Classic Cartoon-->Movie Screen

List of Classic Cartoons that should be made into movies (and a few that shouldnt)

Hey Everyone,

With Hollywood desperate for ideas, and completely willing to capitalize on nostalgia, I thought it might be a good idea to make a list of cartoons that would make for interesting, and in some cases, very relevant movies for our time. I'm eager to hear your response.

10. "Gummi Bears"

I know, I know. You were thinking Carebears? Uh-uh. If I'm going to the movies I don't want to see a bunch of hippy ursines with flowers and hearts on their belly's "hugging it out". I want to see some hardcore substance abusing Bears who bounce their enemies to death. That's a movie.

9. "G.I. Joe"

Actually, it's pretty unlikely this isn't being made into a movie, but just in case "GOOOO, JOE!" With the war on and everything, this might not be the greatest time for a gung ho-blow up the bad guy-America Rocks-movie but then again, if it were done as a sort of Jarhead meets James Bond, I could see it being a blockbuster.

8. "Ducktales" or "Darkwing Duck"

Of course in CG, not live action. Can you imagine a bunch of ducks dressed in clothes with their mouths moving like the movie "Babe"? Not a pretty sight. Anyway, I just don't think there are enough animorphic ducks around anymore and Disney has yet to successfully transfer a known 2D icon (like Mickey Mouse) to the 3D format. I believe a Duckberg movie could be brilliant if done right.

The one problem might be is that in today's pedophilophobic world a middle-aged Bazillionaire swimming around half naked with his half naked nephews might be considered a bit too risque.

7. "Teddy Ruxpin"

Ok, so this is the second bear cartoon I've added but it's a bit of a cheat because I see Teddy Ruxpin as the SCARIEST HORROR MONSTER KNOWN TO MANKIND.

Take Chucky and give him fangs and teeth and a giant talking worm as his partner in crime. We're onto you, Teddy Rasputin.

6. "Captain Planet and the Planeteers"

Perfect timing. Let Al Gore play Captain Planet already. I mean did anyone see his audition tape "An Inconvenient Truth"? Cast Halle Berry as Gaia and the rest as unknowns. C'mon, Hollywood!

5. "Thundercats"

Never were felines more sexy... um, i mean... uh...

4. "Dexter's Laboratory"

Simply put, this is still one of the greatest Cartoons ever made.

3. "Ren and Stimpy"

I think the picture actually speaks for itself.

2. "Captain N the Game Master" and/or "The Legend of Zelda"

Everyone says they should make a Zelda movie but Captain N was awesome. It's unlikely they would make a Captain N game but if it were tied in with Smash Bros. or something like that, I can see it happening. As for Zelda, it's only a matter of time.

Time. HA!

Zelda! Time?

Get it?

I hate you guys.

1. "Pinky and The Brain"
.

The most ingenius idea for a cartoon ever would make one helluva movie. It's been talked about a long time but really, Hollywood, MAKE THIS MOVIE!!!

Honorable mentions:

"Eek The Cat", "Rocko's Modern Life", "The Popples", "The Carebears", "Two Stupid Dogs", "Secret Squirrel", "The Smurfs"

Top 5 that should never be made into either a full-length/CGI/live action movie.

And wouldn't you know it, a lot of the ones I would have listed have already shamefully made it to the screen (I'm looking at you Fat Albert and Doug's First Movie) but of course there are others.

5. Hammerman (starring MC Hammer)

If they make this movie I'll shoot myself.

4. The Bratz

Making sluts out of little girls everywhere.

3. Woody The Woodpecker

I can still hear him laughing... MAKE IT STOP!

2. Top Cat

WHAT IS THIS SHOW ABOUT? I don't get it? WHAT'S THE POINT? HE'S A CAT WHO LIVES IN A GARBAGE CAN!

Definitely not a high concept idea.

1. My Little Pony

Because if i see a trailer for this I will go Godfather on every equine in a 10 mile radius.

Thanks everyone. Add your thoughts!

I agree with thundercats and GI-joe, those would make great movies, but how about silverhawks and the centurions? those would be amazing.

Ren & Stimpy is another good idea. Nick really needs to give this show a chance. It has toilet humor, funny visual gags, and plain lunacy. Kids would love it. But apparently all Nick seems to be really interested in is Spongebob. =/

A Pinky and the Brain movie would be great. But judging by recent trends (Garfield, Cat in the Hat, Alvin and the Chipmunks), would you really want one?
Spongeroks Posted 5 years 10 months ago
Despite what I said, you still did a good list because I agree with everything else, although My Little Pony and Ducktales had movies, and I got good news and bad news.
Good News: Thundercats and G.I. Joe are getting movies in 2010.
Bad News: Bratz is getting a movie later this year.
Spongeroks Posted 5 years 10 months ago
I'd rather have Woody Woodpecker and Top Cat have movies than have Captain Planet have a movie.
raulcarlos Posted 5 years 10 months ago
    that were some good time

i like to see gummy bears as a movie that rule
swift heart Posted 6 years 5 months ago
there were 3! care bear movies from 1985 to 1988 but the 3rd movie did so poorly it bombed and which is why they left the air in the usa for along time and why the care cousins were droped form all future movies

J-Man, what are you talking about? Peter Jackson is an art destroyer? I must have missed something.

Anyway, I'd like to see a Legend of Zelda movie. I think that in the right hands it could be highly entertaining. But of course, it'd probably end up being totally CG instead of live action...which I guess is okay if they take the time to write a good story for it...
    J-Man Posted 6 years 5 months ago
The last thing we need is a Legend of Zelda movie dont forget Super Mario Brothers... Peter Jackson needs to keep his art distroying hands off of Zelda.
hellointernet Posted 6 years 5 months ago
I mostly agree with you, especially about 'Ren adn Stimpy'. That would be my number one wishful movie. BUT Top Cat was great. What's the point? Read between the lines man. He's a cat who lives in a trash can, but he's all class. It's a great toon that I model myself after :P

You should do more research on this topic. G.I. Joe had a movie, it was just decided to release to TV instead of theatres. As well, Care Bears, My Little Pony, and Duck Tales all had theatrical released movies. Care Bears had two actually.
Knites Posted 6 years 5 months ago
A Zelda movie. hmmm. I like it, but I can already feel the powers that be in Hollywood screwing it up. As for Captain N, That could be cool.
    Captain-N Posted 6 years 5 months ago
.......And another thing. I adore Zelda and would NEVER want it to be turned into a movie!

And Captain-Planet? No way... That show sucked!
    Captain-N Posted 6 years 5 months ago
I dont think its worth waiting for something like Thundercats, even though I would die to see them onscreen. The He-Man movie is considered dead, and that will happen sooner than the cats.

GIJOE actually might happen some day though... There's been a script going around the hollywood development hell for some years. (Head over to latinoreview.com for a review of that script!)

The plot focus a lot on the whole Ninja thing... With Snake Eyes a one of the main characters..

And with Transformers just around the corner, who knows?
Nashida Posted 6 years 5 months ago
A Zelda movie might be cool, actually.

I'm still laughing at Teddy Rasputin...truer words were never spoken.
dalmatianlover Posted 6 years 5 months ago
They made a Duck Tales movie and a My Little Pony movie, just to let you know.
warriorman Posted 6 years 5 months ago
I'd like to go off topic here for a second, even thought Super Mario Brothers was already made into a movie, just for the record, IT SUCKED BAD, they totally destroyed a classic cartoon by making it into a movie with a whole different motive/plot.

Back on record, I'D LOVE to see a legend of zelda movie on the big screen, not only would it be awesome, but it also happens to be my 2nd favorite cartoon ever, and I don't care what my friends would say if they knew. I'D just tell them where they can go(If you know what I mean LOL).
swift heart Posted 6 years 5 months ago
i think theres gonna be a my little pony remake but its probbley gonna be stright to dvd since they dont even have a cartoon anymore

care bears had 2! cgi movies that were crapy which is why there makeing some dvds and a theatrical movie which is only to be 50% or less CGI and the rest is to be hand drawn cartoon so im looking forword to it after this year of CGI movies
    pancho420 Posted 6 years 5 months ago
How about a live action Voltron movie? G-Force maybe? A live action GI Joe movie would rock.I'm sure some movie studio people read these things.Do you guys think they would have considered making a Transformers movie if they didn't?
sakket Posted 6 years 5 months ago
id much rather watch a ducktales movie in live action.. with actual ducks..
    fragglerocker1020 Posted 6 years 5 months ago
Pinky and the brain would rock...Captain N hell yeah...

    Maybe not Thundercats though...

    Unless they redesign their costumes
takineko Posted 6 years 5 months ago
Oh, btw Spielberg thought about doing a movie for Pinky and the Brain, supposedly the movies Mouse Hunt, Stewart Little and a few others came about out of screen tests for a possible Pinky and the Brain movie.
takineko Posted 6 years 5 months ago
I agree with Pinky and the Brain, and this article was a great idea, but I wish you'd went into detail a bit about the qualities of the shows that would make them so good on the big screen-- convince us!
dalmatianlover Posted 6 years 5 months ago
Pretty good article. I'm sure they all would have made great movies, but TEDDY RUXPIN??? I don't think so.
mogie Posted 6 years 5 months ago
some good stuff here. My guess is that they'll make an anime version of zelda and mess it all up. Captain N idea was pretty good. Who knows, judging by the Wii's weird joystick, the nintendo nuts may actually do something like a captain n movie.
