Other Saturday Morning Shows

Pole Position, Tigersharks, Jem, and more. What Saturday morning was.

This is just a continuation of some of the cartoons that were my favourtes. Some you may remember and some you may not remember. Enjoy!

Pole Position (CBS 1984-1985)

Pole Position is based loosely on the Namco video game from Atarri. It tells the story of three children who are orphaned, when they aren't racing they fight crime wiith some highly intelligent race cars. The show lasted until December 1984.

The Characters

The characters for the Pole Position TV Show include.

Daisy Darret (Portrayed by Keleena Kiff)

Daisy is the pre-teen sister of Dan and Tess Darret

Dan Darret (Portrayed by David Coburn)

Dan is Daisy and Tess's hot headed brother who drives Roadie.

Tess Darret (Portrayed by Lisa Lindgren)

Tess is the self-apointed leaderof the Pole Position racing team she's the oldest sister to Dan and Daisy. She drives Wheels.

Other Characters

There were other characters in Pole Position. They made up the Pole Position racing team.

Dr Zarchary Darret (Portrayed by Jack Angel)

Tess, Daisy, and Dan's uncle and charged with the Pole Position race team. Dr Darret is confined to a wheelchair.

Kuma (Portrayed by Marilyn Schreffler)

Kuma is Daisy's pet. She is a genetic cross between a monkey and a raccoon. Kuma is a Japanese word meaning "bear"

Wheels (Portrayed by Melvin Franklin)

Wheels is a 1964 mustang driven by Tess Darret. His Artiffical Intelligence errs on the side of caution a lot more than Roadie does. He can be frequently heard saying "I'm getting too old for this."

Roadie (Portrayed by Daryl Hickman)

Roadie is a more futuristic car driven by Dan Darret. His artifficial intelligence is more wreckless than Wheels is. He can frequently be heard saying: "Anything you say Dan!"

The Get-Along-Gang CBS (1984-1986)

The Get-Along-Gang from l to r: Woolma Lamb, Montgomery Moose, Dotty Dog, Zipper Cat, Bingo Beaver, and Portia Porcupine.

The Get-Along-Gang revolves around a group of kids who really get along well with each other. A dog, a cat, a lamb, a moose, a beaver and a porcupine all have wonderful adventures while learning valuable life lessons.

Jem 1985-1987

Originally a part of the Big Foot/Jem Adventure Hour this cartoon portrays two bands and what they'll do to become stars. Jem and the Holograms, led by the ever popular Jem, and the Misfits, lead by the mischeivious Pizzaz.

Jem and the Holograms or the Misfits..... Who's your favourite?

Jerrica Benton is the young daughter of Jack Benton but she is also Eric Raymond's rival to be the president of Starlight Music. In the begining of the Jem TV series Jerrica believes that Eric may have had something to do with the death of her father.

The Comic Strip (1987)

The Comic Strip was an hour long cartoon series that started in 1987. It consisted of any one of the following cartoons.

Be sure and catch all of the action and undersea adventures on the Tigersharks

The Mini Monsters. Is your kid a monster? Camp Mini-Mon is the answer

Who can do hip-hop better than a frog can? Get down with the Street Frogs.

With Karate Kat. He's lean, he's mean, a karate machine. KEOW BABY!

On the Comic Strip

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (1987-1993)

Heroes in a half-shell
Turtle power.

I remember this pretty well. Raphael, Donnatello, Michaelangelo, and Leonardo stay underground while trying to fight Shredder and the Foot. This phenominon spawned toys of every size shape and form and three horrible live-action movies.

Pee Wee's Playhouse (1986-1991)

Now I loved Pee Wee Herman. It was my one reason for watching CBS every Saturday. But as soon as he was caught engaging in a lewd act in porno theater bathroom one day I was kind of disappointed in him. Because I looked at him as my idol. A lot of kids at that time looked up to Pee Wee Herman.

Now trouble seems to find Paul Reubens where ever he goes. I kind of wish CBS hadn't cancelled Pee Wee's Playhouse but in way I understand why they did cancel it. He's not an appropriate role-model for kids. For the years that the show aired I'm kind of glad that I got to watch Pee Wee.

Muppet Babies (1984-1990)

The Muppet Babies Title Sequence

Now this was by and large one of my favourite TV shows to be made by Jim Henson, besides Sesame Street of course, and one of the main reasons I had for waking up on Saturday Mornings. I couldn't even begin to imagine why I would wake up and watch CBS without this show but alas all good things must come to an end.

The Muppet Babies are: Animal, Skeeter, Scooter, Fozzie, Kermit, Gonzo, Rowlf and Piggy.

Denver The Last Dinosaur

You could watch this animated educational cartoon Saturday or Sunday mornings dependent upon what station you were watching it on.

Voltron: Defender of the Universe (1984)

I remember watching this show on Saturdays whenever I could. It's still one of my favourite anime shows next to Robotech.

What I remember most about Voltron is that they had a stong female lead in Princess Allura and there was no stopping her once she became determined to do something. Whether it was piloting the blue lion or leading her planet to victory over King Zarkon and Prince Lotor. It was always exciting to see this worthwhile cartoon.

Other Note Worthy Saturday Morning Cartoons that are from/went into the 1980s include.

The Smurfs (1981-1990)

Robotech

King Kong

Tarzan Lord Of The Jungle

Fat Albert and the Cosby Kids

G.I. Joe A Real American Hero

Alvin and the Chipmunks

Mr T

Hulk Hogan's Rock N Wrestling

Punky Brewster

Alf the Animated Series

And that's my extensive list of every children's show I could have ever watched on Saturday Mornings. I hope you enjoyed it. Thanks for your undivided attention.

I really do miss him. I saw him hosting the game show You Don't Know Jack before he was charged with posession of child porn. I still love the guy and his work but you know what? After the incident in the porno theatre bathroom I kind of lost respect for him.

I LOVE Pee-wee's Playhouse. Even now, even after Paul Reubens had gotten jailed. Actually, Reubens himself had decided to bring the show to an end before his affair. So his reign on the screen was due to end no matter what happened.

No Lockett just has this amazing inability to let shit go.
Celeste Posted 6 years 2 months ago
Well, it may have had something to do with the fact that I was becoming a teenager at the time. I had nothing against the cartoons but when you take a cartoon, and if it happens to be a cartoon that you've loved since you were 11, and turn it into a live action movie where you have these animatronic robots that don't even look like the cartoon turtles then you're bound to look at it in a negative light.
Seeing TMNT on video for the first time with my brother and his friend I was like "Okay this is silly."
Every afternoon this month they've been showing the three older TMNT movies on YTV and the more I watch the movies; the sillier I thought they were.
The TMNT movies were just silly to me.
IceIceGirl Posted 6 years 2 months ago
How can you possible say the TMNT movies were horrible?? TMNT (the first) was the highest grossing independently made film of it's time (not sure if that's been beated yet)...and in my opinion for a movie with guys in turtle costumes it was pretty realistic and well acted (now that i said that I almost want to take it back!!)

obviously i was a JEM fanatic, but some of those other ones are gems too' nice selection if i might add

I do remember these shows as I was a kid in this era. I do agree with Ducktalesfan1977 when he said Saturday morning cartoons started dying off in the 1990s.
pbot Posted 6 years 2 months ago
I used to watch Pole Position when I was about 3 or 4 years old, and I basically thought it was the most amazing thing ever. It totally blew my mind! Dude, I can't believe you found this! Awesome!

I remember seeing a trailer to POLE POSITION, The music was killer, and i still remember it slightly in my head.
Muppet Babies, wow! me, my sis and my bro, watched this show so much i can remember every bit of it. Does anyone remember a rabbit in one episode, he kept looking for his cousins Flopsie and Mopsie. LOL i loved this character!
my sister in law loves Jem, she watches it all the time on Cable nowdays.

Remember the shows, Remember the music, Remember the Retro!

Yeah, the TMNT movies weren't that bad, maybe 3 was a stretch, but come on!
    ducktalesfan1977 Posted 6 years 3 months ago
Too bad Saturday mornings cartoons started going downhill when the 80s ended. I wish these stations would stop airing this garbage we can see on every other channel (i.e. CBS playing Nick Jr stuff and ABC airing Disney stuff) and play the blocks from 1966-1989. Now that would be super awesome!
Gitoku Posted 6 years 3 months ago
Hulk Hogan never had that much hair!
    devin_b Posted 6 years 3 months ago
I only know of less than half these shows, and about half of that I ever cared for. But it's good to see TMNT up there, I still remember when it was really popular.
jerbojones Posted 6 years 3 months ago
I remember all these cartoons except the King Kong one.
taekwondonut Posted 6 years 3 months ago
HEYYYY! the first ninja turtle movie wasnt bad... it wasnt as cheesy as the other 2. it was all about the ninja turtles and the Real ghostbusters!
EightiesCrazy Posted 6 years 3 months ago
Little upset that Junk Yard Dog looks like an escaped slave but I still have to smile when I think about the good ol' days!!!
VibraEssentia Posted 6 years 3 months ago
On that list, my faves are:

Fat Albert and the Cosby Kids
    JEM
Pee Wee's Playhouse (Sheesh Pee Wee was a grown man.
The porn movie bathroom was his
business. If I lost respect for
adults who had sex and urges,
I'd be very disappointed in every
    parent out there. If adults
didn't sexual urges, none of us
would be here. I mean imagine
doing a kid's show and having to
promote it and be immmerse in kid
stuff most, if not ALL, of the
time. I know I'have have to blow
some steam as an adult too. The
only thing he did wrong was the
lewd act in a public place. EVEN
at that, its not like he was in a
regular theatre - he was in a
    porn theatre. Its not like
any kids would have seen him.)

    Hulk Hogan's Rockin Wrestlin'
    TMNT
djbriguy Posted 6 years 3 months ago
Three horrible live action movies from TMNT?? are you kidding?!

Maybe the 3rd movie... but the first movie was incredible and it stayed true to the ninja turtle story line. II: "Secret of the Ooz" was more comedic but was still true to the characters at least.

I'm just baffled that any TMNT fan of that era could say ALL THREE were bad.... :\
Rainbow Bright Posted 6 years 3 months ago
I enjoyed this article very much, i only remember half of those shows though.
cdatelle Posted 6 years 3 months ago
Pee-Wee's Playhouse will always be my favorite!
    ducktalesfan1977 Posted 6 years 3 months ago
Now these are the cartoons I'm talking about, nice article despite the spelling errors.
BarthBurger Posted 6 years 3 months ago
I loved Hulk Hogan's Rock 'N' Wrestling when I was a Kid. Thanks for bringing back some memories.
warriorman Posted 6 years 3 months ago
Although I never got to watch Hulk Hogans Rock N Wrestling, I probably would have loved it, but at least I did get to watch TMNT.
Celeste Posted 6 years 3 months ago
I realize that I don't have a very good excuse for using bad grammar but this article was almost three months in the making and I wanted to get it done. I don't really proof-read anything because it's all very messy and very complicated for me to get my head around.
I do appreciate that you pointed that out that my grammar needs some improvement.
bamfingnightcrawler Posted 6 years 3 months ago
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 1987-1996, NOT 1993. Some of your grammar isn't good.
toonwatcher Posted 6 years 3 months ago
Pole Position has one of the best intros during its time. Very underrated show.
Dr. Shrinker Posted 6 years 3 months ago
Other Sat Morning shows unmentioned that I loved were "Saturday Supercade" and "Turbo Teen". And can anyone else remember "Goldie Gold & Action Jack"?
ooliyo Posted 6 years 3 months ago
I used to watch the comic strip series, I didn't remember "tigersharks" being part of it. "Karate Kat" was my favorite. man was it haliarious. I don't think I ever liked "the get along gang." but I have an old 1985 VHS recording of it.
    Score:
    11
