Underrated Superheros.

Mr. Tron takes a look at underrated super heroes. Today: The SilverHawks.

Wings of silver. Nerves of steel. Silverhawks.

In this writers own humble opinion, The Silverhawks ranks as one of the most underrated cartoons of the 80s. It had everything that a young child at the time would want. Action, adventure, a futuristic setting. Still, it seemed to be underrated when people talk about cartoons from the 80s. Silverhawks was made py the same company that made another underrated cartoon, Thunder Cats. It also stared some of the smae voices. Let's have a look at the main cast of SilverHawks. Starting with the leader.

Cap. Johnathan Quick. AKA Quicksilver. Former head of Interplanetary Force H, Leader of The Silverhawks.

Bluegrass. Second in command, pilot of The SilverHawks ship, The Miraj. Bluegrass, unlike the other Silverhawks, has no wings. His weapon is Hot Licks a sonic blasting guitar.

Stargazer. A curt commander who first requested help in the galaxy of Limbo, prompting the Interplanetary Control Force to create and release the Silverhawks.

The twins. Emily and Will Heart. AKA Steelhart and Steelwill. Technicians and designers, who are both as strong as steel. The only members of the group who had replacement steel hearts during their mechanical alterations.

From The Planet Of The Mimes, The Copper Kid. A mathematical genius who communicates through a complex system of tones.

These six comprised The Silverhawks. Brought in by Stargazer to stop Mon*Star and his Intergalactic Mob.

Mon*Star. Intergalactic mob boss. With the power of the moon, he becomes armored.

Yessman. Mon*Star's...Yesman. Yessman is a lackey to the highest power.

Buzzsaw. The Walking Vegimatic. The saws on his arms came loose to hack up a space taxi.

What made the Silverhawks great was it was everything that kids love. It had action, adventure, the shows had a great story, and at the end. The Copper Kid would learn a lesson. I loved the Silverhawks when I was a kid. Unfortunately, I always felt that they where underrated under other heroes like G.I. Joe, Voltron, The Transfromers and The Real Ghostbusters. The Silverhawks toy line was one of the best ever. Buzzsaw was one of the coolest figures ever.

So you can imagine my delight when I heard that Silverhawks was coming out on DVD.

Silverhawks. Underrated. But one of the best cartoons of the 1980s.

dude i loved thundercats and yes, this was a rip off and no, not as good. but it was still really cool. buzzsaw definately one of the coolest toys ever. and bluegrass with his guitar was pretty bad ass too. i mean, it wasn't as great as thundercats but still really good
Hiro Posted 5 years 6 months ago
Oh no, it's not that I outgrew animation. It's just that the show was bad and it was a rip-off of Thundercats which wasn't all that great either.
    ducktalesfan1977 Posted 5 years 7 months ago
All of you saying that the cartoon sucked have never watched it or just outgrew animation. I loved this show when I was 9 years old and had all of the toys (still had my Buzzsaw figure.)

Far out, a SliverHawks DVD set! man, I cannot wait to see that come out.
Straycubone Posted 5 years 7 months ago
    This cartoon was actually terrible.
Hiro Posted 5 years 7 months ago
No offense, but this cartoon sucked. It was nothing more than a clone of Thundercats, which isn't that great either. Funny thing was it was made by the same company.
Loook Posted 5 years 7 months ago
    I liked Bionic 6 better.
Attila Posted 5 years 7 months ago
    Looks groovalishious.
    ChokerZ99 Posted 5 years 7 months ago
heck yeah! buzzsaw was awesome. of all my toys, there is a certain few that i could always bring out that would make the other kids jealous.
silverhawks = thundercats (except they're hawks, and they fight more robots)

I gotta agree with public opinion on this one I'm afraid. As obsessed as I was (ok, still am) with 80's generation heros I just never could get into the Silver Hawks. It did have everything that made 80's gen heros great, it was kind of like Thundercats meets Transformers. But that's just the problem, this show came out on the tail end of the 80's gen era and so it had all been done before. Not to mention that the guy in the cowboy had and the kid from the "Planet of the Mimes" were just a bit too cheezy for my tastes (Planet of the Mines? wtf?). I will have to admit that Mon*Star was a cool villan, but considering that I didn't care much for the heros it left me rooting for Mon*Star to win. So in conclusion I have to disagree, Silver Hawks wasn't under rated, it just wasn't up to snuff with the other 80's cartoons.

This cartoon was awesome, I remember watching it during high school. One of the last decent cartoons before the lame ass Nickelodeon cartoons came.

TALLY HO! (I think that's correct)
perceptor Posted 5 years 8 months ago
I did like this cartoon as a kid, although I can't recall the quality of the writing enough to comment. I do remember being a bit freaked out by the Silverhawks being cyborgs, in the same way the Darth Vader and the Centurions' Doc Terror and Hacker freaked me out!

Personally, I still remember the silverhawks, it was a great show, classic 80's. Not something I would look at now and think that it would last more than 2 seasons, but that's the 80's, there were so many good shows around that only a few really became a "Stand out" series
Edymnion Posted 5 years 8 months ago
I'm sorry, I have to dissagree.

While I used to think Silverhawks was one of the best old shows, a few years ago I found a VHS of it at Blockbusters and immediantly rented it.

    What a mistake.

It wasn't cool, it wasn't awesome, it was a bad chicago police drama set in outter space. The concept was incredible, the artwork was top notch, the way it was handled was just abysmal.

It would be great if they remade this and basically started over from scratch, but as is, this one is better left in the dim memories of the past.
darthmunk Posted 5 years 8 months ago
I agree completely. What about Captain Planet?
meylog Posted 5 years 8 months ago
Instant classic this was a cery good show along with thundercats, mask, bravestarr, mazinger and g-force. Live on 80's cartoons live on.....

Thundercats was received with a lot of praise initially, and more recently with the 4 DVD box sets. Every episode has now been released on DVD due to successful sales. Silverhawks on the other hand was released on DVD in 2006, but only to receive luke warm sales. Warner Bros. released the first 22 episodes in a box set, to ride on the coat tails of the successful sales of Thundercats. Unfortunately Only one box has been released, and it doesn't look as if any more are coming out.
I didn't supply this info to put down your article, just giving info from one Silverhawks fan to another. Good article overall, it gets my thumbs up. You can get the box set for a decent price on Amazon. At one point I saw it fetch over $200 on ebay.

I only remember Silverhawks just a little bit.
EightiesCrazy Posted 5 years 8 months ago
Oh yes I remember this cartoon. They would do this cool hand over face swiping motion just before battle and viola! A Boba Fett type mask would appear. I also recall their signature cry, "TALLY-HOOO!" Kinda' like Lion O's own "HOOO!" And their theme was cool too. The way the singer sang Silver Hawks in a high pitched voice as a Hawk screamed out in the background. Great show but Copper Kid came off like a low budget version of that odd little dude who also spoke in tongues from Battle of the Planets. I'm 38 and, my wife and I are planning to start a family next year. I plan to but cartoons like this, Flash Gordon, The Mighty Orbots, Rickety Rocket etc. for the little rug rat so he OR she can experience what REAL cartoons are like.

Actually, Silverhawks was developed by Rankin/Bass to serve as a space-bound equivalent to their more popular series, ThunderCats. So, I'm not sure Thundercats was so underrated. Then again it was never aired where I lived, so, perhaps, it was.

But then, of course, there is this bit of news:

It was announced on June 5, 2007, that Warner Bros. is making a CGI-animated feature film of Thundercats. The script has been written by Paul Sopocy and will be produced by Spring Creek Productions. No release date has yet been confirmed.

So, perhaps I was right the first time and Thudercats wasn't so underatted after all.

Hmmm. Round and Round we go...

    Thanks for the read, MrTron.

I used to love this show. It one of my favorite ever.
aprilsnider Posted 5 years 8 months ago
I found the very first SilverHawks on VHS when Blockbuster was gong to DVD only. I got it for 2 dollars and I still enjoy watching it.
MrTron Posted 5 years 8 months ago
And to think, I had this article just sitting around. :)
cquinniey Posted 5 years 8 months ago
Great article! I can't wait to get my hands on that dvd box set. I think Fangarius was thinking about the G-Force/Battle of the Planets crossover with the Thundercats
SenTora Posted 5 years 8 months ago
Actually, there never was a Thundercats - Silverhawks Crossover. If they did, it was probably in the comic series. Now there was a Voltron Vehicle & Lion Crossover. But never T-Cats & S-Hawks.
Fangarius Posted 5 years 8 months ago
Yes, the Starhawks were rather underrated since it was a cool series, indeed. In fact, I did recall Rankin-Bass do a Thundercats/Silverhawks crossover once.

But I did like the show because of the outer space lessons the kid would learn at the end of each episode. And the fact the show was rather unique, sort of a blend of sci-fi and the Untouchables in a way.
Msneill Posted 5 years 8 months ago
Silverhawks were such a great show .. the images you used though kinda throw me off some. Makes them CG looking. Really doesn't do them justice.
IkeAurion Posted 5 years 8 months ago
    They look weird...
taciturnwes Posted 5 years 8 months ago
I remember Silverhawks, I had some of the action figures including the awesome Buzzsaw one, you could make the circular saws on his shoulders spin by opening and closing the mouth, ah memories...
Sayer Posted 6 years 4 months ago
    Tallyhawk! SKREEEEEEEEEEE!
    ducktalesfan1977 Posted 6 years 6 months ago
