My Thoughts on the Nicktoons

This is my Nicktoons article (inspired by many others).

Seeing that there were a lot of articles on here about Nickelodeon's Nicktoons and how much people miss the originals but hate the new ones, I thought I'd make my own Nicktoons article. I have some similar and different thoughts on each series. I'll attempt to talk about each one at the best of my knowledge.

It all started in 1991 when Nickelodeon launched it's Nicktoons lineup. It started out with the three originals, "Doug", "Rugrats" and "Ren & Stimpy". Let's start with "Doug":

The guy on the left is Doug, not the guy on the right! I think "Doug" was a perfectly okay show, but I think it's weird how much it compared to our regular life. It was canceled in 1993, and it continued to play on Nickelodeon for the remainder of the 90's. However, Disney picked it up in 1996, and everything went downhill from there. Thanks to Disney, the show got more popular, but shows that exceed in popularity have always annoyed me...especially when I'm not a hardcore fan of them!

"Rugrats" used to be a good show. When "Rugrats" was active in the early 90's, it used to be funny, and I liked to watch it every once in a while. However, in 1996, two years after it's cancelation, it somehow gained peak popularity, and Nickelodeon brought the show back into production in 1997. From that point on, the show just kept sucking harder and harder, especially since new characters like Dil and Kimmy were added to the cast (whom were introduced in the many Rugrats movies that came out). I don't think the show has even ended its production yet since then. I mean, this show ran almost as long as "The Simpsons"! It's just getting ridiculous!

"Ren & Stimpy" was the third original Nicktoon. I remember this show...well, actually, I don't, because I never really sat and watched it. My mom never let me or my brother watch this show, because she thought it was too inappropriate. It does contain a lot of sick humor, and it's one of Nick's very few Nicktoons that got a "TV-Y7" rating (the rest were "TV-Y").

"Rocko's Modern Life" was the first new Nicktoon, which debuted in 1993. Out of all the Nicktoons, this one had one of the coolest theme songs, but they screwed it up in the second season when they changed it! A majority of the stuff on this show is just plain weird. This is another show my mom would never let me watch because it contained some sick humor.

Finally, a Nicktoon that I can watch! In 1994, "Aaahh! Real Monsters" was introduced. This show did have some gross stuff, but it didn't have the same toilet humor that "Ren & Stimpy" and "Rocko" had. "Aaahh! Real Monsters" happens to be one of my favorite Nicktoons of all time. It's really entertaining; the jokes are great, and you gotta love the main characters.

We had to wait 2 years until another new Nicktoon was made. I guess either the viewers didn't have enough of the monsters, or Nickelodeon was working on something incredible. What we got was this. It was 1996 when "Hey Arnold!" was brought into Nick's lineup. This is not one of my favorites, but I seriously believe that this show was very VERY overrated. I guess this was probably Nick's new-generation "Doug".

Another Nicktoon was released about the same time as "Hey Arnold!" This one was called, "Kablam!" This was one of Nick's most unique Nicktoons, since it contained a variety of different forms of animation. During it's production time, I was easily entertained by this show. I wish Nick didn't cancel it; they could have kept it running just a little longer.

In April of 1997 came "The Angry Beavers", one of the funniest shows that Nick has ever made! It's strange how fast they've been making new shows at this time. I guess it was to make up for that hiatus in between 1994 and 1996.

In March of 1998, Nickelodeon announced that it's next Nicktoon, "CatDog" was going to air the upcoming fall and showed the pilot episode. I found the pilot to this show to be rather interesting. I was thinking, "Oh, cool, can't wait for this show to air."

When September of 1998 came, "CatDog" unfortunately didn't premeire. Instead what we got was a completely different show, "The Wild Thornberries", a Nicktoon that nobody really appreciated, and yet another overrated show of Nickelodeon's. We also got a variety show entitled, "Oh Yeah! Cartoons!", which was very short-lived.

"CatDog" eventually did air in October of that same year. A lot of people hate "CatDog" and claim that it was the start of Nickelodeon's downfall. I strongly disagree. It was actually a pretty good show. I have a way of learning to accept cartoons, and you can plainly see by looking at my "Top 10 Cartoons of My Life" article.

Shortly after "CatDog's" release came "The Brothers Flub", a Nicktoon that failed miserably. Not having seen any episodes, I'm not going to go into further detail.

In May of 1999, Nick released it's phenominal Nicktoon (dare I say it?), "SpongeBob Squarepants"! This annoying sponge I hate dearly, mainly because he's the most popular cartoon in the world, and he's like...EVERYWHERE! This show's even more popular than "Rugrats" ever was! I've hated this show ever since it began it's gigantic popularity in late 2000 or early 2001.

Later that year came a show called "Rocket Power". I wasn't a fan of this show, but I watched it whenever it was on, and it was okay.

Then later came two more Nicktoons. One of which was "The Fairly Odd Parents". It's an entertaining show to watch, but it's so annoyingly popular, and it's almost as popular as Spongebob! The other one was "Invader Zim", which is probably the last GOOD Nicktoon ever made. Today, "The Fairly Odd Parents" is still on the air, but "Invader Zim" has been cancelled due to the fact that it was too frightening for small children.

As of 2002, I honestly lost track of the Nicktoons. I pretty much stopped watching Nickelodeon mainly because it just wasn't good anymore. Well, I think I'm all done doing my rants about what I thought of the Nicktoons. I just wish I can have Nicktoons TV, so I can watch "Monsters", "Rocko", "Angry Beavers" and "Invader Zim" more. Thanks for listening, and good night.

"Doug" - Great show. Skeeter was my favorite character. It was a bit boring sometimes, but it was very entertaining, and it had it's funny moments. 8/10

"Rugrats" - Started out kind of boring, by season two it got a lot better, when Dil was born it went downhill, when Kimi came along the show was killed. 7/10

"The Ren & Stimpy Show" - Classic! My favorite Nicktoon. Excellent voice acting, great animation, and hilarious characters and dialouge made it one of the top 5 greatest cartoons of all time. And unlike most cartoons with crude humor, Ren & Stimpy was absolutely hilarious. Plus if you can't stand gross jokes, there was lots of satirical humor, and some adult innuendo to make up for it. 10/10

"Rocko's Modern Life" - Another classic. My second favorite next to Ren & Stimpy. Filburtis probably the funniest character, but they were all good. The craziness, and adult innuendo made it hilarious. One of the best cartoons of all time. 10/10

"Aaahh!!! Real Monsters" - Haven't seen it in years, but I remember it being good. Even though I also remember it being disgusting, and not in the funny way. But I love Ickis. Don't completely remember it, but I'll say somewhere between 6 and 9. So I geuss 7.5/10

"Kablam!" - Not really a favorite of mine, but I like it. Action Leage, and Sniz & Fondue are my favorite skits. However I found Henry and June to be very irritating. 6/10

"Hey Arnold!" - Hated it when it came out, but I grew to love it. Now it's one of my favorite Nicktoons. Grandpa Phil was my favorite character. 9.5/10

"The Angry Beavers" - HILARIOUS! One of my all-time favorites. Dag's my favorite character, but Norb was good too. My favorite next to Rocko and Ren & Stimpy. 10/10

"CatDog" - I love the theme song. Winslow was pretty entertaining, and I loved the episode where they thought the world was ending. However some episodes were quite boring, and sometimes the jokes felt a little dry. 6.5/10

"The Wild Thornberrys" - Like Real Monsters, I haven't seen it in years. But I remember it being very boring. 4.5/10 (I geuss?)

    "Oh Yeah! Cartoons" - I don't think I ever watched it. ?/10

"SpongeBob SquarePants" - Love it. The best Nicktoon since Rocko's Modern Life. However, I that only goes for seasons 1-3. It would be a 10/10, but due to the newer episodes being as stupid as they are, two points are taken away, 8/10

"Rocket Power" - Loved it when I was little, but I recently watched it again on Nicktoons, and I now hate it. 3.5/10

"The Brothers Flub" - Aired on Nickelodeon, but it wasn't a Nicktoon. That and I never watched it. ?/10

"The Fairly OddParents" - Not a big fan, but I liked it. But the newer episodes are crap. It would be a 7, but due to Poof existing. 5.5/10

"Invader ZIM" - Disgusting, dark, disturbing, depressing, but hilarious. I love GIR, and ZIM can be funny too. However, I am not a fan of the square-shaped character designs, and it's way too depressing for me to call it one of my favorites. But overall it's pretty good. 6.5/10

Decent article. But I think you should've talked more about Rocko, and Ren & Stimpy. I know you said you weren't allowed to watch them, but your a man now! You should give them an other chance. I still gave it thumbs up though.
    Marcus2 Posted 2 years 9 months ago
Wild Thornberrys is fucked up! What's wrong with you people?! The animation and storyline is terrible! I used to like it when I was too immature. And most of those who still like it are deluded idiots. And by the way, there is absolutely no hope for Nick after the logo changed! Cartoon Network became evil when it yanked all of its classic programming off its network and stashed it into Boomerang, a worthless invention. And since there's virtually no old juice to replenish the new cartoons, no wonder there's no hope for Nick now!

    Doug: LOVED it!
Rugrats: I really loved this show. When Dil made the scene, it was okay, but when Kimi came along, it sucked.
Ren and Stimpy: Pretty funny! Honestly, Spumco's version was better than Nick's (when the creator was fired). Didn't like APC. Although I watched a lot of classic Nick, I wasn't allowed to watch it till I was 6.
Rocko's Modern Life: I really love this show, and they got away with A LOT!
AAAAHHHH!!! Real Monsters!!: I absolutely loved this show. I have a few episodes taped of Nicktoons.
Hey Arnold!: It had some of the best music, and great storylines.
KaBlam!: MY FAVORITE!!!!!!!! I've watched this my entire life, and I have a few episodes downloaded and taped. My fave was June cuz she reminded me of myself and she was also cute.
Angry beavers: Another great show! I have "Beaver Feaver" on my iPod.
CatDog: I remembered when it premiered, I was obsessed.
The Wild Thornberries: Good. Not my absolute fave, but still good.
Rocket Power: It also wasn't on my top 10 list, but it was really enjoyable.
    Brothers Flub: Never saw it.
SpongeBob SquarePants: I liked it until season four. He's getting really annoying now.
The Fairly OddParents: Loved it, but then Poof came along, and I stoped watching it.
Invader ZIM: I love this show. I even have a pair of GIR shoes I wear all the time.
Chalkzone through The Penguins of Madagascar: I only liked Action League Now! the series, My Life as a Teenage Robot, Danny Phantom, and The Mighty B!. The rest sucked.
Non-splat shows (name due to new logo): AWFUL (so far).
TurtleMonster Posted 3 years 9 months ago
Doug: Honestly, I thought that show was boring as hell. Nothing ever caught my eye or made me chuckle during it.

Rugrats: One of my favorite shows of all time! I don't know why, but watching babies wondering around the house or park is VERY entertaining to me! But my favorite characters in the show have to be Stu Pickles and Drew Pickles. I like Drew especially because not only is he sexy, but he is also the gayest man in the Universe!

Ren and Stimpy: Good show. The gross-out humor really made it great. Although the very short lived "Adult Party show was shit. And I'm pretty sure the majority of people agree with me on that.

Rocko's Modern Life: Great show! Even though the main character Rocko is pretty un-interesting like Doug at some points, it still has some humor that really gets to me.

Aaahh! Real Monsters: I'm sorry, but I'm not interested in watching more episodes of this show at all. It just doesn't appeal to me.

Hey Arnold: Another one of my favorite shows! You're right, Arnold does seem like a newer version of Doug. But that doesn't make it a bad show! At least he does something unlike Doug.

Kablam through Brothers Flub: Never got into those shows, sorry to all the fans.

Spongebob: The only reason you hate Spongebob is because it's not "Nostalgic" or "Retro" as I should put it, not because it's popular.

Wasn't Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles as popular as Spongebob at one point? I don't see you whining about how popular that was.

But I must admit, I hate the new seasons of Spongebob. The first three and the movie were much better, but I have seen improvement the past few episodes that aired.

Rocket Power: This was one of the gayest shows I have every seen in my entire life! And I don't mean that in the good way.

The Fairly Odd Parents: The Oh Yeah cartoons and the first few seasons were good, but when "baby poof" made it in to the scene, I lost interest in to it.

Invader ZIM: Once again, another one of my favorite shows of all time! Too bad it was the last good nicktoon to ever come out.

    Doug- loved it.
Rugrats- loved it until Kimmy came.
Ren and Stimpy- hated it. Too gross.
    Rocko- loved it.
Aaahh! Real Monsters- enjoyed it, but not really a favorite.
    Hey Arnold- ABSOLUTELY loved it.
Kablam- enjoyed it, but again not a diehard fan
Angry Beavers- loved it with every fiber in my body.
Wild Thornberrys- enjoyed it. Too bad it doesn't get a lot of appreciation.
    CatDog- loved it.
Brothers Flub- Ugh, never got into it.
SpongeBob- originally a diehard fan, but now I'm getting sick of him
    Rocket Power- enjoyed
Fairly OddParents- will watch it here and there
Invader Zim- Never got into it. It was too creepy for my liking.

The new Nicktoons don't necessarily suck. They're just made for a new generation of kids who are into different things. They don't appeal to me, so I just don't watch them. Avatar: The Last Airbender was pretty fucking amazing if you ask me.

youre right-Zim was one of the Best!!!!!!!!!!!!
    futuramafan95 Posted 5 years 1 month ago
    danny phantom was pretty entertaning
Frightwolf Posted 5 years 5 months ago
Rugrats was still pretty funny once it came back in 96 - 97. But the episodes began to go downhill once Dil entered the picture.

Spongebob is absolutely hilarious -- probably the best example of a great contemporary Nicktoon. If only the overly fast-paced nature of the newer episodes would go away, though... the show hasn't been turning out good episodes recently.
nintendonerd Posted 5 years 7 months ago
New rugrats stink but Ren and Stimpy ´Rocko and Kablam rule!
    Marcus2 Posted 5 years 10 months ago
Dalmatianlover, I agree with you on something. New Rugrats and Wild Thornberrys STINK.
Kisenianblossom Posted 5 years 10 months ago
Good luck with that, I have Nicktoons TV channel and they cancelled Invader Zim too... or they moved it into the 3-4am slot... I wish they would make the rest of the episodes and sell it all in a box set with a sort of 'the forbidden episodes' gimmick. Hell yeah, I'd buy that entire box set if they ever were able to make those episodes that were already named and story-boarded.

The other three still play occasionally. Rocko has a solid time I think... but the other two just kind of come-on whenever they need a filler or something.
Chaosangel Posted 5 years 10 months ago
Great Article! I agree with you about most of these shows. You're right, Invader Zim was probably the last good nicktoon made, (so sad that it got canceled..it was among the few nicktoons that were enjoyable to watch before the Nick net work stopped being good.
Spongeroks Posted 5 years 10 months ago
I disagree with you on Spongebob, but I agree with you on Catdog, I always found that show underrated, so you get a thumbs up.
    l4nkid22 Posted 5 years 11 months ago
i totally agree with you, this article was great, but ya spongebob has to go!! i heard that nick was making a new network show for cable that has all the original shows from the 90s on it and i mean all the originals, pete and pete, salute my shorts, etc. so it should be good. but i want to get the dvd box sets myself. down with paramount for not releasing pete n pete vol. 3!!!
AnimatedBritney Posted 6 years 7 days ago
Oh, and "sidbonkostein" I used to like As Told by Ginger, too. I feel for you. But the show didn't get enough attention from it's viewers really as much as all the other ones..
AnimatedBritney Posted 6 years 7 days ago
I MISS NICKELDEON CARTOONS SOOOOO MUCH!!! Heck, I make videos for the old shows! Especially Hey Arnold..My favs are: Hey Arnold, Wild Thorn Berries, CAt Dog, Rugrats, Angry Beavers, Doug, Roko's Modern Life, and Real Monsters. I agree that Spongebob is WAY overated and might I say GAY. Besides, the show is very political, And Fairly Odd Parents is okay, but overated too much..Sadly, I never saw Invader Zim, since my extended cable got cut off...grr

    SPONGEBOB IS A GOOD SHOW!
Hiro Posted 6 years 2 months ago
Not all new cartoons are bad. Ever heard of Avatar the Last Airbender? Now that's a modern cartoon without the fart and booger jokes that most of the other current Nickelodeon shows have. It has complex characters, unique plots, awesome animation and I can go on and on. It's the only good original Nickelodeon cartoon.

By the way, the first "gross-out" cartoon came on in 1991. It's called Ren and Stimpy. When I was in medical school, I thought that, Eek the Cat and the likes was "retarded". Don't get me wrong, the 1990s have good cartoons, but gross cartoons, no matter what decade they come from don't appeal to me.
uhaulball Posted 6 years 2 months ago
everything beyond catdog was a POS. spongebob being the biggest one. these new cartoons they show nowadays are completely retarded. its so sad. i will be showing my kids the cream of the crop of all the oldies but goodies when they grow up. cant risk having their minds corrupted with spongebob and other new crap

I never really liked any of Nickelodeon's original animated series either. I used to watch Nickelodeon from 1979-1990 and it had a variety of shows from all over the world. After 1990, they went commerical.
dalmatianlover Posted 6 years 2 months ago
Something else I forgot to mention in this article (see if you agree with this): Spongebob Squarepants is the Winnie the Pooh of Nickelodeon!
    missk123187 Posted 6 years 2 months ago
i used to watch all the cartoons but except probaly the odd parents and indvader zim and the angry beavers but i love doug and rocko even thought it still comes on llike 3am where im at and klabam i usetd to love that show and aww real monsters love hey arnold that show was crazy but really kewl like the jazz melow beat to the show and i like thats even thought he has a football head and also that helga loved him but i guess he just freaked out about it but if u seen the movie u know wat im talk in about
sundrop Posted 6 years 2 months ago
wow its like every cartoon i felt helped establish me as a child you seemed to hate. and the ones i would never care to watch you rant about. there are reasons shows become popular. because people enjoy watching them! :)
i was a big fan of doug, rugrats, ren & stimpy, rocko, ah real monsters, and hey arnold. pretty much everything you listed after that can be flushed down the toliet. hehe
    :) good article though!!

    btw nice article!
    80s90sboy87 Posted 6 years 2 months ago
I liked nick's Doug, pretty much all of the 90's Rugrats, never was much into Ren and Stimpy and Ah real monters, liked Rocko, I really liked Hey Arnold, Kablam was funny, liked Angry Beavers, Wild Thornberrys and CatDog were cool, and never really liked Spongebob. actually after Spongebob I slowly stopped watching Nickelodeon and started watching Cartoon Network. lol I don't even know what half of the stuff is on nick now.
AWKMARIOfan Posted 6 years 2 months ago
Awww... I remember watching all of these, and I really want to watch them again! at hot topic, they used to sell (and still do) Invader Zim merchandise! I still watch invader zim on youtube, and there is also a petition to bring invader zim and super mario brothers super show back on the air, both over a million sigs!
webbah Posted 6 years 2 months ago
nice article, the original rugrats rocked! The angry beavers, Doug, Ren and Stimpy, those were shows i watched and would let no one even touch the remote. Kablam was really funny, and shouldnt have been cancled so soon. Cartoons on nick today have no meaning, i mean Catscratch, the X's, and the new one: El Tigre! Who would want to watch that!! To me Spongebob is an annoying piece of crap. The only nicktoon i can sit through today is Danny Phantom, only because, the way its written, it reminds me of the some old shows. and it doesnt have lame random crap.
    ducktalesfan1977 Posted 6 years 2 months ago
    What are you talking about?
swift heart Posted 6 years 2 months ago
pretty much every kid shows are stupid shallow and crapy but what really annoys me is how short the cartoons are back when cartoons where only one once a week say saturday it lasted much longer now cartoons are showed 2 times a day every day and rush though a season in a month laveing weeks and weeks of reruns
    ducktalesfan1977 Posted 6 years 2 months ago
I agree with both Sideswipe and Optimus Prime Rib. I never liked the Nicktoons and I also think they caused cartoons to be the way they are today.
IloveRetroLives Posted 6 years 2 months ago
Nickelodeon is crap now. Mr Meaty? Zoey 101? What happened to all the good shows? What happened to Doug, Rugrats, Rocko?

Not everything after real monsters was pure trash cephalexin. Hey Arnold! was good until the movie ruined everything. Angry Beavers had it's moments.
Optimus Prime Rib Posted 6 years 2 months ago
I'll have to agree with my Autobot compatriot Sideswipe. Nickelodeon pretty much signaled the end of good cartoons with the current Cartoon Network skidmarks being the icing on the poop cake.
Sideswipe Posted 6 years 2 months ago
Sorry, but i really think all the Nicktoons sucked and Nickelodeon is "the man" in the downfall of cartoon, to the current uber-degraded level...
cephalexin Posted 6 years 2 months ago
everything and anything after 'real monsters' was pure trash.
princess of power Posted 6 years 2 months ago
I admit when I first clicked on the page, I was excited to read the article. Unfortunately, instead of seeing a proper analysis of the cartoons and what was liked and disliked about them, I just read something that came off as, dare I say it, biased and slightly elitist. I'm not one to usually comment on articles here, but I couldn't shy away from this one. Don't get me wrong; that's fine with me that you don't like current day Nickelodeon; I agree with you in that respect and I feel that the channel's saving grace is SpongeBob, but the fact that this article seems more like a bashing than an actual analysis, it makes me wonder, did you actually grow up during the time these cartoons were released? You yourself said that you weren't really fans of the majority of the cartoons or didn't watch them religiously when they were on, so in that respect, how would you know which era was "better"? I'm confused.
    C-Boss Posted 6 years 2 months ago
All the nicktoons were good in their own way....except the brothers flub....and the last season of CatDog...and that when the Nicktoons went off the air, it just dissapeared... Oh well better than MOST of the Newer Crap on Nickelodeon anyway
    fairweather1125 Posted 6 years 2 months ago
I disagree strongly. I was raised on Nick, everything about it. The only Disney I got was the Disney afternoon. All of Nick's toons rocked from the start. Ren and Stimpy was definatly one of the best, but Rugrats, Doug, Kablam, Aah Real Monsters, Hey Arnold, Rocket Power, Fairly Odd Parents, they all rock. And yes, i'm sure everyone only hates it because of its popularity but Sponge Bob is a great show. It's hilarious. Usually I hate how so much has changed since the great television of the 80's but Nick totally still kept it rockin.
    rnorred06 Posted 6 years 2 months ago
Nickelodeon is just plain boring now! The number one channel by far of my childhood just dissapoints me now. No more game shows(Nickelodeon Studios Gone, where they all took place at), no more cool live action shows and just too many lame nicktoons all day long today! I try to like Nick today very hard like I did in my childhood, but I just can't. Nick did not have one, not even one bad show back in the 90's. Nick did not dissapoint me one bit in the 90's. If it wasn't for Spongebob I wouldn't be watching Nick anymore. The Newer episodes of Spongebob aren't quite as classic as the old ones, but they are still funny and entertaining to watch.
    Daniel_BMS Posted 6 years 2 months ago
Contrary to popular belief. Spongebob is actually pretty good.
ArcadeKing Posted 6 years 2 months ago
What ever happened to You can't do that on televison.
tyrusspunk Posted 6 years 2 months ago
Doug, early rugrats were the best. My mom wouldnt let me watch ren & stimpy, but i did watch rockos modern life. I think its the BEST nicktoon ever. Hey arnold was great, b/c it could acctually happen. I liked rocket power and catdog, but i never like the thornberries. I would watch it. Spongebob was great until about 02-03 when it gained too much popularity and got a movie. Episodes after the movie really suck, and are nothing compared to the 99-00 seasons. But spongebob is the last good nicktoon out there, and sadly it has blended right into todays crap.

Avatar, el tigre, naked brothers band, wtf? And theres no more shows at universal studios, the last few okay shows are shown way too much.
djbriguy Posted 6 years 2 months ago
I loved Doug because it wasn't over the top. It kinda reminded me of an animated "Wonder Years." Rugrats was cool in the beginning and sucks now, i agree with you there.

I always liked Hey Arnold though.. It was down-to-earth like "Doug", but there was always some horrible moral to every story.. reminded me of freakin Full House.

Nicktoons today just suck... maybe kids have a different kind of humor than we did, but shows seemed more original in our child years. Great article
