The Spirit of Christmas: Commercials

My favorite Christmas Commercials

This time of year is a special and magical time for those who celebrate Christmas. The sounds and smells surrounding the holiday such as the abundance of fresh baked cookies, eggnog, hot chocolate and peppermint everything. Christmas wish lists, presents, trees, and stockings are also on everyone's minds. Not only are our everyday lives filled with these reminders as we shop, go to work, spend time at home with family, etc, but as well as what we see on the television.

Christmas time is one of my favorites when it comes to television, not only because of Christmas movies and television specials, but many commercials are Christmas related. There's something about seeing Christmas commercials that make me feel all warm inside. It is most likely because it takes me back to when all of my family would spend the holidays together and the times "were much simpler."

At 26 years old, I enjoy seeing many of those commercials from when I was a child, some are still being shown today.

Here's some of my all time favorites:

1. Hershey Kisses: We Wish You a Merry Christmas

This commercial has been around for over 25 years, debuting in 1989. It is a classic and is still aired today in 2017. It is one of my favorites because I grew up ringing handbells and we always played at Christmastime. The commercial is simple, but puts everyone in a great mood. Also, I've always received Hershey Kisses inside my stocking since I was a kid.

2. M&M's: Santa Claus

The iconic M&M Christmas commercial advertising green and red M&M's is another favorite. It debuted in 1996 and has been a hit ever since. Once again, I have seen this commercial still aired today. Not only does it make you crave M&M's, but it is humorous with the red and yellow M&Ms. Hopefully, 20 years from now this commercial will still be aired.

3. Campbell's Soup: Melting Snowman

Now, this commercial has always been one of my favorites, probably because it reminds me of the times my brother and I would spend all day and evening outside snowtubing or just playing around in the snow. As soon as we'd come inside, we'd have a bowl of hot chicken noodle soup and some hot cocoa and get into our pajamas.

4. Coca Cola; Santa Packs

The Christmas Coca-Cola commercials are always some to remember with the polar bears and penguins, but the Santa Pack advertising for Coke is probably the best. The jingle alone is what I think makes this commercial stand out. Various Santa Pack Caravan commercials aired throughout the mid 1990s, but I personally like the one from 1995-1996 the best. Who doesn't like to enjoy some Coca-Cola at Christmastime?

5. Hess Trucks: Firetruck (2000)

My brother always got a Hess Truck for Christmas every year until he got to be a teenager. One of the last trucks he received was the firetruck in 2000 and it was definitely one of the coolest Hess Trucks that he had. The Hess Truck commercials are only shown at Christmastime and they are always some to remember just because of the catchy jingle sung by a choir of children. I don't really see them aired on TV anymore, but I do hear them on the radio a couple of times around Christmas.

6. Burger King: Disney Glasses

I miss the different promotions Burger King use have in the 1990s and early 2000s. One of the most popular was the Disney Glasses in 1994. Now I remember having a few of these and I wish that I would have kept them since they are considered a collector's item to some. If only we knew back then that these things would be worth something more than the $.89 plus the cost of a Whopper meal in 1994. Also, did anyone else think Grandpa was a cheapskate?

7. Nintendo 64: Jingle Bells

The biggest item on every kid's Christmas wish list during the 1996 and 1997 Christmas season was the Nintendo 64. With game titles like Super Mario, Mario Kart, Zelda, Super Smash Brothers and Goldeneye, it was one of the best systems at that time and still is one of the best consoles today. This commercial didn't come out until 1998, but the Nintendo 64 was still very popular at that time. It still reminds me of the Christmas my brother and I got our Nintendo 64.

8. Honey Nut Cheerios: Scrooge

This cereal commercial is another commercial that has been around for a long time, since 1989. I don't know if it is still aired today in 2017, but I know it was a couple of years ago. I never cared for A Christmas Carol, but this commercial was one of my favorites because not everyone is pleasant this time of year and it shows that some things as simple as a delicious bowl of Honey Nut Cheerios can bring people together.

9. Folgers Coffee: Coming Home

This commercial isn't as old as the others, but it has been one of my more recent favorites. This commercial aired in 2009 and I was in my freshmen year of college. This commercial reminds me of traveling home for the holidays to see my family. Also, the iconic Folgers jingle is in it and has its own holiday twist to it.

10. NOW That's What I Call Music: Christmas Collection

The NOW That's What I Call Music CDs were very popular in the late 1990s and early 2000s until digital MP3s and iTunes became popular. During the peak of NOW's success, the developed some Christmas albums (the first one was the best in my opinion), which consisted of both classic Christmas music and modern hits on two CDs. The commercial for the CDs were always on all the time back in the day and I have always had the scene with the creepy snowman singing Elvis's "Blue Christmas" in my head. It is one song that I always find annoying, particularly because of this commercial.

This is only a handful of hundreds of classic Christmas commercials, but I wanted to share 10 of my all time favorite and most memorable ones. I hope you all enjoyed a blast from the past and put you all in the Christmas spirit.
