Animation to Live Action 2

Here are the movies that never should have made it past the brainstorming sessions.

Now continuing on with my previous article. Well, let's just face it there are some live-action flicks that never should have made it past the brain storming sessions. Here's a list of some of the one trick pony movies that bombed at the box office and spawned horrible straight to video sequals.

Masters of the Universe

Dolph Lundgren plays He-Man in the 1987 live-action flick Masters of the Universe.

Where do I even start with this movie? I was only 11 when I saw it and not only did Dolph Lundgren not look like He-Man he wasn't even an actor but an Engineering student. This low budget and limitless arrays of people who didn't have any kind of acting experience what so ever was probably one of the worst TV to movie adaptations I've ever seen in my short life. You'd think that the producers of this movie could find someone who actually looks like the cartoon character and can act like the cartoon character? But NOOOOOOOO! They had to hire someone who didn't have any acting experience to play He-Man the most powerful man in the universe. This was just career suicide for everyone who was involved with this horrible attrocity of a live-action flick.
How they even considered Dolph Lundgren for a role as important as He-Man is I'll never know but hiring an engineering student to play him wasn't the best way to go. Stick to engineering there Dolph because as an actor you stink.

He-Man and Skeletor's forces outside Castle Greyskull.

I can safely say that this movie wasn't very well thought out. It takes a master of boobery to make a live-action flick that's this bad. The way that this movie was presented just begs the question: just what the hell were the writers thinking even making this movie in the first place? The special effects in this movie are horrible and the plot? Well, there wasn't even a plot to speak of.

Dungeons and Dragons.

Oh yes how can we forget this attrocious mess of a movie that starred Marlon Wayans as the magician? This is an instance where I'll say that the cartoons are better.

Another Hollywood floppola that makes me wonder what they were thinking? An awsomely bad plot. Sure the kids want to get home to the real world just like in the cartoon but then that's where the similarities end.

They had

The Thief
The Barbarian
The Magician
The Cavalier
The Archer
The Acrobat

Where in the hell did they get Marlon Wayans to even be in this movie anyways? That was the worst instance of career suicide I've ever seen because Marlon Wayans appears to have dropped off of the radar as well as some of the other actors who had parts in this movie.

This is the only instance where I'll say you're better off trying to find the original cartoons on DVD rather than watch this attrocious mess.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

Yes they even made 3 horrible TMNT movies one after another that starred some second rate actors that I'm sure nobody has ever heard of at the time. Just Robbie Rist but that's about it.
I quite honestly can't say what kids ever saw in this movie but I can say this my brother, who was 12 at the time, and his friend would have sat through anything. Just a case of boys will be boys.
It tells the tale of how the TMNT came to be but the plot was horrible, and the acting was even worse. What the hell were they thinking making the TMNT movie, and its equally bad sequals The Secret of the Ooze and Turtles In Time, without really brain storming ideas on how the movie should have been thought out. Not that it was ever that well thought out in the first place.
The sequal spawned a threequal called Turtles in Time. I can't imagine why any kid would find this movie entertaining because really it isn't. It's just silly and poorly co-ordinated Power Rangersesque fighting skills with absolutely no thought put into it what so ever.

The Bat-Man Series

The Bat-Man series of movies became horrible after Michael Keaton left. As a new Bat-Man came to wear the cowl the more horrible the movies became.

Let's start with Bat-Man Returns.

Starring Michael Keaton as Bruce Wayne, Danny DiVito as the Penguin, and Michelle Pfiffer as the Catwoman. I think that this movie is just begging for two questions to be asked.

1. Where the hell did they get Michelle Pfiffer to play Catwoman in the first place?

and

2. What the hell was Tim Burton thinking keeping this movie franchise going when this particular movie tanked at the box-office?

You've got the usual superhero vs supervillians senario, that started out well, but it ended on a rather boorish note. Tim Burton should have fought to keep Michael Keaton as Batman. At least then the acting in this movie would have been consistant with the acting in the previous two movies.

Batman Forever

This attrocity of a Batman movie starred Val Kilmer as Batman, Chris O'Donnell as Robin, Tommy Lee Jones as Two Face, Jim Carrey as the Riddler, poor Frank Gorshin is probably rolling over in his grave right now, and Alicia Silverstone as Batgirl.

Yvonne Craig on the left and Alicia Silverstone on the right. Who's the prettier Bat Girl?

Hello? What were the writers smoking when they thought of this? To cast Val Kilmer in such an important role as Bruce Wayne and his alter-ego Batman. Not to mention Jim Carrey as the Riddler? Riddle me this and riddle me that. What were the writers thinking when they thought of that?

Batman and Robin

Now if you're a Batman purist you just may be thinking the very same thing as I am........ Think that this movie franchise can't get any worse? Well, think again. Now George Clooney wears the Batman Cowel as he goes out after Poison Ivy, played by Uma Thurman, and Mr Freeze, played by Arnold Schwartzenegger, and the plots, or lack there of, keep getting worse and worse.

Batman Begins

And the worst of all the Batman movies and probably one of the sorriest excuses for a movie that I've ever come across is Batman Begins. This ungodly mess stars Christan Bale as Bruce Wayne as a young man whose parents are killed in a botched robbery.

And now there's the rest.

Catwoman

You'd thiink that Halle Berry being the talented african american actress that she is would be able to find a role that's as worthy of her talents as the X-Men movie was. Yes you'd think so wouldn't you?
Let me give you a brief synopsis of this movie so I can move on.

Halle Berry's character gets scratched by a cat and she becomes the Catwoman. Prowling in the middle of the night and acting like a cat in a very revealing dominatrix costume and a cat mask. She chases after the bad guys and helps the police to put them in jail. End of story.

The Hulk

In the cartoon Dr Bruce Banner gets belted by gamma rays and turns into the Hulk whenever he gets angry but in the movie there's a new twist. There's no actor to play the Hulk. The Hulk in the movie exists only through CGI or computer graphics imaging. What? No Lou Ferigno to play the Hulk? No actor saying "Please don't make me angry. You won't like me when I'm angry."?

Oh well like I say: "you'll never go broke appealing to the lowest common denominator."

Super Man The Return.

When you think of Superman you usually think of actors like Dean Cain and Tom Welling but in the movie they cease to use any sort of intellectual thinking when brainstorming ideas for this movie. Well, let's just face it the costume looks like someone walking around in boxer shorts that have had way too much laundry starch put on them through the rinse cycle.

This horrible mistake stars Brandon Routh as Clarke Kent a mild-mannered reporter that becomes a superhero crime fighter durring the night. The same ol' same ol'. Since last year I haven't seen a Superman that was more stiff.

Inspector Gadget

This movie starred Matthew Brodrick as Inspector Gadget and a whole list of other actors that I've never heard of. This movie tanked at the box office and inspired a straight to video sequal. Inspector Gadget was a cartoon that was practically created for my generation of kids or younger and what the hell happened here? Disney took a perfectly good character as Inspector Gadget and turned it into a horrible box office bomb. Don't get me wrong. I like Matthew Brodrick just not as Inspector Gadget.

If I can say but one thing about this movie it's this. Don't waste your money on the movie DVDs and take your time to find the cartoon DVD box set. It will be worth your while to save your money for that one thing.

Ladies and gents there will probably be more live action flicks based on animation and TV shows of the past but these are some of the worst.

Seems like you were reaching for a few of these. I can agree on most of them, but TMNT I and II? Every Batman movie?
Sikkinixx Posted 1 year 7 days ago
Your bat shit crazy. Batman Begins was a fantastic reboot and the TMNT movies were great. They bring me back to my child hood. You are obviously not a movie critic because your reviews lack any and all substance. Sorry.....thumbs way down.

THIS IS DIRECTED AT THE PEOPLE WHO SAID THINGS LIKE THIS IN THE COMMENTS SECTION NOT THE ARTICLE ITSELF

you do not make fun of Tim Burton!!!! I personally know him and he's an amazing person

batman begins was a good movie????? should have been "Batgirl smokes a cigar and chokes her lines.."
the real batman did not wear lipstick and sound like he just smoked a whole carton of cigarettes!

After reading Knite's article, I had to see this thing for myself. I think the rating for this article suits it really well. This piece is just meant to piss everyone off without any real evidence. I do agree with some of the content (D&D, Catwoman, and Batman & Robin), but it's not because of what Celeste has written. Some of the facts are quite sketchy. Batgirl was in B&R, not Forever.

I was lucky to bare witness to Celeste's demise on this site, and felt bad for the guy/girl. The Spears article was an okay article, but it seems that it was the final straw that broke the camel's back. And I'm sure the reaction from the RetroJunkies about this article was the heaviest straw of them all. I'm talking log sized.
    miko185 Posted 4 years 3 months ago
This guy is a moron...Most of these are classics and the rest are at least decent. I agree there were some live action movies based off of cartoons that should have never been made...I'll give you Inspector Gadget and Dungeons and Dragons...but the turtle movies were actually better than some of the cartoon episodes (some being the keyword) and the Batman movies were incredible....How did the webmaster of this site allow such an attack on what makes this site so great?!? Thats like the Pope allowing an attack on the Vatican!!
unsocialtripsix Posted 4 years 5 months ago
I just gotta say... Calling Batman Begins the worst Bat-movie ever made is like saying Kenneth Brangnah knows nothing about Shakespeare.
udontknowjack Posted 4 years 5 months ago
Blasphemy! It's Clark Kent, not Clarke Kent. And when I think of actors it isn't Dean Cain in the Romantic Comedy Lois and Clark. Or Tom Welling in Smallville or what should be called: that show that has nothing to do with the original comics because the writers never read any Superman comics to begin with.
udontknowjack Posted 4 years 5 months ago
A negative 41? Good grief. Hey Knites, I'm sure Celeste will take your egotistical comments to heart.
grindcore fan Posted 4 years 5 months ago
I disagree with 85% of this article. I liked the old TMNT and Batman movies. The rest, I don't even give a shit about.
gustogummi Posted 4 years 5 months ago
This article completely fails at life.
dalmatianlover Posted 4 years 7 months ago
Knites is right. This article does have the lowest score on the entire site.
    mlw1984 Posted 4 years 9 months ago
This article is pure garbage. I enjoyed the first 2 TMNT movies, how could you not like them? They were following the storylines of the original comics while using some elements from the cartoon. I enjoyed the Batman movies with the expection of Batman and Robin because I thought it was horrible.

Catwoman never had a cartoon of her own.

This article also lacks proper research, this is all just YOUR opinion on the movies. Please don't speak for everyone else.

    Thumbs down all the way.
zomnificent Posted 4 years 10 months ago
I'll agree with the general consensus. I'm especially puzzled why you hated Batman Begins. It was awesome. It was the best superhero movie yet.

As far as TMNT, the first movie was amazing and it still holds up. I was just watching it yesterday - the costumes look amazing, the ninja code is very developed, and the characters, especially Raphael, are great. It's far beyond a cheesy camp movie that boys just liked because they were boys - it is a great movie, period.
MtLaStella Posted 4 years 11 months ago
I had to read this and see why it scores in the negatives thirties. I can sorta see why. First off, your grammar sucks. Second, the first two Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movies were awesome. You're nuts to grow up during that time and think otherwise. Also, Bat Girl was not in "Batman Forever", she was in "Batman & Robin". Wow...
    ChokerZ99 Posted 5 years 1 month ago
i like how you hyphenated "Bat-Man" while the movie poster right above it shows "Batman". That gave me quite the chuckle seeing "Bat-Man" that many times in your article.
Spongeroks Posted 5 years 4 months ago
I can't beleive you forgot Supergirl.
Spongeroks Posted 5 years 6 months ago
I gave this a thumbs down months ago, but now I'm going to respond.
You completely suck at doing research, batgirl was in Batman & Robin, and it's called Superman Returns. Superman Returns, Batman Begins, TMNT1/2, and Batman Returns were good, you can't seriously choose Fantastic Four, X-Men 3, and Spiderman 3 over those.
Nurdeth Posted 5 years 6 months ago
I agree with most of this, but NOT with Batman Begins. Sure, I grew up on the cartoons, and never did read the Comic Books, but it does the dark, moody, and mature content a service with the first in the soon-to-be redone series.
    NickelodeonFan97 Posted 5 years 8 months ago
The IG movie was actually what made production company Caravan Pictures, which made great stuff like Angels in the Outfield and Heavyweights, go defunct. Tells you how bad it was.

But most of the other ones were good!
    NickelodeonFan97 Posted 5 years 10 months ago

you relly dont now how to do real cool articals what are a evil man who hates kids movies i hate you

You know most of those were good. That's why this is bad.
    snkreed99 Posted 6 years 2 months ago
I know it is probably too late for anyone to read this, but Dolph Lundgren was already an actor when this movie was made. He was the russian in rocky IV.
RobbyJFox Posted 6 years 3 months ago
hay now the tmnt movies where sweet at the time, come on they even had vanilla ice rap with them at the end lol.
    Xe-A-Thoul Posted 6 years 5 months ago
Heh heh... I feel sorry for Celeste. We all have our own opinions about movies. However, I must say this.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but Turtles in Time was a video game, not a movie. I had the get that out.

Improve on your writing, grammar, and maybe put a little more research into your work. That is how RetroJunk articles become sucessful like Billy Mitchell playing Pac-Man.
    TV1985 Posted 6 years 5 months ago
I like the movie versions of M.o.t.U., T.M.N.T., Batman, Inspector Gadget, and D&D.
sakket Posted 6 years 5 months ago
I read the part about the D&D movie and wondered how likely it is that the writer has ever even played D&D.
then I skimmed through the writer's opinion of the Ninja Turtles movies and quickly pressed a low ranking.

((i agree with the inspector gadget part though))
    fragglerocker1020 Posted 6 years 5 months ago
    Wow that's just wow....
    ducktalesfan1977 Posted 6 years 5 months ago
I think you are all being a little too harsh on Celeste. Some of you sound like elementary students. Yes the article isn't the best but that doesn't mean some of you have to say things like "Kill yourself" or "dumb ass". Maybe she should do some more research and maybe the article would of been better, but calling her names isn't making you sound cool. Chill out.
Sokudo Ningyou Posted 6 years 5 months ago
I don't recall TMNT being a box office bomb, or even that bad, considering most of it was based on the original comic and not the childish cartoon. It's hardly the worse adaptation to hit theatres.

Plus, Tim Burton directed Batman and Batman Returns. He didn't continue the franchise because Warner Bros. figured people would spend more money if the movies were glitzy, crappy, and technicolour horrible, so they traded him for Joel Schumacher.
Byrd man Posted 6 years 5 months ago
I don't know what's more pathetic, the lack of research in this artcle or the abundance of useless criticims and rantings of how completely wrong the writer is in his or her opinions. I sincerely hope none of you lost any sleep over not liking this article. Opinions should not be uniform and articles shouldn't reflect the ideas shared by the anticipating majority, granted this article could have used more meat and research, but to call the author a "retard" or rehashing the same "you're so wrong" that the last person posted reflects more poorly on the site than the article itself. Pretty please let's all try really hard to be polite in our criticisms and thoughtful in our posts shall we?
mogie Posted 6 years 5 months ago
    here here.
SkaDan Posted 6 years 5 months ago
okay, i support individual thinking but, you have no real reason behind your opinion. just random bashing just out of anger and no real 'brainstorming' behind what your typing. Batman Returns was a decent movie it was well written, had decent dialouge and pretty good acting and thats more than what you would expect from a Super Hero flick, its Batman Forever and Batman and Robin that sucked, and Batgirl wasnt in Batman Forever like you stated in the article. and im gonna also have to disagree with you on the first Turtles film, that was actually a decent somewhat dark adaption, i mean, again, its more than what you'd expect from a movie about humanoid turtles fighting crime. but i'll stand with you on everything else. i just disagree with Batman Returns, Ninja Turtles, and Superman Returns. (if you wanna see a bad Superman movie, get Superman 3 and Superman 4.)
mogie Posted 6 years 5 months ago
I can't agree 100% with this rant. However, as a D&D player of the 80's D&D the movie did leave alot of room for making it better. Also, Batman wasn't so bad. After the 2nd one, it was over. You need big name super villains to fight. Danny is great but not as a villain.
Nostalgiascape Posted 6 years 5 months ago
Superman Returns was very well made.
    starkiller80 Posted 6 years 5 months ago
The first two Ninja Turtle movies were great and captivating to children, which was the whole point of there existance, beyond making money for the studio. That being said, plus the fact that many adults still love to see those movies now and then for sheer childhood joy it reminds them of, those movies have served their purpose well... You obviously have a lack of research when compiling your facts (or lack of) in this article... Who is Robbie Rist anyway? You failed to mention the great 80's actor Corey Feldman as the voice of Donatello... While I will agree that Ninja Turtles III was a low budget, half hearted attempt at a third film, it was never titled "Turtles in Time." Turtles in Time was a video game for the Super Nintendo.

Animation to Live Action 3 I meant.
dg Posted 6 years 5 months ago
With the success of this article I wonder if Celeste will do Animation to Live Action 2.They say the more sequels the worse they get but Im not sure thats possible in this case but you never know lol.
Benesato Posted 6 years 5 months ago
First; a general observation. It takes a certain degree of talent and literary charisma to make a whiny, gripe article interesting. Some writers can pull it off, but most should not try. Just like some comedians can do a whole "so what's the deal with...?" routine and make us laugh, while most people would just come across as formulaic and derivative.

"Sorry, kid. You [ain't] got the gift"

Batman...yep, everyone said it. I don't think there are too many objective ways in which Batman Begins could be criticised. Just a matter of curiosity...did anyone notice that Batmans nose-piece in Batman Begins always seems to be slightly askew? I wonder if that was a subtle attempt to recreate the triangular profile of the nose from the comics/cartoons?

    As for Dolph Lundgren:

"...he wasn't even an actor but an Engineering student."
"...I'll never know but hiring an engineering student...."
    "Stick to engineering...."

We get the point - all three times - he was a (Chemical) Engineering student. His acting abilities aside (he acted in at least 2 roles before Masters of the Universe), he was an accomplished martial artist, and physically well suited to the role. Perhaps he wasn't ideal, but he was certainly well-suited to the role in many ways.

The history behind why Halle Berry played Catwoman is a long story, so I won't go into it, but if it's true then I respect her for sticking to her guns. But I'm not sure why referring to her as "the talented african american actress that she is" was necessary. Call me politically incorrect, but what the frag does "african american" have to do with anything? Why does her racial heritage matter?

How about "the talented actress that she is". Now doesn't that make the point just as well without trying to winning brownie points for political correctness?

Incidentally, being proper nouns, 'African' and 'American' are spelt with capital letters. The literacy standards of many of the authors of such articles may often be...dubious...but I there's a point where it becomes ridiculous. That long, funny-looking button with "Shift" written on it. Try using it!

As for why the Dungeons & Dragons movie was made. It was released at about the same time that the Dungeons & Dragons version 3.0 books were released, and the Dungeons & Dragons roleplaying system underwent a great revival. It's merely conjecture, but I think it was made as an attempt to demystify Dungeons & Dragons among the broader community with the aim of improving sales and turning Dungeons & Dragons into a lucrative, multi-platform franchise - something akin to Harry Potter. As a roleplayer, I'm glad the movie sucked eggs. I don't know if I could cope with primary school kids packing their 'Dungeons & Dragons' pencil cases into their 'Dungeons & Dragons' backpacks. :)

Glad I got that off my chest.

    Benesato.

Do yourself a favor and pick up a copy of "Article Writing for Dummies", because this shit is pathetic.
Ciara Aislinn Posted 6 years 5 months ago
I completely agree with the above comment; Batman Begins was definitely closest to the original tenor of the comic books. After a series of movies in which Batman becomes increasingly asinine with each new role, Batman Begins is a welcome change. Also, as a childhood fan of TMNT I have to say I loved the first movie.
    exleper24 Posted 6 years 5 months ago
Are you serious? I know the quality of a movie is subjective matter, but how can you call "Batman Begins" the worst of them all???? "Batman Begins" stayed truest to the tone of the comic books, was the best cast/acted movie, and was the only real incarnation of Batman to avoid any sort of campy treatment.

And while I agree with you on a lot of choices (Masters of the Universe, D&D) you have to provide better reasoning then just saying "What were they thinking?"

And can we just say this paragraph blows:

At least then the acting in this movie would have been consistant with the acting in the previous two movies."

    A) because I can't begin to make sense of it, and B) because Tim Burton left the franchise after "Returns" and Joel Schumacher (spelling?) took over.

Ugh--I hate sounding like a douchebag but I was kind of looking forward to reading this one.

    I'll go away now.
bicostp Posted 6 years 5 months ago
I have to disagree with this article:

Batman Forever and Superman Returns were good movies.

At least the CGI hulk was a much better representation of the cartoon than the bodybuilder they got to do the live action TV series.

Please try to use proper spelling and grammar. This article was very tough to read.
Selbdog Posted 6 years 5 months ago
I agree with you on Masters of the Universe. Being a fan of the tv series. I was apalled that Orko was missing from the movie. Frank Langlia aka Soromon the white LOTR was great as Skeletor as was Meg Foster as Evil Lynn. Dolph Laundron looked the part but hisvoice should have been dubbed. This probably should have been animated instead of live action. Watch Secret of The Sword instead.
I hated dungeons and dragons. I liked the first TMNT movie hated the next 2 TMNT movies. Loved the Batman Movies except for Batman Forever. Val KIlmer as Batman Jim Carey as Riddler and what were they thinking with Nicole Kidman as Dr.Chase Mariddion. The scrip sucked the only redeaming performance was Tommy Lee Jones as Two-Face. I thought Arnold as Mr.Freeze was great and funny far cry better than the hacks who played the character on the 60's Tv show.
The rest could careless about. Haven't seen Superman Returns yet.
retroboy Posted 6 years 5 months ago
How could you dis on Superman Returns? I thought it was pretty awesome. A major difference in this movie compared to the movies that starred Christopher Reeve was that you could hardly even notice how they did the special effects. As for Batman Returns, Tim Burton has never made a flop movie and this one isn't one either. It was much better then the first because of the way they juiced up the Batmobile and gave the Dark Knight newer weapons.
Sayer Posted 6 years 5 months ago
It seems to me just as Kyller Koala stated, this is not so much an "article" as it is an excuse to scream "I hate these movies!" and ask rhetorical questions over the course of a few screens.
Daikun Posted 6 years 6 months ago
"The Bat-Man series of movies became horrible after Michael Keaton left."

And yet you criticized Batman Returns (featuring Michael Keaton as the Bat) anyway. Note the contradiction.
swift heart Posted 6 years 6 months ago
for the most part im on your side most of those should never have been made at the lest should have been done as a cartoon to clean up some of its crapyness and as for inspector gadget the movie was crap no buts about it but im lucky all i have to do is turn on the tv so watch the cartoons^_^
gusto Posted 6 years 6 months ago
Michelle Pfiffer was a way better catwoman than Halle Berry simply because she gave the character a darker edgier feel, as is also why I like Tim Burton, he's good at directing movies in such a way to give them that somewhat morbid quality. As for Batman begins, it was the medicine this franchise needed after those two box office flops before it. Only thing about batman begins is it didn't go into enough depth because there were too many actors and characters to fill the time.
TheOutlaw Posted 6 years 6 months ago
You are so wrong about Batman Begins.
chokeslam Posted 6 years 6 months ago
I'm not about to defend his acting abilities but Dolf Lundgren did have some previous acting experience. He stared as Ivan Draco in Rocky IV. So they didn't exactly pick some random engineering student. Not that that detract from how horrible the movie is.
kaguth Posted 6 years 6 months ago
TMNT 1 was awesome! I will physically fight anyone who doesn't think so. It was based on the comic more so than the cartoon (Yes, it was a comic first). The fact that you couldn't tell the difference between the crappyness of the last two and the awesomeness of the first means you probaby aren't a TMNT fan to begin with. BTW a few good actors in the first one: Elias Koteas, Sam Rockwell, Cory Feldman (he was good in The Goonies/Stand By Me!!).
shiroihikari Posted 6 years 6 months ago
I hope to God that this article is supposed to be some kind of sick joke, otherwise I've lost a little bit more faith in the human race. :\

u forgot the streer fighter movie. I do think they need to make a Thunder Cats movie though with The Rock as lion-O Ving Rhames as Panthro, Charlene Theron and Cheetarah, George Clooney as Tigra and a couple of talented unknowns and Wild E Kitt and Katt.

This was just career suicide for everyone who was involved with this horrible attrocity of a live-action flick.
    ====

Tell that to Courtney Cox. She seems to have done pretty well since she appeared in the movie.

Additionally, I think you're wrong about several of the movies you listed.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles was really good (the first one, anyway). It was cheesy and fun, and better than expected.

Batman was awesome when it came out. How can you not like Jack Nicholson as the joker? Michelle Pfieffer was an excellent Catwoman in Batman Returns...probably the only thing about that movie most people liked.

Batman Begins is probably the best Batman movie ever made. What a way to reimagine that series.

Dungeons & Dragons, while not the best movie, wasn't even based on the cartoon AT ALL. It was based on the roleplaying game. They only share the same name due to the origin.

How can he say that about the first 2 TNMT movies.Me and my sister always liked watching the cartoon and we liked the movie also.So what if the effects and stuff are primitave to todays standards it was good effert at making a live action movie for the time(and its way better then a complete 3D movie that doesnt even have any real people or locations in it)and there was also the facted that they sayed things like damn in the first movie which made it cool to which today all there allawed to say is what the shell and other cencored crap like that. The classic TMNT show, movies, comics, toy, and games, are all classic franchises so stop talking bad about them or us fans will get really pisted off.
    Units1019 Posted 6 years 6 months ago
TMNT?? Granted 3 was a bit odd. But the first one and Secret of the Ooze are classics IMO.

MoTU does butcher the source material abit. But I can honestly say I enjoyed it.

Batman-Batman Forever were awesome to pretty good. BnR should have not been made. I agree on that

Superman Returns was a good movie contrary to popular belief.

The rest, I don't think I have seen before
Arklier Posted 6 years 6 months ago
Gonna break this down selection by selection here.

1.) He-Man. I have to agree with this one. I was a huge MotU fan as a kid (still am to some degree) but I can't really say much good about it other than I might like it more if it wasn't supposed to be MotU. Instead of being set in the cartoon Eternia that everyone was familiar with, this takes place mostly on Earth with two of the most annoying children I've ever seen in a movie. I've read somewhere that the reason for the major differences (particularly in character appearance) was that the studio was able to get the license for the backstory and the appearances of the Mattel created characters, but not for the Filmation designed characters like the Sorceress. That's why she looks so different.

2.) Dungeons & Dragons. I haven't seen this movie, but that's on purpose. Still, I don't think you can really say the movie was based off of the cartoon. They were based on the same source material, that's it. It's like saying The Lion King was based off Strange Brew when they were both based on Shakespeare's Hamlet.

3.) TMNT. As stated elsewhere, these movies were based off on the Mirage comic books, though the second leaned more heavily towards the cartoon. The plot from the first movie was taken almost entirely from the comic. It was Jim Henson's last major film project, and up until that time, arguably the height of anamatronic puppetry. CGI didn't really come into films in a big way until Jurassic Park 3 years later. I personally like these films, but it's been awhile since I've seen them. Color me weird, but I actually liked TMNT3.

4.) Bat-Man[sic]. I'm not a really big Batman fan, though I have seen Batman Forever way back when it was in theaters. If I'd seen any of the previous ones, I might think differently about it. IMHO, Jim Carrey was perfect to play the Riddler, though the rest of the film's plot needed work. Two-Face also didn't get enough screen time. The one thing that I can say that I liked about Batman Forever (and Batman & Robin) is that it actually had just that. Robin. Six Batman films and only two with Robin. How can you have Batman and not Robin? It's like having a sandwich with just bread. Now, I can sort of forgive Batman and Batman Begins for not having him, since they were more or less based on Batman's origin story and he wasn't around in the first few issues, but come on... He was around before the Penguin AND the Joker. As for Catwoman, I can't say much about the movie since I haven't seen the ones with her in them.

4.) Hulk. Haven't seen it. I don't really care for the character one way or the other, or the way they made him look in the movie. It's not that I like the Lou Ferrigno look, it's just that in the recent movie they made him look like a big ass brick wall with a pin head. I would have much preferred the way he looked in the old Marvel Productions Incredible Hulk cartoon and the original comics.

5.) Super Man the Return[sic]. Another one I haven't seen, but how are we supposed to respect the opinion of someone who couldn't even get the title of the damn movie right? Even with Lois Lane having a kid, it still couldn't be worse than Superman IV.

6.) Inspector Gadget. Again, I haven't seen it on purpose for several reasons. I don't want to spoil my childhood memories of Dr. Claw by giving him a face. They should have stuck with the cartoon portrayal of the character. Same with Brain. CGI was well developed at the point that this film came out, and with all the other CGI in it, there really wasn't any excuse not to make Brain like he was in the cartoon. They couldn't even get Gadget's trademark "Wowsers!" phrase right. A shame all around.

Eh, this turned out longer than I thought it would.

I think more than anything this was a troll-posting moment to get everyone pissed off. Cause if you noticed he/she/it hasn't said anything since it was posted up...

Ummm, Don't we actually have a guy on this site named Roadkill?
    dr.maikel Posted 6 years 6 months ago
Batman Superman The hulk And the Turtles should not be in this. Those all started out as comic and should be seen as comic movies not Cartoon movies.
IkeAurion Posted 6 years 6 months ago
Whoa you're really not kind with these movies.

For TMNT 1, I remember as a kid having so much fun watching this movie that I always wanted to rent it when I saw it at the video-club. So a movie that entertained me this much could not have been that bad....

For D&D, just a correction, the movie was based on the game and not on the cartoon.

Okay when I saw your critics for Batman, I seached for the line where you would write you were joking. There wasn't. The first two were classics and for Jim Carrey as the riddler, even though the movie sucks, I still believe he mae a great job. And Batman Begins was so cool, how can someone not like it???

Brandon Routh made a great job as Superman. He could not put too much feeling, that's the way the superhero is: always strong.

And finally for Inspector Gadget, I'll repeat the same argument as for TMNT: I enjoyed so much as a kid that I don't think it was that bad for a kid's movie.

Inspector Gadget movie was crap.I think the girl should have been alot younger in it which would have worked better. The first TMNT movie was the best and kicked ass out of the three, any one knows that. The bit that confuses me about the article and maybe Im wrong but wasnt dungens and dragon based on the computer game and not the cartoon. The cartoon was about kids and the game was about the castle and a wommen and man enteraning it.It has traps left right and center, good game though for PS1.He-man was great every one should like it becuase its so entataining even if it wasnt rerally close to the cartoon.

    phenomenal1 Posted 6 years 6 months ago
I agree with Masters of the Universe it was a bad choice to make it a movie but they did do a good job to make Dolph Lundren as He-Man, as far as Dungeons and Dragons go it was another bad move, then we come to TMNT series i've seen all 3 movies and they are good. the batman series i like the first 2 then the others sucked. The Hulk movie it tanked big time but i still liked it, I've never seen Superman the return yet but i'm sure it will not disappoint me, and now on to Inspector Gadget, I liked the first movie cuz they made a good move to cast Matthew Broderick as Inspector Gadget but y didn't they keep him on to play him in the sequel the 2nd one sucked. and as far as Power Rangers goes It Was Great they didn't stray away from nothin and kept the same cast as the show Excellent Movie, TY Fox kids for providing the show.
SSJ Jup81 Posted 6 years 6 months ago
Oh, yeah, just to comment on Bat Girl...doesn't matter to me which looked better, at least Alicia Silverstone could actually fight. All Yvonne Craig did was do that prissy little kick of hers. lol
SSJ Jup81 Posted 6 years 6 months ago
Most of what you put up there, I actually liked: TMNT movies (minus 3), Batman movies (although I liked the first two best because of how dark they were), and Dungeons & Dragons.

The other movies I can't comment on because I've never seen them.

You are entitled to your opinion, though...
    Daniel_BMS Posted 6 years 6 months ago
You have no taste. If you didn't like the first TMNT movie, fine. But you can't diss the genius of Tim Burton's Batman Returns. That movie kicked so much ass and reminded everybody of th beauty of the film making.
    Captain-N Posted 6 years 6 months ago
    Are you nuts Celeste?

Batman Begins is an excellent movie by any means. The two Tim Burton Batmans were not perhaps as faithful to the whole Batman mythos but interesting gothic fantasy films in their own right... And you DIDNT like Michelle Pfeiffer as Catwoman...? Okay, she's sorta just one of the female action icons of the nineties.

And as a devoted Turtle fan, I say the first movie is an excellent representation of our four heroes, and a complete labour of love in general. True, the sequels stunk, but the first is a classic me and my brothers still enjoy.

I wouldnt completely bash "The Hulk" either. The film is messy, I agree, but its still very ambitious and very different from other action films. It doesnt really know what it wants to be, but some of the stuff it pulls of is brilliant. Even though its a very flawed film. Its interesting in its artistic achievements.

And you didnt like Superman Returns either... What, not enough action for you? Didnt really try to understand what the themes of Superman is all about? Same old, same old... i take it you didnt like the first Superman film either?

Talk about being out of tough... What do you consider being good superhero movies then? PowerRangers the movie...? Elektra...?

Since you didnt bring up either Daredevil, Spawn: The movie, The Punisher or Fantastic Four, you must think that those are superior to Batman Begins and Superman Returns.... Interesting.

Im sorry, the comments below all agree upon you being wrong. But thats just our personal opinions of course. Enjoy being part of an exclusive minority.
bdenz Posted 6 years 6 months ago
While I agree with most of the comments above, I have some other incites to add. Masters of the Universe was undoubtably campy, but on the plus side, it did feature a young, pre Friends Courtney Cox.

TMNT 1 was fabulous when it came out and still carries lots of sentimental value for me.

Batman 3 and 4 were terrible and made me want to wretch.

The only real down side to most cartoon/comics turned movie, is the rampant fan reaction (see 2007s Transformers film). The problem is that cartoon and comics are created for kids (don't crucify me just yet) and the select collectors. Movie companies have to create these feature films to appeal to the masses. I'll agree that TMNT 2 and 3 are vomit on film, and D&D was a laughable attempt at a niche genre. Batman Begins went right back to BM's (Hee hee bowel movement) roots. Spine snapping bad guy whupping, While the X-men films are good when drunk fare at best (The same thing that happens to everything else *cring*). Everyone is way to eager to jump on the Hulk bashing bandwagon, but you know what? Hulk was a good movie based on the COMICS! not the TV series. Too many people were saying "Where's Lou?" and "Why isn't he saying the same lines from the TV show?". It's like people just want to watch the cartoons, or read the comics, or watch the show. I have a simple solution then, watch the shows, read the comics or watch the cartoons. Nuff Said.
TommyDay Posted 6 years 6 months ago
I feel sorry for you if you think Batman Begins is one of the worst movies of all time. Its the best superhero movie ever put on the screen, and it was a damn near perfect movie as far as doing exactly what it needed to.

Oh and the first TMNT movie is actually pretty good. You should try watching some things before you review them.
    Shironu_Akaineko Posted 6 years 6 months ago
I just have one thing to say.
TMNT 1 was very well made, good acting, and as for the fighting, strap a 100 pounds weight to your back and try to Bruce Lee your way around the house.
    ADH_adh Posted 6 years 6 months ago
And you know what's worst? Guys that will call any cartoon/comics to film project a horrible mistake. You're like an AFOL telling that BIONICLE are not Legos.
In my opinion (and not only mine, as I have already learned) the first two Batman movies were better than great. Next ones were a bit worse, and Batman Begins wasn't liked, because it refreshed the whole story - now that's ridicolous! Batman is almost 70, you would like to see him going with the same story that he had in 1938 and place it today?!
About TMNT - I have to confess, that I saw only the third one. Though it wasn't hooray great, I liked it. If the first one's much better I'll do my best to get a copy of it. Remeber that at the time Turtles were more know as a funny cartoon, not a badass comic.

If you're looking for some well-researched reasons behind Batman and Robin's, and Catwoman's existence (the movies, I mean). Check out my Batman/Superman article on this site. http://www.retrojunk.com/details_articles/929/

And, I'm sorry, but Batman Begins is a superb movie. Anyone who thinks otherwise is not a Batfan. Sorry. Celeste, this is yet another low score you've achieved on this site. I suggest examining some of the five star articles on this site and their comments to see what made them work so you can emulate them. I'm pleased to see you put in the effort to contribute. I just wish you would think a little more before you write. Cheers for trying, but I look forward to something with a little more thought in it. If your looking for a Beta reader before you submit, I'd be willing to help you out. Good luck reaching for more stars than two or three. Feel free to check out my works too.

funny, i dont know anyone my age who DIDNT see TMNT as a kid. and calling batman begins worse than batman and robin is rediculous. there is probably a couple hundered thousand people (at least) who would disagree with you on that one seeing as how batman and robin is considered by a majority as one of the worst movies ever. and there are other problems in this article that i am not gonna get into to save time, but dude, all i can say is do your research.
    Luigi719 Posted 6 years 6 months ago
1st. the TMNT movies were good expect the 3rd.
2nd.Batman was good, but i did not like george clooney
3rd.i agree and the catwoman and hulk those movies were not up to par at best
Garo Posted 6 years 6 months ago
First of all, I have to take exception to your Batman Begins bashing. If you just didn't like it, fine...but your insinuation that it's the worst of them all, worse than Batman & Robin even, comes off as absolutely ludicrous to me. If you hated Batman Begins, and also all the other Batman movies, then I can only wonder what exactly it is you want out of a Batman movie.

Also...Batgirl was in Batman & Robin, NOT Batman Forever.
    Score:
    -62
