsoever and was just cutaway jokes.

The show's use of cutaway jokes was mocked on the 2 part South Park episode "Cartoon Wars", where Cartman calls Family Guy "just one random interchangeable joke after another."

But I'm not saying every new episode was crappy, I enjoyed "North by North Quahog" and "Meet the Quagmires" (both pictured above) a lot, and some cutaway jokes like "Ding Fries are Done" and "It's Peanut Butter Jelly Time" were very good, although many of them weren't very funny.

In closing, Family Guy has gone way downhill after season 3, if you want to watch the new episodes, go ahead, but they're not as good. Family Guy is starting thier 6th season and if the episodes don't blow me away like the old ones I AM Done! Compare Family Guy to The Simpsons, the 1st and 2nd seasons of Family Guy are much better than the 1st and 2nd seasons of The Simpsons, the 3rd seasons for both shows are the same amount of good, and the 4th and 5th seasons of The Simpsons are much better than the 4th and 5th seasons of Family Guy, although both shows are good.

I DON'T CARE WHAT ANYONE ELSE SAYS! I AGREE WITH YOU! (I also think the rediculously offensive jokes they've resorted to are completely uncalled for)

My favorite part on Family Guy is where Neil Goldman has a crush on Meg Griffin, but Meg is not interested because I had a classmate named Neil who decided to get on my nerves for no reason when I was in 5th grade. I harassed him back and I wrote him a couple of love notes. I got busted for it and my mom found about it from my teacher.

I disagree with this article. Family Guy is still as good as it always was.

    You're soooooo right!

Possibly the only charcter that hasn't really changed is Brian and Peter's friends. One thing that pissed me is that they took Loretta away. She didn't nearly get enough screen time as she should've.

family guy is a awesome show but i agree that the new family guy seasons are just plain awful, all they do is talk and theres not enough action. but other than that its still a great show.

I'm relatively new to FG, just discovered it a couple of years ago, and it remains my favorite TV show. About the only one I watch with any regularity. Most shows have their peaks and valleys, and the Star Wars episode aside, the two later episodes just don't have the sparkle of the earlier episodes. I think they really hit a groove in the third season, and even most of Season 4 was quite good. Now it's hit and miss. And I really hate what they've done with Stewie; his character was much more interesting when they just had him on the fence as far his sexuality was concerned. Now it appears he's crossed the line. Of course, with Family Guy continuity is non-existent and this might be just a phase.

I'll continue to tune in of course, and I have no problems with the cutaways, they're what hooked me into the show. I can't tell you what a weird feeling of nostaglia overtook me when they did the "Great Space Coaster" gag last year. I had totally forgotten about that show, I mean totally, and I have a pretty good memory about stuff like that.

A good article, and some good points. But I too remain a Family Guy fan.

I just saw the Star Wars episode, and it was the best fG episode ever.

Family Guy is good. BTW, like the last picture of homer and peter.

I agree. I wish Family Guy hadn't come back. The show has gotten worse and worse since 2005. The show is nothing more than junk jokes like "Remember the time I got a handjob from Mr. Clean while playing checkers with ArchDuke Franz Ferdinand?"

What are you talking about? "Family Guy" has always been funny! I always like watching new episodes, because they always give me new jokes to laugh at! I don't think it changed that much, though. You were very passionate in your article, but still, I'm gonna have to give you a thumbs down.

Never liked this show, thought it was just mindless potty humor. I was mad when they brought this crap back. Futurama is much better and I'm glad they brought that back.
avaitor Posted 5 years 9 months ago
I basically agree; Family Guy's first four(I personally liked S4) were great, but now, not so much, and this doesn't belong on RetroJunk just yet.
taciturnwes Posted 5 years 9 months ago
Family Guy's a little too modern for Retrojunk, and you act as if the cutaways weren't already a major part of the show before its return, the frequency of them is irrelavent. But speaking of the cutaways you could probably write a much better article just talking about the nostagia within those moments of Family Guy.
    snkreed99 Posted 5 years 9 months ago
P.S I also do agree that this is not retro.
    snkreed99 Posted 5 years 9 months ago
I know that it is probbably pointless to even respond here since this article is on the back pages, but I agree with the writer of this article. The Family Guy was a really funny show until it was broght back from cancellation. The jokes are not as good, and they are very offensive at times. I am not overly religious, but even i find some of the religious humor offensive, also the way southerners have been depicted, like in the episode where they went to live in Texas, just hidious. I guess I stil watch hoping that it will get funny again.

    In regards to VERNO:

Many people are posting exactly what you said,"...but this isnt retro."

I have a feeling, now this is PURE sarcasm, that in at least ten years, Family Guy and all the other things that aren't deemable as retro, will be.

    :)

Blasphemy!! Pure blasphemy! I love this show! Decent article, but I totally disagree with you about the later seasons. The writing on the show never was particularly splendid, but it doesn't matter. This show relies on sight gags and shock value; and the newer episodes are becoming more and more controversial. In regards to Stewie, he's great no matter what you say. I think we all knew he was gay before even he did, but so what? He's the kind of character you either accept or rebuke. Period. Three cheers for Family Guy!
    ducktalesfan1977 Posted 5 years 9 months ago
The first 3 seasons were pretty good but I don't care for the newer episodes.
    musicradio77 Posted 5 years 9 months ago
Never saw that show, it had some funny spoofs from different shows. Can't wait to see it when it comes on WPIX-TV (CW-11) starting Monday.
    Score:
    -16
