Disney's 1 Saturday Morning

Take a look at this memorable moment of Saturday Morning Cartoon History.

To start things off, I am indeed a child of the 90's. It was probably the best decade of my life. Now, how should we begin this article? Ah, yes...

Saturday morning. It's the beginning of the weekend, the kids are off of school, and it's time to spend the whole morning kicking back, relaxing and watching some cartoons! It was mostly the network television stations that did this, but other stations did it too. During the 90's, ABC has always been my favorite station when it came to Saturday morning cartoons.

The early 90's offered some entertaining shows like "Darkwing Duck", "Little Rosie", and "The Bugs Bunny & Tweety Show". Later on came cool shows like "Sonic the Hedgehog", "Reboot" and "Bump in the Night". I also remember the claymation commercial bumpers that they played. They showed either a trio of singers, a dog and a fire hydrant, or a country singer, and they'd always sing, "After these messages...we'll be right back." Man, I haven't seen those bumpers for years, and I was psyched when I found them on YouTube.

It was in either 1995 or 1996 when Disney bought the rights to ABC, and that's when things started to change.

As the summer of 1997 was coming to a close, I started hearing about a new name for ABC's saturday morning block. It was called "Disney's 1 Saturday Morning". Oh, how I remember it so much. The commercials announced that it was going to premeire on September 6, 1997. I was getting really excited. I actually remember staying awake in bed all night the night before. I couldn't sleep because I was just too excited!

Unfortunately, there was a last minute change of plans. Just a few days prior to that date, Princess Diana was killed in a car crash. ABC was forced to devote it's time that Saturday morning to instead do coverage on the tragedy. Therefore, Disney's 1 Saturday Morning didn't premeire until the next Saturday morning. I remember waking up and turning on the TV and getting all pissed off because it wasn't on, but when I found out that Princess Diana had died, I broke into tears. It was one of the most tragic days of my life! But Elton John cheered me up when he performed his remake of "Candle in the Wind".

Disney's 1 Saturday Morning had a very memorable opening, which can be viewed here on Retrojunk. It was really the first season of the block's run that was the most memorable to me. I remember the slogans saying stuff like, "Five hours of summer once a week", and "You only get ONE Saturday morning!" I also remember after each intro to each show, they'd always say, "Illuminating Television". It was, indeed, illuminating, let me tell you!

Now that I'm done with my little introduction, let's talk about the shows that were on it. There were a total of 8 shows when it debuted. There were 4 oldies and 4 brand new ones.

Let's start with "The New Adventures of Winnie the Pooh". This was actually a show made in the late 80's and early 90's. Basically, they were showing reruns of it. As annoying as Pooh may be (well, maybe to some), this show was actually a pretty good show for it's time. Since Pooh is a lovable Disney character, and this show has played on ABC a lot, it would be appropriate to have this show in the lineup. Besides, I like the theme song pretty well. (The 80's were the best decade for TV themes.) What may also be of some interest is that the guy who voiced Tigger in this series was the original voice of Tigger! That's right; Paul Winchell.

Now, here's one of the newer shows in the lineup: "Pepper Ann". I can't really say much about this show. It's basically about some 12-year-old girl who just shows off at everything she does. This girl is so annoying! Why does she have to be annoying? Why is she hogging spotlight all the time? Why does she talk to her reflection? Why is her little sister a hermaphrodite? And why does she disguise herself every time she walks into a comic book store? Is there anything I like about this show? Well, I find it interesting the fact that at the end of the show's intro, she finds something under her desk at school, and it's different in every episode. That caught my interest the most. Well, all I can say is that if you watch this show, you'll probably find something about it that you like.

Out of all the new shows, probably the most popular one was "Recess". I'm sure it was, since it got it's own movie, plus it ran for quite a few seasons. This was an okay show. It's basically about these six fourth-grade kids trying to survive school and do their best to have fun. I guess this show could be captivating for elementry school kids. I was in junior high when this show debuted, and in junior high, there is no such thing as recess, so that's probably why it didn't click with me. It does have it's comical moments, so it was an appropriate addition to the block.

The show on Disney's 1 Saturday Morning that made the least sense was "Science Court". I mean, what kind of a name is that? "Science Court" sounds like it's the name of a court show of some kind. And you know what? That's exactly what it is, a court show that focuses on scientific principles. Court shows aren't fun! Court shows are boring! This is a Saturday morning cartoon! Are they trying to entertain kids or make them feel like they're in school? What were they thinking? Well, I think Disney was aware of this later on, and when the second season of the show started up, they changed the name of the show to "Squigglevision". Seriously? "Squigglevision?" That sounds like the name of a cliche show they'd play on "Playhouse Disney". Well, not that that's a bad thing, but still, I don't think I know a single person who watched this particular show. Why? Because it sucked! "Home Movies" pissed all over this show. And yes, this was made by the same creator of "Home Movies". Go figure.

Of course, what Saturday morning lineup on ABC would be complete without "The Bugs Bunny and Tweety Show"? This show, I believe, had the longest run of any Saturday morning cartoon on ABC (14 years). It's basically a 1-hour block of the classic Looney Tunes cartoons. Those cartoons define the word "classic". Today, I can't even find them anywere. I mean, where did they all go? I'm not interested in those stupid new cartoons on Nickelodeon or Cartoon Network! I want to see classics!

"Jungle Cubs". Okay, I havent' gotten a chance to watch this one very often, because it didn't always play every Saturday morning. This is another one of those baby-form shows like "Muppet Babies" and "Baby Looney Tunes". This one, however, has baby versions of the animal characters from "The Jungle Book": Balloo, Baghera, Kaa, King Louie and Colonel Hearthy. If you love "The Jungle Book", then this show's right up your alley.

Oh, man. I was hoping I'd never come to this show. "Doug" was originally property of Nickelodeon. I can't believe Disney bought the rights to this show. Hey, Disney can do anything! Disney rules the world! When this show started under Disney, it was called "Brand Spanking New Doug", but now it's called "Disney's Doug". Well, Disney did turn this show into a disaster after they bought it from Nickelodeon, but that didn't stop me from loving the company. Disney still remains my champion.

As you can see, looking back on these shows today, none of them can really amuse anyone over the age of 10.

The only real memorable show on Disney's 1 Saturday Morning was "101 Dalmatians", which is arguably the best Disney animated series of all time. (Yes, I know, that's just my opinion.) This is a show that I seriously think deserved more respect than it received.

Now some of you are wondering how they can make a five-hour block out of just eight shows. Well, one of them was an hour long, and there were also some shorts that played in the block, which included "Mrs. Munger's Class", "Great Minds Think for Themselves", "Manny the Uncanny", "The Monkey Boys", and of course, "School House Rock".

That pretty much does it for the first season. The second season is where it started going downhill. They added some other shorts like "You Rock", where kids got to submit videos of themselves singing and the people of Radio Disney would put rock music around them. That was pretty epic. They also added Jelly Roll, the elephant, and he was pretty cool, especially since Brad Garrett did his voice. They also added the new shows, "Hercules" and "Mickey Mouse Works". I was afraid a lot of my favorite shows would get taken off of the lineup, but I was surprised that most of the originals stayed in the lineup (including "101 Dalmatians").

Disney's 1 Saturday Morning only had a 5 season run. I'm actually kinda glad they stopped it early before it got really worse, which it would have, believe me. The block was renamed ABC Kids in 2002. When the 2000's started, Saturday mornings weren't as entertaining as they were in the 90's. Besides, I wasn't a kid anymore, so now, to me, Saturday mornings are more for sleeping in!

So anyway, I just wanted to share with you all my experience with the first two seasons of Disney's 1 Saturday Morning. It did have it's ups and downs, but it still remains a memorable moment of my life. I wish there were many others there to share the experience with me. Those of you who are a bit confused about some of the flaws I mentioned, you should know that I pretty much appreciate anything made by my champion, Disney! So give a nice round of applause to the company's founder, Walt; we couldn't have had stuff like this had it not been for him!

One Saturday Morning was something I looked fwd to every Saturday. Recess and PepperAnn were some of my all-time favs. Do you guys remember when they had that Tales From The Crypt gameshow? Didn't last that long. Doug was always a Nickelodeon show for me. I watched it for a lil while after Disney got their grubby hands on it, but it did go to krap after that. :(

I agree, Looney Tunes is like the legendary cartoon! Doug was awesome too!
    MarioSonic94 Posted 3 years 10 months ago
hey grindcore fan: I'm hoping that you didn't include "The Bugs Bunny and Tweety Show" as the shows that you think sucked. If you did, you are possibly one of the only people on earth who hate Looney Tunes.
grindcore fan Posted 4 years 6 months ago
Disney's Doug sucked compared to the original.

All of the shows on here sucked in fact. Saturday morning cartoons started going to shit around this time.

Well Forget It! I found out that Disney's One Saturday Morning is not going to return to ABC. So cry all you want and beg to ABC all you want but they are not going to have 1SM return to ABC. Sorry!
    Scooby8980 Posted 4 years 11 months ago
Wikipedia has annouced the return of OSM on 6/21/08 with two new game shows, WOF jr(new kiddie wheel) and Classroom Feud (kiddie family feud)
    mlw1984 Posted 5 years 5 months ago
I did like ABC's earlier line up though with Sonic the Hedgehog, Darkwing Duck and Bump in the Night. Now that's Saturday Morning TV.
    mlw1984 Posted 5 years 5 months ago
This came at a time when I stopped watching Saturday Morning cartoons. None of the shows minus Winnie the Pooh and Bugs Bunny appealed to me. It was just mostly kids in school junk anyways (never saw Jungle Cubs). School was out for the weekend and I didn't want to think about school, especially on a Saturday.

In my opinion, Saturday Morning cartoons went downhill in the mid-late 1990's.

How many of us were also peeved that Summer in 1998 when ABC pe-empted One Saturday Morning to give coverage about the boy from Puerto Rico? I was only in First Grade then and didn't know about the concept of immigration/illeagal immigration and I thought "Why is there news on if this is Saturday?" But I was kind of suspicious when there were no commercials. I am kind of spotty on the story though. Could someone give me some information on it in another comments?

    Love this article!!!!
glasseye Posted 5 years 8 months ago
One positive thing I should add is how ABC at least held on to Bugs Bunny and Winnie the Pooh. Now kids don't even have that. Where is Bugs Bunny? He was impossible to miss 15-20 years ago, now he's impossible to find.
glasseye Posted 5 years 8 months ago
One Saturday Morning was just another death knell in the grand old Saturday Morning Cartoon tradition alongside NBC's abandoning of their cartoon line-up, network news shows and the growth of Nickelodeon, Fox Kids etc. They tried, but ABC just couldn't revive or even come close to their Saturday Morning greatness of 6-7 years earlier at the most recent.
Kinda sad that this is what what Saturday Mornings meant for kids of the mid 1990s until the present, but that's the little 'price' you pay for growing up in a time of vast animated offerings over 100s of channels. You can't have both, and really there would be no point to.

Quack Attack was on Disney Channel and Toon Disney, but never ABC.
    moviefan06 Posted 5 years 11 months ago
Wasnt Quack Attack on there too that cool carttoon.
NostalgicNed Posted 5 years 11 months ago
my favorite block on network tv. I was in kindergarten when it started and the show Recess portrayed the kindergarteners as savages, which I thought was so unfair!
    the-micro-man Posted 5 years 11 months ago
I remember watching this block often.
    StarSprinkles84 Posted 5 years 11 months ago
As much as I love Disney, I just didn't care for their 1 Saturday Morning. I think there was a better line up of shows on Nickelodeon watching Nicktoons in the morning than on local networks. Whenever I did watch it, it was Pepper Ann, Recess, and sometimes Doug just to see how crappy it was and made me want the original Doug.

    Great article! :)
ToxicAvenger Posted 5 years 11 months ago
I agree with most things, but the "101 Dalmatians"-series had the worst animations ever. A very, very bad show.
dabattousai Posted 5 years 11 months ago
Recess, Pepper Ann, Jungle Cubs and Winnie the Pooh were awesome back in the day. 101 Dalmations was alright.
Caps 2.0 Posted 5 years 11 months ago
This line-up started when I entered high school. I was starting to fade out of Saturday morning television at this point in time. I was watching VH1 and TBS more often, so I didn't see many of these shows until they either got to syndication or started airing on Toon Disney.

My favorite shows ended up being "Recess" and "Pepper Ann". Both of them were very well-written and the latter featured voice-over work by the always wonderful Kathleen Wilhoite.
Zyoura Posted 5 years 11 months ago
Geez, this takes me back. I used to love watching all of those Saturday morning cartoon's. Darkwing Duck, Doug, PepperAnn and all of the shows were awesome!
    Good job.
    Mondav87 Posted 5 years 11 months ago
Pepper Ann was my hero! From 4th to 8th grade.
Science Court was the best(Yes, I'm a bit of a geek),it was always the last show on at 12.
I like the Manny shorts, one show I think he went to the taxidermist...???
Of course any show with an elephant is cool in my book.
Nashida Posted 5 years 11 months ago
You left out the little "Find Out WHY!" shorts with Timon and Pumbaa, unless those came later.

Science Court was awful...they even made lesson plans for schools with it so I had to deal with it 6 days a week instead of 1.
Rainbow Bright Posted 5 years 11 months ago
cool article well done, i loved all of the abc cartoons on One Saturday Morning.
Astera Posted 5 years 11 months ago
I never watched 1 Saturday morning that much, I usually tuned in to Nick... I loved Mickey Mouse Works and Recess though! Oh and about that Science Court show. I have this extremely brief memory of watching a scene then changing the channel because it wasn't interesting. :P
davidyck Posted 5 years 11 months ago
i remember watching science court all the time when i was a kid. i dont know why i ever liked it though
TheCurator Posted 5 years 11 months ago
One Saturday Morning came about when I was trying hard to be a "grown up." I stopped watching cartoons for the most part, but I do remember some of these shows.

Classic Looney Toons are just that -- classic. Watching them shows you a window into what influenced most of what came after Bugs Bunny & Friends.

ReBoot was great because it was the first CGI cartoon I can remember, and it had a good dramatic storyline.

Schoolhouse Rock is as entertaining as it is educational, and I weep for today's youth, because they can't see Conjunction Junction or Lolly, Lolly, Lolly, Get Your Adverbs Here.

Generally, I think the networks screwed up Saturday mornings when they decided we absolutely needed Today, Good Morning America and The Early Show seven days a week. It leaves nothing to spur kids' imaginations, and not every cartoon on TV needs to be educational to be inspiring.

P.S.: A little off-topic, but does anyone else think Elton John copped out when he added new lyrics to "Candle in the Wind" for Princess Di? It diminished the meaning for the song's original subject, Marilyn Monroe. It didn't honor Diana enough; what, EJ couldn't have come up with an original song for the deceased darling of Britain?
    Mavrick_45 Posted 5 years 11 months ago
    SCIENCE COURT!

I completely forgot this show existed!
I remember loving though (^_^) yay!
RetroGAL Posted 5 years 11 months ago
Nice artical I loved Pepper Ann but I hated Disney's Doug that show was a dissaster the Nick version was awesome.
verno Posted 5 years 11 months ago
recess jungle cubs doug pepper ann i loved these shows
BagOfMagicFood Posted 5 years 11 months ago
I hate how they had to get rid of Mrs. Munger's class because the people they used in the photos couldn't take a joke.

Oh, and I actually liked Science Court and Pepper Ann. Or I think I liked Pepper Ann. I don't remember it very well now.
dalmatianlover Posted 5 years 11 months ago
I'm just telling you all that I remember from it. You see, I stopped watching it in 1999. I admit, I was kind of bouncing all over the place in my article.
bamfingnightcrawler Posted 5 years 11 months ago
I agree with LordBlue. You never stated everything that went on with One Saturday Morning. You never said anything about the female host of One Saturday Morning or the huge clubhouse.
LordBlueRouge Posted 5 years 11 months ago
I dunno, this article rubbed me the wrong way, It's good, but you could've went into how shortly after Disney bought Doug, and it paved the way for shows like Pepper Anne, Recess, The Weekenders, Llyold in space, (Nightmare Ned?) but cartoons that generally revolved around the idea of the trials and tribulations of growing up as a kid

The reason why I'm disappointed with this article is because, besides the regular cartoons like winnie the pooh and 101 dalamians, this is what most of Disney's 1 saturday morning consisted of.

    Their slogan was "illuminating television"

And even now we see how this style of writing for cartoons have been carried onto more recent shows like Kim Possible, Jake Long, Filmore, and the Emperors New School. Where the protagonist has to deal with some inner conflict, only for it to be resolved by some sort of advice from their peers or elders.

and it's a very drastic change from saturday cartoons in the early 90s like Chip n' Dale Rescue Rangers, TalesSpin, Aladdin and the little Mermaid.

Hercules was the exception because they decided to make the show based around the years of hercules growing up, the years he attended highschool.

Other then that, I hate to be blunt but it just seems be another "My favorite Saturday morning cartoon line-up" article.

Having said all this I know you can do a better job on this article
    Luna2 Posted 5 years 11 months ago
very well done. unlike some people i love pooh bear i still watch the early movie .if they can be called a movie. something about it makes me feel all warm and fuzzy probbley because it hasnt become a bastardized shells of them self. like loonatics did with all of the WB characters
serana Posted 5 years 11 months ago
I only liked the Pooh Bear cartoon. That theme songs has been stuck in my head for years. It has become my wake-up song of choice.
    ducktalesfan1977 Posted 5 years 11 months ago
I only watched The Bugs and Tweety Show and every once in a while, Pooh. I couldn't get into the other shows since they wasn't my thing.

Once Hammerman, Pro-Stars and Wish Kid came on, I lost faith in Saturday Morning cartoons.
avaitor Posted 5 years 11 months ago
Good one, I liked 1SM then, and for my $.2:

Winnie The Pooh: Liked as a kid, but he annoys me now.

Pepper-Ann: Such a grand show, I miss it.

Recess: It was a smart show, glad it's still on Toon Disney.

Science Court: Home Movies does wipe this off the floor, no doubt. I hoped I could of forgot this forever.

Bugs & Tweety: If you don't like the classic Looney Tunes, then you have no heart.

Jungle Cubs: From what I saw, it was decent.

Doug: I thought it was on par to the orignal Nick eps.

101 Dalmations: Meh, it was average.
Terebithia Posted 5 years 11 months ago
You did an excellent job on this article very well in depth. made me all misty-eyed with rememberance.
And yes I remember being slightly pissed off too when it got delayed, until I found out why, and then later that day (or was it the next day) my mum took me to the memorial service they had for Princess Di in Wash. D.C.

and OH MY GOSH! I thought I was the only who though PepperAnn's little sis was strange beyond all reason, like why did this little girl sound like a cartoon version of Barry White in drag!?!?!?
    SilverViper01 Posted 5 years 11 months ago
Hi, I enjoyed your article! I miss most of this stuff, too. Especially Looney Tunes, that was like the best part of my day. By the way, if you have Turner Classic Movies there's this show called "Cartoon Alley" that comes on 11:30 am Saturdays, so they're not totally obsolete. Probably up until '97 or '98 was when Saturdays started to suck for me...oh well. Anyway, like I said, cool article!
    Score:
