The Retro Machine (Vol. 1)

In this edition, the hallowed machine spits out the Technodrome, Hit Stix, and more!

The Retro Machine is going to be a collection of old stuff that resonates with me personally. It might be stuff I had as a kid or stuff my friends had when we were kids. It might be stuff my parents had as kids that happened to get passed down to me. Regardless, it should be interesting, because as much as the many items I have lined up pertain to me, I'm almost certain that some of them will also make you go "oh, I remember that!"

Technodrome

For the first entry, I wanted to do something big. That's why I chose one of the biggest toys of the late 80's/early 90's. The Technodrome!

The Technodrome was the main lair of Shredder and The Foot from the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles series. This was quite a toy to marvel at as I remember it. The thing was fairly larger than the average toy. My friends Jeff and Chris owned this one and we would often stage epic action figure battles using the Technodrome as the centerpiece. We'd stage these battles on a bridge over a stream and almost every one of those epic battles ended with the Technodrome plunging over the edge of the bridge and exploding into a thousand pieces in the stream. This was followed by us rushing down to quickly catch the pieces before they got totally swept away.

Proton Packs

Bustin' has always made me feel good. But it never made me feel quite as good as when I had an actual Proton Pack to carry around with me, complete with Ghost Trap.

Ghostbusters pretty much rules.

Inchworm

My entire generation has a sore butt as a result of growing up riding this guy. I think everyone I knew had one, which was strange because I remember them being absolutely no fun at all and had a huge tendency to tip over. The little antennas that you were supposed to grab onto were far too close to you to be able to brace yourself at all. Nonetheless, I remember it well.

M.U.S.C.L.E.
And oh man, remember M.U.S.C.L.E.?

I had pretty much everything you see pictured here. The Championship belt was awesome, I reused that when my friends and I had sports competitions or whenever I wanted to pretend to be a professional wrestler. That wrestling ring was kind of a lame cheap piece. You ended up just banging the wrestlers together until one of them fell out of their little holder. And how cool is that trash can thing? It was just a trash can full of random M.U.S.C.L.E. characters, who wouldn't like that? Those things were so collectible because they were tiny, you could fit'em in your pocket.

Fisher Price Medical Kit

If anyone from my generation ever played doctor, chances are you did it with this kit. These things you see right here are quite famous in my mind, I used them all the time. As years went by, pieces of the kit became scattered amongst my other toys. One thing is for sure though, that stethoscope really worked and that alone made this set awesome. I remember my mom using this kit on me when I was little to show me how doctors give shots. I have a distinct negative association with the syringe and orange bottle seen here, they truly give me the heebie jeebies because I remember finally getting real shots and they hurt.

Hit Stix

Hit Stix was made up of a mini-amp and two connected "drum sticks". The idea here was that you could drum with the sticks on any surface and a simulated (extremely fuzzy) drum sound would come out of the speakers. We thought we were pretty hot stuff with these.

Bigfoot Board Game

Here we have the Bigfoot board game. Now, I never really learned how to play this one, but the fact that it came with four monster trucks was really all I cared about. Mostly what I did with this was lay the board out and roll the trucks around on it. From what I remember, playing the actual game was unnecessarily difficult and boring.

Corky

The 80's were all about talking dolls with tape decks hidden in their backs and Corky was the cadillac of that kind of toy. When many others had Teddy Ruxpin, I was lucky enough to have Corky. My sister had Corky's female version, Cricket, so for the short time that the both of us were young enough to appreciate this kind of thing, we had talking dolls that helped us imagine race car adventures and other things. As I got older of course, Corky just sat in a corner of my room, eyes always open, just staring foward. I swear to this day that I awoke in the middle of the night and heard the pitter patter of little plastic shoes go across my floor and Corky's shadow appearing to run across the ceiling. Oh my God, that was the end of Corky. To this day, he's still sitting somewhere in my parents basement, in his little "Corky" chair. Just sitting. Still staring forward. I should've saved this for Halloween.

Well folks, that about does it for the First Edition of "The Retro Machine". Until next time...

Thank you Super Retro Geek! I have such great memories of playing with those GB toys.
    super_retro_geek Posted 1 year 4 months ago
Okay, so I just finished reading your latest TRM article, and decided to check out some of the early ones. I, too, owned the GB proton pack and ghost trap. They were a couple of my favorite toys to play with. I remember that the "foot trigger" (that's what I'm calling it) was made of a soft rubber, and the yellow "electrical cable" connecting that to the trap itself was a long, hollow piece of rubber tubing. And when you stepped on (or squeezed with your hands) the trigger hard enough, you'd send air through the tube that would blow the trap doors open. Friggin' loved that!

OMG! I Loved the FP Medical kit... I wore that thing out until I couldn't play with it anymore. Kinda still wish I had it!

I did not know there was a Bigfoot Board Games.
Hoju Koolander Posted 4 years 6 months ago
I would literally dream of having the proton pack and especially the trap. Instead I had that light projection ghost zapper thing. It was ok, but the proton pack would have been rad.
Dutch Posted 5 years 25 days ago
    Awesome!

I had one of those Proton Packs.
We lived in a flat, so we had this large subterranean vault where everyone who lived there, stalled their bikes. That’s where this “Ghostbuster” catched his ghosts.

    Ahhhh, the memories.

Holyshit dude. I totally forgot about Corky, I never owned one but a good friend of mine did. I use to love that little dude, until I saw Chucky. Then it was game over, I always threw him in my friends closet when I was there. The little bastard would always look me in the eyes has I chucked him in there to. His eyes were always open...Creepy

I think alomost everyone had that Fisher Price medical kit. My brother had a version that came in its own Dr.'s bag instead of a box. It is still amazing to me that the stethoscope actually works! What a great toy! I remember the commercial for the hitstix was like a lame rap of sorts.
scamrock Posted 5 years 6 months ago
I had the M.U.S.C.L.E. championship belt and the trash can of figures. We used to use the belt when we pretended to be WWF wrestlers.

I had the Bigfoot boardgame. My buddy had the Hitstix. And I think I had a friend who had the proton pack as well.

I used to ride on my friend's Inchworm until we moved. I don't recall ever getting a sore butt though. I don't recall Corky, but I do remember his Sister Cricket. Some of my friends from school used to bring her to show and tell.

I remember having the Med Kit and being freaked that large shot thing.

I still have a couple of M.U.S.C.L.E characters in my stuff. ;)
Fangarius Posted 5 years 7 months ago
Oh, man, do I remember the Inchworm, I rode that thing for years until it finally gave out. XD

Now I recall the Proton Pack, but I remember the foam gun and Ghost Trap.

I think all my cousins had the Fischer-Price Med Kit, which was scary in itself. But then again who didn't have Fischer-Price stuff? My best memory was when my Grandma got me the Sesame Street playset complete with the original Muppet characters and Oscar's Trash can.

pokinsmot Posted 5 years 8 months ago
OH YEAH! i didnt have the Corky thing, never even heard about it... but i had a Fifel doll that did the same thing... although, it tended to burn up the tapes most of the time... i can still smell the smell of melting tape... kinda liked it to honest, just didnt like the fact that he was eating my tapes... hahaha i remember alays sticking my finger in his mouth as he talked, like he was chewing on me...
pokinsmot Posted 5 years 8 months ago
    Technodrome

WOW! i dont think my friend had this one! looks pretty B. A. though!

    Proton Packs

hahaha one of my friends had these. my favorite piece was the Ghost Trap...

    M.U.S.C.L.E.

my friend across the street had a HUGE collection of these things... i was so jealous... i think i mightve even stolen a couple! XD every once in awhile i come across some on ebay... im seriously contemplating buying some...

    Fisher Price Medical Kit

hahaha i had every piece of this except for the case and the vile! i loved the stethoscope and the heart rate taker thingy...

    Hit Stix

hahaha i remember these things! so cheesey!
secretvixen Posted 5 years 9 months ago
I used to have the medical kit. Or was it my cousin? Anywho, we had fun beating each other up then curing each other heh.
chokeslam Posted 5 years 11 months ago
MUSCLES ruled!!!! One of my friends and I were totally in to them and between the two of us we must have had like 1000 of the things. As I remember, however, we kind of missed the point; they never had a single wrestling match. Instead gave each and every one of them a name, divided them into teams of good and evil and just used them like any other action figure engaging them in all kinds of epic battles.
Spencer Posted 5 years 11 months ago
Ah yeah Mad-Mike, I remember that trumpet case thing!
    Mad-Mike Posted 5 years 11 months ago
The scary part is I remember every last one of these, even if more than half were from TV....

I had a friend with the Hit Stix, those were actually kinda cool, and I started to get pretty good at drumming with them after awhile. They were sort of cheesy made though.

Inchworm reminds me of the old Toys 'R' Us commercials, I swear that toy made a cameo in just about every last one of those commercials in the 80's, I remember seeing those as far back as age three (1985-86ish), all the way through 1991ish.

The doctor kit...man how I remember that. The stethoscope was cool though, I could actually listen to my own pulse with the thing. I wished I had kept it, it would be useful in diagnosing buzzes and rattles in guitars. I also had a trumpet-case like thing by Fisher Price, that you could assemble your own horns and flute-o-phones out of the parts inside.
    Pearl725 Posted 5 years 11 months ago
I had the doctor kit, this girl my mom baby sat made me scared of the syringe because she'd stab me in the arm with it and it felt like a real needle.

My cousin's had an inch worm I was always jealous that they never let me ride it.

I had Cricket, still do in fact. My mom brought her back to haunt me. Her eyes were all sunken in and her skin has taken on an eerie blotchy tone. Still scares the crap out of me with those evil eyes.

Love your articles so much nostalgia in them for me.
oldnickfan Posted 5 years 11 months ago
I had the doctor kit! It was passed down from by cousin (he was born in the 70s) and me and my sister loved it!Oh and on youtube theres a film called"The Fall of Cricket"...she seems to have had the same fate as her male friend.
MommaToAnAngel Posted 5 years 11 months ago
great job! I don't remember corky, that would have given me nightmares for sure. but my older brother had the technodrome. he NEVER let me play with it. guess he thought I would break it. I had the dr. kit for sure. my cabbage dolls were sick all the time! can't wait until your next installment!
LegoMovieMan Posted 5 years 11 months ago
Hit Stix. Drumsticks -- and an amplifier, too. But you don't need drums to make these sounds.

    It's true.
CanadianWeirdAlFan Posted 5 years 11 months ago
I still have my Inchworm! LOL

I may give it to my cousin for her kids..
pbot Posted 5 years 11 months ago
Dude, I can't believe that you remembered the medical kit! I got that for Christmas when I was like 4!!
    ducktalesfan1977 Posted 5 years 11 months ago
It was great being a kid in the 80s.
gdawg Posted 5 years 11 months ago
Nice article! I never got the Techno-Drome though. I had to choose between that and Castle Greyskull and the car that came with Castle Greyskull got me. I had just about everything else listed though. I didn't realize the inchworms were actually popular.
    pancho420 Posted 5 years 11 months ago

Holy Inchworm, Batman! Crud, wish I had that instead of my bigwheel...not! And muscle men, I was cleaning the attic a few months ago and discovered a secret stash of them. Oh, the memories. And I had forgotten all about the medical kit. Yup, I remember it well. Used to play battlefield medic with it.
Skerlnik Posted 5 years 11 months ago
Inchworm. Holy crap, that's awesome. Forgot all about that. Hated that thing, and yep, the little antennae tended to press against uncomfortable parts.
