10 Toys I Always Wanted

There were a lot of toys that I wanted as a child but I could never have.

I must say the 1980s were a fantastic time to be a little kid. The toys were great and the cartoon selection was just superb. But there were times that I asked my mother for toys that she just couldn't afford to buy for me. The following is a list of 10 toys that I always wanted but she could never afford to buy for me.

10. The Centurions

Okay I think I need to start with the most obvious of the toys The Centurions Action Figures. I used to love to watch this show on TV and needless to say I would always go past a display of these toys at the store and ask my mother for them. However, when she looked at the price tag on the box she would tell me "no!" My mom is lucky that I didn't throw a 2 year old tantrum in the middle of the store because that wouldn't have worked in getting what it was I wanted but I do remember giving my mom an 11 year old attitude all the way home.

Ace McCloud was but one of the toys from the Centurions cartoon show

9. Strawberry Shortcake

Yes this is the doll that every little girl wanted back then. They were the thing to get Christmas of 1982 and stores could barely keep them in stock. My mother brought me a Sour Grapes doll that year and Strawberry Shortcake Figurines to stuff in my stocking. Needless to say I don't really like the newer Strawberry Shortcake dolls as much as I like the ones from the 1980s but maybe that's just the old fart in me talking.

Strawberry Shortcake dolls from the 1980s. I suppose everything old is new again.

8. Jem Rocking Roadster

Having been 9 years old when Jem first came out the one thing that I always wanted for my Jem dolls was the Rocking Roadster. You could put your Jem dolls in the Rocking Roadster. One thing that was unique about this toy is that you could hook up the Jem Rock Back Stager, a pair of speakers that convert into a dressing room, and play actual music on it.

The Jem Rocking Roadster was unique in that you could actually hook up the Rock Back Stager Speakers to the back of it and play actual music.

7. Glo-Worm

Glo Worm was a toy that I wanted. Not because it was the thing to have but I wanted because it had a face that glowed in the dark. This is what I would have gone to bed with when I was 6. Even though it was made for a 2 year old I still would have wanted it.

Glo Worm is a toy that was made for a 2 year old but it was something that I always wanted as a 6 year old.

6. Inhumanoids

Yes even I wanted Inhumanoids. Being a girl growing up at the time I didn't care if it was "boy toy" if it had bad guys as good as this I wanted it. Metlar, Tendril, and D'compose were about the coolest things to come out of my time. Who wouldn't want a toy that looked as ugly as that?

Tendril is but an example of a "boy toy" that I wanted when I was 10.

5. Bravestarr

How funny it was to want a toy like this but somehow Bravestarr became my most favourite, and difficult to find, toy of all. I think that the good Marshall Bravestarr was on everyone's want list including my younger brother. It was one of those things that you either liked or you didn't like and I loved the show almost as much as I loved the toys.

Bravestarr toys were among the best and most difficult to find of 1980s toys. At least in my neck of the woods they were difficult to find.

4. G.I. Joe

This is the one toy of all the 1980s that my mom would never let me have. My brother wanted them even more than I did but every time we'd go past a whole display of G.I. Joe action figures back in the store back in the day my brother would pick one up show it to my mother and she'd say "no! Put that back."

G.I. Joes: The one thing that I was never allowed to have when I was 9.

3. Robotix

These were building sets that you put together yourself and were automated by remote control. I loved the Robotix cartoon and I always wanted the toys.

Robotix. What can I say about this toy building set that hasn't been said already?

2. Gobots

I did have some of these when I was a kid but it mostly went to my brother and I resented him for this ever since. Gobots were similar to Transformes and that's where the similarities end.

Gobots were things that I wish I had kept. I had hoped for Gobots Classics toys to come out but maybe that's asking the toy makers for too much.

1. Transformers

The whole universe of the Transformers was something that I wanted for quite some time, since I was 7, and I didn't start collecting them until I was 21. I don't know why I was so afraid to ask for them? Maybe it could have been because I was afraid that my mother would think that for a girl to like Transformers is silly. I'm not sure why I was like that.

Transformers. The one thing that I always wanted as a child but was afraid to ask for. I suppose it was my way of thinking at the time but now that I think about it harder I think it was silly of me to think the way that I was thinking

Celeste Posted 4 years 8 months ago
And I'm very well aware that the era of "girl" toys and "boy" toys are over but most girls would be just as afraid to tell their parents that they like the "boy" toys as the boys are afraid to tell their parents that they like the "girl" toys.

Hoju my mother never knew that I wanted the "boy" toys because I never told her that I wanted them and that's only because I was a bit afraid of what other girls at the time would think of me.
I was rather tomboyish and I would play with my brother's toys, truth be told I liked my brother's toys a lot more than I liked my toys because I thought his toys were a lot cooler than mine.

Oh, the unfairness of the gender lines of the 80's! You missed out on owning great toys just because you were a girl, bummer. Bravestarr was awesome though! If you liked this article, check out mine that looks at it from the "Boy's" perspective titled "That's Girl's Stuff".

Well, actually I'm a girl not a guy, but thank you for the compliment just the same. :)

I so agree with what you said about parents not being able to "afford" to buy us toys. But yeah, the 80's was a great decade for toys and cartoons. Your list rocks! The Centurions were rad and so were The Inhumanoids. These were toys you can play with outside in the sand box and battle with your other friends with. Awesome! I would put M.A.S.K, He-Man and Thundercats there too! Is it weird for a guy to like Jem toys????
    Out.

I cried because I broke a transformer from my classmate and was afraid to tell him a the moment.

He told in class the next morning and everybody knew.
My mum bought a new for him.
    I was sooo embaresed.

I had a fabric body gloworm!
Celeste Posted 6 years 2 months ago
I remember the first Transformer my brother ever got was Bumblebee and I remember breaking the foot off of his toy. Let's just say after that my brother wouldn't let me play with his toys again.

I always wanted Transformers. My cousin had them and I almost stole them from him.
Celeste Posted 6 years 2 months ago
I still have my Hugg-A-Bunch doll, my Papa Smurf, 2 Wrinkles hand puppets, my My Child doll and my Pound Puppy Yuppie and my Pound Puppies Furries.
I never have departed with those toys.
    yearof79 Posted 6 years 2 months ago
I Still have my HE-MAN with the "cap" back pack....you wind his arm back and the caps explode when he punches, I love it!!!
Celeste Posted 6 years 2 months ago
I had a chintzy alternative, a pink corvette, that ended up, after a few times of rolling the car around the school yard kiddie pool, decapitating my Kimber doll. Gosh I was really upset after that. My mother glued Kimber's head back on with epoxy but it wasn't the same.
VibraEssentia Posted 6 years 2 months ago
You are sooooooooooooooooo right about the Jem's Rockin' Roadster! I don't have it either. I also need to get Kimber and Raya to complete my collection. Those are the only two Jem dolls I never had. I still have my glo-worm and that plastic one. I want them to bring back big Rainbow Brite dolls so I can get Patty O'Green, Buddy Blue, Shy Violet and a big version of Indigo.

The G.I. Joe USS Flagg playset hands down my most wanted toy as a kid and to this day
warriorman Posted 6 years 2 months ago
I loved collecting the Super Mario toys, even to this day I still have the Racoon Mario with the spring and suction cup on the bottom that makes it jump, I have the Luigi jumper as well, and the last one that has still survived after all these years is the Goomba with the small suction cup under his chin that also jumps when it is realeased. LOVE EM

ooliyo Posted 6 years 2 months ago
damn fairweather, as I scrolled down the list I was thinknig Construcs and about to ask that same thing.

I looked at Transformers, I had one Transformer growing up and Castle Greyskull. That was it!
My best friend had everything else, and I mean everything, including Construcs. They were from Fisher-price, and if I remember, on the box, fisher price did not use their original logo.
    fairweather1125 Posted 6 years 2 months ago
Nobody ever mentions the toys Constructs. They were sorta like a cross between legos and erector sets. They were fuckin awesome.
EightiesCrazy Posted 6 years 2 months ago
He Man should be on the list, so should Voltron, the Thundercats, Star Wars action figures and those Meco superheroes with the badly sewn removable costumes.
HarryReems Posted 6 years 2 months ago
Yeah, the toys rocked dammits in the 80's. Most of mine got floated down the river or blown up with firecrackers, but I still have quite a few of my Joes. I definitely had 2 Centurions, all the Inhumanoid good guys, Bravestarr and tex Hex, a billion GI Joes, and a few Gobots and Transformers. King Kong toy nerd, right here!

The 80s was a great time to be a kid.
