SEGA vs SNES and my childhood

Console loyalty, a decision you make before you can barely speak, or a conscious decision?

As an American citizen, I grew up absorbing a hodgepodge of fads, trends, and one of the most fascinating nuances of our capitalist infrastructure, brand loyalty.

Yes that’s right, as a child born in the late 80’s, I spent most of my childhood in the 90’s. It almost seems as if the 80’s never happened, but the 90’s I remember quite well. Being raised by a television seemed commonplace enough, but the effect it had on me as a child only became apparent after a bit of reflection.

Yes, that’s right, even as a child names such as Coke and Pepsi slipped in to my head. McDonald’s or Burger King, DC or Marvel, but the one that seemed to impact me the most was Genesis or Super Nintendo.

I grew up with an unwavering loyalty to my Sega Genesis, even though throughout the 80’s we owned the original 8-bit Nintendo. The thing is, even though I beat Mario for my first time when I was three (without warp tunnels mind you), my cognitive growth really occurred over a solid decade of exposure to the joys of Sega Genesis, the essential arcade experience in your living room.

Yes, that bad blue blur, blasting ballistically became a brand I boasted *whew*.

Sonic always toppled Mario in my book. I grew up with no qualms about what I now know is considered a relatively unpopular opinion. I know the vague nuances, such as the Super Nintendo’s amazing sound versus the bleeps and blips of the Genesis, however Super Nintendo was less of an arcade console, thus shifting their priorities in the creation of the initial prototypes.

Recently, I helped a friend of mine move in to his apartment, when I noticed the Super Nintendo sitting in a corner gathering cobwebs and dust, I grabbed the once in a lifetime experience to take the free system home, controllers and all, and I began my quest to balance out the equilibrium in my nostalgic gaming experience.

Seeing as I already had a collection of 120 games for my Genesis, I realized I had some work to do in order to truly balance the scales. I became familiar with the endless licensing under Nintendo’s name that clearly outnumbered the licensed names under Sega’s belt.

Megaman, Donkey Kong, Samus, Chrono, Link, and yes, even Mario, all became familiar names to me, and as I played the many platformers, and RPG’s I realized my misconceptions were greatly overdrawn. “What a versatile machine!” I thought to myself.

At this point, I genuinely think Super Nintendo is a better system, HOWEVER, the Sega Genesis wins this close encounter by default. The fact of the matter is I still believe brand loyalty can speak volumes about someones personality, and I have pride that I grew up with the Sega experience.
The blood, the brawls; everyone knows Streets of Rage Two is the best side scrolling beat’em up of that era, Final Fight can’t touch that. Sonic One is also an incredible game (before all that awful anime crap ruined the series.. still decent games).

Golden Axe, Toejam and Earl, Vectorman, Kid Chameleon, no matter how you slice it, these systems are here for our entertainment, and having both of these systems, and what is now a growing collection of 60+ Super Nintendo games, provides an incredibly wide array of entertainment.

Hopefully I’ll have these systems for years to come, so I can show my kids the joy and simplicity of a three or four button controller and the heart and soul of a system as I blow in to yet another cartridge, eternally grateful for the radiant light shining from the TV screen on another Sunday morning.

well said Oldschoolgamer83 the console war between the SEGA GENESIS and the SUPER NINTENDO is one to remember, never again will there be one like it.....so let's cherish it as much as we can.

The greatest console battle ever waged, and I don't think there will ever be another like it. I was a huge Sega Genesis fan, and it seemed like my friends and I were split about it. We'd go back and forth all day on the playgrounds arguing about what was better.

Looking back on it today, we all agree one thing, the games of this time period were awesome, most classic games came from this gen. Today's games are awesome as well, but I don't think we'll ever see another battle like the one Sega and Nintendo had. Mainly because there's more players today and the directions each company want to go are radically different.

I have both systems and i gotta say that Nintendo games are ok but no match for sega in my opinion for example: the mortal combat series was released on both systems but was way better on sega; beacause sega had the balls to actually put blood in their games.

I was a hard core SNES fan growing up. Sega sold me with the then amazing opportunities that the Sega CD could offer. I believe they should have done more with this system. I was particulary sold on the Lunar series. I still have all of my Sega CD games. If you look at the difference between Lunar The Silver Star and Lunar the Eternal BLue, you can see where the system was powerful. Sadly by the time the games were getting good (a matter of months after Lunar II) they stopped making games and focused on the Saturn... :p WIlly Beamish is also still one of my all time favorites. I tried the PC version, but the Sega CD is the BEST

I played a SNES as early as 1994, but I didn't own one until 1998, which I still own to this day. I love new games as much as the next person, but nothing will ever have as big a place in my heart as the classics. I remember schooling people in Madden and I may just do an article on the evolution of Madden Football over the years.

I agree that SNES had more popular games and better graphics/picture quality, etc., but I still am a little partial to Sega because of the unique collection of games it had. I also never owned a SNES, so I am a little partial. I also leaned toward Sega because for the short time it was available, I had Sega Channel. That was an awesome thing to own. You could play tons of games right off your TV, and many of them I had never heard of prior. Anybody else own Sega Channel?

I remember growing up and having a Sega Genesis, it was my life.Mortal Kombat,Streets of Rage, Sonic, Golden Alx, Earthworm Jim, and the X-men game was what i played all the time and i've always loved the Sega. Though when i was small i was younger i used to love going to my cousin house because he had the SNES and i was able to play Mario, Street Fighter 2, Spider man and other games that he had that i cant remember. To me i think both of them is good but i liked my Genesis better than the SNES.

SNES was wayyyyy better...Genesis was only good for Streets of Rage, EA sports games and cheesey games like "Moonwalker" and "Alex Kidd"...SNES had Super Mario, Super Metroid, Zelda, Mario Kart, Final Fantasy, Starfox, Donkey Kong Country, some great sports games and just more colorful graphic and better sound. Oh and Street Fighter 2!!!!

I played both systems but I love the SNES more. I enjoyed playing Super Mario RPG (the last video game I had interest in), SMW, Earthbound, Yoshi's Island, Mario Kart, F-Zero, Mega Man X, Kirby Superstar and a whole bunch of others I can't think of right now. I still like the Genesis though. Can't go wrong with Sonic, Vectorman and ToeJam and Earl. Good times.

I definetly thought that The SNES was better than the Genisis. But all of my friends had a Genises, and thats the reason I wanted one too.
    So we could trade games.

Sonic is the game I alwaysed liked, Just the first one. Not II or III. But the very first Sonic game. I never had either system. I would go to my best friend's house and play Sega, out of all the Top Notch games he had I would still play Sonic.

Up until this day I have the sonic Mega Collection for the Cube, and I have played a little of Sonic II still havent got to playing III and pretty mutch playing most of just sonic 1.

Genesis all the way. Sonic, Vectorman, Earthworm Jim, and so many others. SNES had only two that got me, Super Mario World and Chrono Trigger.

Growing up, I had a NES. Good system, but also a reminder about attempts byothers to bind me from leaving home, so in a way, the ole NES had little meaning to me.

I had to join the army and go to europe to get away from all that, so in a way, that was the beginning of a liberation for myself. I never really liked buying a lot of games because my brother's friends were adamant about stealing anything they could get their hands on. So when I was finally on my own, man, the first thing I got was my own SNES....bought DRAKHAN (sucked), PILOTS WINGS (Awesome), MADDEN 91 (ruled), and SUPER CASTLEVANIA (Ruled), and FINAL FANTASY 2 (blew me out of the water how good that was).

Got a genesis shortly after, in early 92, and that Genesis would morph along with my Sega Cd and my 32X. Great memories.

Play EarthBound for the SNES, you will find the game outrageous and fun.

As for the Genesis, when I was a kid, I was always put into one of those huge Play Places like Chucky Cheeses, but it was setup at a casino so the parents could go gamble while the kid stayed at Kid's Quest, if I recall it was called.

I was a fan of Nintendo, but I remember when I was there, I would play the Genesis because of Sonic and the sound. It was an interesting system. I liked the sound better than the SNES back then, but looking at the here and now, the SNES had the better games that I liked.

    Seriously, try out EarthBound.

no my friend, Gunstar Heroes is the best genesis game ever made.
    nikki89 Posted 6 years 8 months ago
I had(well, still have) a Genesis and SNES. I had a lot more games for the Sega, but I think I played the Nintendo more, because I had Super Mario World and Super Mario All-Stars, and would spend hours on end trying to beat them. I never really tried while playing any of my Sega games(except for maybe Sonic 2 and Mickey Mouse World of Illusion) until recently. So I'm still not sure which one I like better.

I've always been the guy who said "You know what I miss? The TurboGrafx-16." And now the Wii (or the Revolution as I still call it) will have the TG-16 games available for download. I do honestly think that the TG-16 could've competed with the SNES and the Genesis if NEC marketed it better. It was the first system to feature a CD-Rom drive. I spent hours playing Y's Book I and II and Valis II on it. Man I miss that system. (Oh! There I go.)
Knites Posted 6 years 8 months ago
    Yep, Sonic Ruled.
    jgarner4 Posted 6 years 8 months ago
yes sonic did rule over mario and the cartoon (satam not advetures) was awsome. but the snes's surperiergraphics and sound made it better. i mean how can you compare turtles in time with hyperstone heist you cant.
Cutsman Posted 6 years 8 months ago
    SNES!

Although, I have an undying love for classic Sonic, my loyalties lie within the Mushroom Kingdom. Doesn't it make you happy Sega, and Nintendo work so close now?
Jake 1079 Posted 6 years 8 months ago
super nintendo all the way man.never cared mush for genesis im more of an RPG type, and decent RPG's are what the genesis lacked alot of,those graphics on phantasy star 2 look like slop(and for a 16 bit console it sure had low buget graphics),the super nintendo just had better graphic quallity and better RPG's(I dont give a crap about blood and guts or blast processing)
    sm2000 Posted 6 years 8 months ago
Hey, you mentioned Kid Chameleon! :) One of the most underrated gaames for the Genesis, imo. I played both quite a bit as well, though I only ever owned a Genesis. the thing that steered me away from Nintendo back then was they're overly strict censorship. Yes, I thought the graphics and sound were amazing on the Super NES, but I wanted my games uncensored with all the blood and guts intact! So I owned a Genesis, and would rent a Super NES overy couple of weeks.

On an unrelated note that the comments seem to be trying to shoehorn into this, I really don't get the Sony bashing. What's the big deal? All 3 major companies have new systems either out or coming soon. We've seen ONE of them in action, so there's no way to properly compare them at this point. Looking purely at the SPECS, PS3 is going to kick ass, no matter what anyone says. Wii is an interesting concept, but I really can't see what's so exciting about a controller that looks like it should be used for my VCR. Oooooh wow, you can wave it around! Guess what - you can do that with the PS3 controller too. Sony won't go bankrupt, they've got their fingers in far too many pies. My vote goes PS3, Wii, XBox 360 (used at a garage sale for 5 bucks). And with that, I've already said far more than I intended to on the subject...

So let's stop all this pointless console bashing, this is about two of the consoles that WERE, not the ones that are/soon will be.
SenTora Posted 6 years 8 months ago
And thankfully when Nintendo comes out with the Wii, you'll be able to play all of those old games of yore from the NES, SNES, N64, Genesis, and I believe the MAster System as well.

Sony's lost my vote (even though it never had) and I still might get a 360, but I'm kinda looking forward to what Nintendo is offering. Long Live Old School!!!
