A look back when cereals were cool!

There were regular cereals like Frosted Flakes and Trix, and then there were cereals that didn’t make much sense but were cool nonetheless. If you read below you’ll know what I’m talking about.

#1- Urkle O’s
This is just fuckin funny! A cereal named after the nerd from Family Matters……… I WOULD TOTALLY BUY THIS! I’m a sucker for pop culture shit like this. When Family Matters was on TV it was a very popular show so it doesn’t surprise me they sold something like this in stores.I bet Jaleel White is regretting making this commercial.

#2-Ghostbusters Cereal

Once again Ghostbusters had a huge impact on everyone in the 80s. I’m sure that kids everywhere were bugging the shit out they’re parents to buy them this cereal. I found this cool old commercial on YouTube, hope you enjoy!

#3- Nintendo Cereal

Nintendo changed the world in the 80s and 90s, so it’s only right that they got a breakfast cereal! What could be better than eating Mario and Zelda on a Saturday morning? I’ll answer that, FUCKIN NOTHING.

#4- Mr. T Cereal
He’ll kick your ass and feed you breakfast too! Mr. T got his badass reputation from the hit TV show the A-Team, but that’s not what this cereals about. In 1983 he got a kids show on NBC rightly named Mister T. I only ever seen a couple episodes, it’s just him and some kids going around kicking ass and saving the day. Here’s another commercial.

#5- C3PO’s
I think you’ll all agree with me, whenever a Star Wars movie comes out that’s all you hear about and then it dies off until the next movie. If you don’t know what I’m talking about just wait a year or so, because now that Disney owns the rights to Star Wars I expect new movies. Anyway I think it’s just awesome! A cereal made by C3PO and R2D2, I would definitely buy this.

#6 Donkey Kong and Donkey Kong Jr. Cereal

Donkey Kong and his son Donkey Kong Jr. had a cult following because of the Donkey Kong Arcade games he was in. And Donkey Kong Jr. was famous for his arcade game. I really don’t know why this cereal was really made? Maybe back in the day people in marketing made cereal on whatever kids thought was moderately interesting.

#6- G.I. Joe Cereal

First of all, if you don’t know who G.I. Joe is then get off of Retro Junk! G.I. Joe was a badass army hero action figure and later a Sunday morning cartoon. Every guy I knew at school watched this! My buddies and I use to play G.I. Joe on the playground, but we got yelled at by a bitch teacher because it looked like we were playing to rough. Anyway that’s just to show you how popular this show was.

#7 Rainbow Brite

If you had a little sister in the 80s you know what I’m talking about. Rainbow Brite was a TV show for girls in 1985, it didn’t last very long but a line of toys came out after it. I remember I would always get my cereal and my sister would get this.

#8 Gremlin Cereal

Don’t feed the gremlin cereal! Once again this was a big thing in the 80s and was a defining movie of that decade. This movie was popular but I don’t remember any big gremlin mania or anything.

#9 Ms Pac-man, Pac-man Cereal

I was looking online for these commercials and found this one. Supposedly that kid is Christian Bale, I thought Batman had a sad childhood? Anyway, I was going to stop after the Gremlin Cereal but I thought this one was cool.

Most of these cereals were from Ralston, and some are still around,
but disguised. Mr. T cereal is simply Cap'n Crunch shaped into
the letter T. C3POs began in the 70s as Graham Crackos; they later
became Pro-Grain. Pac-Man was Kix with Lucky Charms-type marshmallows. Most of these cereals were color and flavor,
artificial as the day is long. (Strawberry and banana in Urkel-
Os? YUCCH!)

lol I remember having Pokemon cereal with Mashmallow pieces in the morning whilst watching WCW wrestling before school. I think they used to air Nitro at midnight, and of course I wasn't allowed to stay up late to watch it so I VCR'd it and used to watch it the next morning. I still have those tapes, but unfortunately the cereal is all gone

OREO O's should still be made in America. I actually tried to get them from South Korea once, though the shipping price was ridiculous and so I didn't. And seriously this is why the 1980-2001 decades were amazing: creativity, video games and television; so good that even the commercials are good. And that says a lot due to the boring commercials we have today, I mean for explaining the thing they got they don't fail to do that, but it's just boring and I don't really want to buy the product. I would've for sure gotten Nintendo Cereal if I knew about it at the time.

I remember most of these cereals. I hated 3POs though.

One could not eat Gremlin cereal after midnight. Truth.

Star Wars cereal was yummy yummy.

I remember all of these except the GI Joe cereal. Back in the 80 and 90s I loved all things Nintendo but their cereal was just nasty. Very disappointing. Donkey Kong and Pac Man cereals were pretty good but they were really just Cap'n Crunch and Lucky Charms in different shapes.

I had seen most of these in my youth, but never heard about the Gremlins cereal. With all the controversy the movie cause, I can imagine it didn't last long on the shelves. I'll always remember the limited edition Ghostbusters cereal box that had a giant holographic sticker on the front. THAT was awesome!

I remember the Nerds cereal (yuck) and one of my favorite was the Swedish Chef from the Muppets cereal.

The cereal with the Swedish Chef was Post's "Croonchy Stars".
I tried it because of its cinnamon flavor; it's now apparent why
Cinnamon Toast Crunch creamed it in sales.

Mr. T's cereal was used in "Pee Wee's Big Adventure." I think it was just the "T's" from Alpha-bits

I miss Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles cereal and Smurfs cereal.

To replicate Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, mix the marshmallows
from Lucky Charms with some Rice Chex.

The themed cereals I grew up with were the "monster" cereals...Franken Berry, Count Chocula and Boo Berry. In the mid/late 1970's there were Moonstones and Grins & Smiles & Giggles & Laughs.

I liked the G&S&G&L ads with the grouchy computer with the Fred
Allen voice. ("Why did the chicken cross the road?" "So he wouldn't
have to listen to your rotten jokes."

I kind of wish you were old enough to actually remember these cereals. But you're just a 17 year old child. Thumbs down.

As a guy, 'm not ashamed to say it, I had Rainbow Brite toys when I was a kid. I had a big 12 or 18 inch doll, a little 8 inch-or so doll, and a couple of the furry star things Rainbow Brite hung around with. Still have the star things in my room. It was good, decent, family entertainment, which is something that you don't have nowdays.

I didn't have one myself but I seem to remember the Lurkey doll from this line being somewhat popular among boys. He was kinda cool looking and made a great big hairy beast for your GI Joes or He-Man to fight.

The Nintendo Cereal System and the Ghostbusters cereals were mainstays at my house!

I still wish they made those Donkey Kong/Jr cereals today or use the same recipe for something else as they were better tasting versions of Captain Crunch/Berries. Nothing ever beat Peanutbutter Crunch though and that's the only cereal my mom liked in the 80s/early 90s. She would get me the DKjr cereal so I would leave her PB Crunch alone, lol.
